Hi

PM = private message.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Hi

That looks like a false positive.

Let's find out:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\speech\wab64.dll

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Hi!

Tried uploading the particular file...in fact many times, but failed. Message obtained from Jotti

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

I can see the file though. It is 1022kb in size.

Pls help!

Ok, maybe no such info.

Try to copy (not move) that file to some other folder and try again if you can upload it to virustotal.

Hi

Yes it looks like that both are bad, we need samples:

Download suspicious file packer from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip)

Unzip it to desktop, open it & paste in the list of files below, press next & it will create an archive (zip/cab file) on desktop

c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\speech\wab64.dll
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\speech\svchost.exe

Go to spykiller (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?PHPSESSID=d65884362fbc872b70e1a9a9a7e13700&board=1.0)

Press new topic, make threads title "Files for Shaba"
Include to your message a link to here, then attach the cab/zip file to your message and post the topic
If you cant locate it through the browse button just copy/paste the filename and path.

After you have done that, please reply in this thread :)

Hi

That is just fine :)

Download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) by OldTimer to your Desktop.

Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\speech\wab64.dll
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\speech\svchost.exe

Click the Move It button.
The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created) alogn with a fresh HijackThis log.

i have moved the 2 files together with their directories into C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles and as you have mentioned a log is created inside this directory as well.

However I dont understand what you want me to do next. Do u want me to post a fresh hijackthis log and attached the above into the spykiller thread? Pls advice

Hi

Post contents of that OTMoveIt log and a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

I must inform you that ever since I moved the svchost file out of the directory together with the wab64.dll, I stop getting the threat warning from my AVG everytime I restart the computer.

Is it a good sign? Has the threat been removed completely?

Hi

"Is it a good sign? Has the threat been removed completely?"

Yes, it is.

Threat is now in OTMoveIt quarantine which will be deleted in final instructions :)

Hi

Then you're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
2) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
3) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
4) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
