I was running Avast antivirus up until around December 2nd. Avast gave me a warning that it had detected a trojan and I clicked the delete button. The next day however, the computer displayed some nasty symptoms and I started working on my computer's security. My security was weak, so I admit, it was probably my fault I got infected in the first place.

I tried doing a system restore but found that all of my restore points had been erased up until the moment of the infection. I tried a restore anyway but that didn't solve the problem. A few days ago I removed Avast and downloaded Mcaffee Security Suite as part of an offer from Comcast. I removed what I could with that virus scan. I also downloaded and ran Spybot and removed whatever I could. Then I downloaded East-Tec Eraser and permanently wiped all erased files.

None of these scans completely solved the problem. They would alleviate symptoms temporarily but most of the spyware would return by the next day, even with Mcaffee's firewall set to maximum. It got to the point where Mcaffee would not detect anything even though though the machine was clearly infected with something. I looked through Mcaffee's logs and found several registry changes and a vundo trojan. So I downloaded and ran VundoFix to see if I could get rid of it easily.

At this point most of the symptoms are gone but the computer is still somewhat slow. There are also random glitches and other small symptoms which aren't extremely threatening, but they are a nuisance. I'm sure the trojan is not completely removed and there may also be some other virus involved. I'm getting a new computer for Christmas and giving this one to my brother, so I would like to have it completely cleaned out before then. Help would be greatly appreciated :red:

Here are the results of the Kaspersky scan:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I would like to help, this looks like Vundo to me and much of the infection is usually hidden. Let's start with this:

1) You have a Vundo infection which can be hard to remove. This will take some time and unless you are patient, understand how to follow directions and are comfortable working on your computer, you may want to seek local professional help. If you wish to proceed, read and follow the directions carefully.

2) The junk will download more so stay offline except when you are troubleshooting until we get you clean.

3) I will edit out the duplicate Kaspersky log to shorten the topic.

4) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT, call it Andre615.exe that will work. After a reboot we should be able to see the junk if it is there.

5) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

Post a new HJT log and I will respond as soon as possible after that.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for returning your information, not a lot showing except the original indications of the infection? Wonder if the hackers have gotten wise to us, heck they read this stuff too. I will proceed normally for the infection to make sure we get it all. Read and follow the directions carefully.

1) TeaTimer off...please do not activate it again until we finish.

2) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

3) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

I had already run vundofix previously so no files showed up this time and it didn't produce a log.

Combofix ran fine, though. Here is the combofix log:

Also, this is the only computer I have available to me and thus I have to be online and using it. Is that alright or will that affect the cleaning process?

Thanks again.

Actually, now that I took a look into my C drive I saw that VundoFix did produce a log the first time I ran it. Here is the VundoFix log from that scan:

Also, this is the only computer I have available to me and thus I have to be online and using it. Is that alright or will that affect the cleaning process? That's fine, you have to use it to troubleshoot, I just try to avoid web suring, etc. that can reinfect a computer while it is weakest, see this:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/11/07/rogue_antispyware_ads/

1) TeaTimer still disabled.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

(files to add)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pyyepnjy.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ouuyvtrv.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hyvkflgk.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xeafrsuo.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ejmigaya.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mcrh.tmp

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove and uninstall C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ (probably MyWaySearch)

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\Andre V\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\ <<< delete the contents of that quarantine folder

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ <<< delete that folder if there.

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks...Phil

The popups have stopped which is nice, but the computer is still a bit sluggish. Every once in a while a program will take very long to start up or close unexpectedly. Also, occasionally the hardrive will process something almost non stop for several minutes even if I'm not running any programs or even using the computer. Iv'e had this computer long enough to recognize that some of its behavior is not entirely normal.

The problems I mentioned above were all occuring before I followed your most recent instructions. I'll run the computer for a while and see if any of this has stopped. Also, I noticed in the initial Kaspersky scan that a lot of files in the System Restore Folder were infected. Have we fixed this yet or is it still on the to-do list?

And finally, could you tell me a little bit more about the infection and what it does? The Mcaffee website doesn't have very much information on it and I'd like to know exactly what it does. Are there any specific actions that trigger it, so I can avoid this in the future? Is it possible for the virus to recurr even if it has been totally cleaned out?

Thank you.

I think I found what was causing the computer to be slow. Every few seconds a system process called mcmscsvc.exe will take about about 50% of the CPU then jump back down to normal. I have no idea what that process is but it sure is taking alot of processing power. Any ideas?

Found the source: it's part of Mcaffee Security. Still not sure why it's taking so much of the processor though.

I apologize, I needed to see that last Vundofix report to make sure those six items were deleted. I would be happy if you looked and told me this is so.

The HJT log looks fine, We still need to clean some infected System Restore files so I will need a new Kaspersky scan result.

First, let me comment a little on McAfee, I personally ran McAfee for around eight years, then they made me aware they were dropping VSO and if I wanted to stay onboard I would have to accept the hugh download which rivals the Symantec/Norton junk. After a few phone call (I made them give me a toll free number so we could discuss this) I took my credit card and parted company at the end of my subscription. I can report slow computers are a common theme I hear from folks who downloaded their package.

I'll post this information now, ideas might help you maximize other areas to compensate for McAfee?

I'm running the Kaspersky scan as we speak. I'm also happy to report that a spybot scan turned up clean for the first time as did the vundofix scan (I actually posted the results for this scan near the end of page 1. I put all of the logs together since vundofix puts all of the results into a single file.)

I did a little research on that system process and I agree with you. Mcaffee needs to work that issue out before I'm ready to buy one of their products (I'm actually using a free version that came with my subscription to comcast, not a paid subscription). That said, what antivirus do you recommend? Like I said before, I used Avast up until I was infected. I figured Avast wasn't the most secure antivirus and so I switched to Mcaffee which was better known.

Thanks a lot for the information you provided. It was very helpful. I'll post the results of the Kaspersky scan as soon as it is done.

I ran the Kaspersky scan and it came up clean, no infections. But I saved the log as an html file by mistake, then tried to convert it to text but it ruined the file  If I want another log I'm gonna have to run the scan again.

Thanks again! You were very helpful. One last thing though: Is it safe to do a system restore if necessary? I don't remember us cleaning out the system restore directory manually so I don't know whether it is still infected.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the question, since I believed the Kaspersky scan was clean, then there would have been no infected System Restore files. It is always safe to do it though, here is information.
