I seem to have several things going on with my PC - hoping to rid them without having to reformat and reinstall XP. I'm running Symantec Live Update, which periodically tells me I have a virus that can't be cleaned, quarantined, or deleted. Kaspersky turned up 6 viruses - SpyBot in safe mode fixed 3 specific items. My logs are below:

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

1) You are infected

2) You seem to have read the directions and yet you have posted an out of date HJT log? Update to version 2.0.2 from the link in the instructions and use that version when I request HJT logs.

3) Probably a Vundo infection which can be hard to remove. This will take some time and unless you are patient, understand how to follow directions and are comfortable working on your computer, you may want to seek local professional help. If you wish to proceed, read and follow the directions carefully.

4) The junk can morph and download more, stay offline except when trobleshooting until you are clean.

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

6) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for your help! Sorry about the outdated JT log - I have updated to the version as recommended in the post.

I downloaded and ran VundoFix, but it said it found no infected files. What should I do now?

You should follow the directions I posted. Once you complete them post the information I requested. I need to see the report from Vundofix (Vundofix.txt) even if it found nothing.

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

1) I installed the newest Java version, but I can't find any old ones to uninstall.

2) PC is definitely running better than when we first started this. For one thing, it actually goes to the appropriate page when I click on results in google - it had been redirecting to random shopping or search sites.

3) I used to get an error message at start up that it couldn't find some dll file - a whole bunch of mixed up letters that started with an 'a'... similar to the file names you had me delete. That message doesn't come up anymore.

4) No more balloons in the task bar about how suspicious behaviour (yes, behavior with a 'u' - that's what tipped me off in the first place, since Microsoft generally doesn't use the British spelling of things) has been detected. The Ultimate Defender crap seems to be gone.

How do I look now? What next?

(some old files may not delete, just delete all you can)

Remove combofix, C:\qoobox\quarantine\, Vundofix and the C:\VundoFix Backups from your computer, then ren Kaspersky using these settings.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Your next scan will be clean if you followed those directions.
