View Full Version : Help...Please review...
Hi!
First timer here...
Please review my log and let me know if something is off. For some reason gmail keeps opening up every time I click an e-mail link even though Outlook is my desginated e-mail app. I recently downloaded My Websearch and have a feeling that might have caused this issue but not entirely sure.
My log file from HijackThis is below...

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
The Waiting Room
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=37
I apologize for the wait, you must have missed the directions pinned to the top of this forum. If you still have problems, please read them and post a new HJT log, the required Kaspersky scan and any comments you think will help. If you have resolved the problem, post to let me know so I can close your topic.
Thanks...Phil
Thanks for the e-mail.
I'll be honest. I'm a bit confused. What directions am I missing? What is my title?
Help!

Because your log was posted on 12/25, and malware can can change quickly, and over a week has past since you posted the log, I requested a new one.
Provide:
a) The HJT log. One HJT log only, until a helper responds.
b) The Kaspersky log report. <<< also need the requested Kaspersky scan results.
Thanks
I did a scan with HJT but how do I get a log to generate?
I also did a scan with the Kaspersky software but not sure how to get a log from that app either.
This is all so new to me and it kind of sucks not knowing how to do what.
Please help!

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 <<< there
These instructions are posted plainly in the instructions pinned to the top of the forum and posted above. You need to take the time to read the directions.
Thanks
Thank you for your patience.
Here is the information as requested.

I understand you are new at this and I am taking that into consideration. I posted these instructions:
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
in my post number 2, you need to take the time to read and follow those directions.
Please do not attach or link to infected files!
If a helper requests files they will give you a link to upload them.
All logs should be copy/pasted into topic and not attached unless requested by helper in that format.
When adding posts to your topic, do so by clicking ADD REPLY
I am quoting only this one, but please read them all so you understand what is expected of you. I really don't believe you have much of an issue, but for me to find out I have to go through this process.
Thanks
I'm sorry. I saw the upload option and just thought it would be easier to view. I should have just pasted. I need to send this in two e-mails since both logs exceed the 20000.
Here ya go!

Thanks for posting your information, I want to say first that all items in the Kaspersky scan are infected System Restore files that we will clean soon.
see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< update Java and then uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 4:59:27 PM, on 1/5/2008
You have what looks to be a trojan running from your NT services, let see if we can cleanup like this.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your proection back on when you finish.
4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Security Center and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(if you use those two HP redirects, you can leave them)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ario&pf=laptop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ario&pf=laptop
R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O23 - Service: Security Center (wscsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe (file missing)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
This is important, so I may over explain, this is a bad file:
C:\WINDOWS\C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe <<< in red. Look at that pathway:
C:\WINDOWS\ >>> C:\WINDOWS\ the file we need to delete in red has to be in the second C:\Windows\ folder.
This one must not be deleted: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe <<< this is needed for your computer to run.
Be very careful here!
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart, post a new HJT log and let me know you were sucessful. Then we will clean the System Restore files.
Thanks
Please see my notes below. I have some additional questions. I'm using all caps so my notes stand out. I'm not screaming. :)

I DID NOT SEE RO OR 023 AS LISTED ABOVE.
I DON'T KNOW IF I WAS LOOKING AT THE CORRECT SPOT FOR THESE FILES. IS THE LOCATION CORRECT? I GOT CONFUSED. WHAT IS THE PATH FOR THE SECOND FILE? SORRY. I GOT CONFUSED.
I DID FIND THE FILE THAT I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO DELETE AND LEFT THAT ALONE.
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
WAITING TO DO THIS.
Restart, post a new HJT log and let me know you were sucessful. Then we will clean the System Restore files.
Thanks

Java: Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Remove any Java version except the one you just download.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log.
Please do not copy all of my instructions, we can scroll back to see what I said as can you. I am interested in any instruction you could not complete.
Thanks
I have the following Java on my system.
JAVA DB 10.2.2.0
I also now have JAVA 6 Update 3 and JAVA SE Development Kit 6 Update 3.
Should I just remove the 1st of the three?
Here's the latest log.

Thanks for returning your information, wait on Java, I will take a look at what you have installed soon.
Your HJT log looks clean of malware:bigthumb: Let's clean the System Restore files now. Follow the instructions carefully.
MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Now create a uninstall list and post it for me like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
Post that uninstall list and then while you wait, run a new Kaspersky scan. If you followed the posted directions, it will be clean. DO NOT post a clean scan, just let me know.
Thanks...Phil

Thanks for your uninstall list. I am looking for malware and security issues. It is a good chance for you to look for stuff you no longer use.
Java DB 10.2.2.0 <<< I have no idea what this is, are you running Linux also? See the Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Java+DB+10.2.2.0&btnG=Google+Search
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 <<< uninstall this one
Viewpoint Media Player <<< option but suggested, read about this one.
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

To be truthful, I do not know many of your programs, but nothing else looks bad.
How is your computer running now?
Thanks
Not sure what Linux is so I doubt I have it/use it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I took the time and removed some other programs I just don't use.
The Kaspersky scanner is still running.
Should I now go back and reverse #1 and 3?
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your proection back on when you finish.
I never ran the ATF Cleaner. Should I? Or is it mute at this point?
Random. Is it possible for someone to hack in my system? I was using some other type of Kaspersky software when an alert popped up noting that someone with an IP was trying to hack or something in to my system. Got me thinking.

I'll try to answer your questions.
1) I keep mind unhidden all of the time, if you have children you may want to hide them but I find the children know more about the computers than we do anymore.
2) ATF-Cleaner is an excellant, free, small tool for cleaning.
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/
I use it anytime I clean, your call.
3) Yes, turn on Windows Defender, as soon as that Kaspersky scan is finished (should be clean) update WD and run a system scan.
4) Anytime you are online you can be hacked, that is what your firewall is for. If you run the Windows SP2 firewall, you should consider a stronger firewall. Here are free ones:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/jpfirewall.htm
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
(run only one firewall at a time)
Thanks
Phil,
I have done everything you suggested and my system is clean and running well. I have even installed a firewall.
Thank you so very much for all of your patience, time and help. I sincerely appreciated it.
Have a great 2008!

Phil,
Thank you again for all of your help.
I have two quick questions...
1) In one of the links you enclosed I read that I should not use two Firewalls at the same time. Is Windows Defender and COMODO Firewall Pro both such applications?
2) Is there a site or forum that could help with general windows questions?
Please let me know when you have a second.
Thanks again!
:)

Good morning:) Windows Defender is not a firewall. Make sure you have the Windows firewall turned off in the Security Center since you run Comodo. Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Firewall >>> OFF
I will share http://www.google.com/ with you, it will answer most questions. For instance when I Google "general windows questions" I get 5,800,000 responses with the most used ones at the beginning. Two good forums, and there are many are:

Hope this helps
Phil
