View Full Version : AVSystemCare with registry access/task manager disabled
Hi, first of i wish everyone a Merry Xmas & Happy New Year.
On to the problem, i have got a mates laptop which he's managed to get badly infected. Here are the actions i've currently taken:-
1) Fully updated Windows XP (now SP2 fully updated)
2) Installed and done a full AVG scan (fully upto date) and all Virus/Trojans fixed.
3) Full S&D scan and all fixable infections fixed. Others which it fixes come straight back as soon as i reboot, even into safe mode. These are the ones it can't fix:-
MicroBillingSystem
Microsoft.Windows.AppFirewallBypass
Microsoft.Windows.System
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCentre.RegistryTools
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCentre.TaskManager
Win32.DNSChanger
These seem to all relate to the alterations made to the deny access to the taskmanager & registry as well as the redirects of the browser.
4) I have found the AVSystem hidden folder in the C:/ directory but even booting into DOS it won't allow me to delete this folder.
I hope i haven't jumped any steps, i'm only trying to provide information.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you
will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make
sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish. The fix will
begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer;
please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is
normal.
At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of
the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
OK i ran that. It just seems that the AVSystemCare has shifted from being early on in the boot sequence to being the last thing in the boot sequence that gets auto-run.
Also the registry and task manager are still locked. By the way i am logged in as administrator.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log & a fresh hjt log.
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.

Yes i did do the HiJackThis system scan and then checked the boxes and did the fix.
But those redirects to gomyhit came back.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest
definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise
Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been
infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post. Include also a fresh hjt log and a description of any remaining problems.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.
If having a problme doing the above
Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.
To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:
* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.
* Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings.

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

That's it, the system is running fine. I can now hand my mate his laptop back.
I'd already fully updated windows and turned on auto-updates.
His AV & firewall i have fully updated, configured and turned auto-updates on.
I've installed Spybot S&D & AdAware and i'll tell him to update and run weekly.
The only problem left is a missing dll but that's to do with his printer drivers and he can reinstall them.
