I've had this problem for some considerable time and have uninstalled S S&D and reinstalled various times.

My scans always freeze at 6690 and I have to use the task manager to close the program down. I'm currently relying on Ad-aware for spyware removal, which I don't think is ideal.

I have used Webroot Spysweeper recently (on trial) which picked up the usual stuff, and I have also scanned with CWShredder but they haven't solved my problem with Spybot.

Here is my Hijack This log and I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Hi cloudbusting,

Have you tried scanning with Spybot S&D in safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406) ?

Your log is clean, so I expect that you will find that works.

Let us know and we'll take it from there.

Also, can you let me know which elements of PC-cillin 2002 and eTrust Vet Antivirus you are actively using?

cloudbusting
2006-02-07, 02:18
Thanks for responding Metallica.

I don't use Penicillin at all so I should actually get rid of it. I suppose it was loaded on the system we bought the computer. We only use Vet and have done for a few years now and it's fully up-to-date.

I'll try S&D in safe mode and report back.

Spybot S&D works perfectly (and very quick) in Safe Mode. Thankyou! :bigthumb:

Does this mean I'll have to do this from now on and is there any particular reason why it won't work in normal mode for me?

Metallica
2006-02-07, 09:56
The reason could be the leftovers from PC-cillin.
Let's try that first.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpySweeper] "C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe" /startintray

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe

O23 - Service: Trend NT Realtime Service (Tmntsrv) - Trend Micro Inc. - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2002\Tmntsrv.exe

Then reboot and try scanning in normal mode with Spybot.

Let us know.

cloudbusting
2006-02-07, 11:45
O.K, I've fixed checked items on HT, rebooted, then completed S&D scan in normal mode and it freezes at 6689 CoolWWWSearch.

I actually did a normal mode scan this morning, (after the successful safe mode scan) which stopped at the same point. Previously it was 6690.

Metallica
2006-02-07, 12:10
Hmmm. I was hoping this would not be necessary.

Do you know how to disable the resident scanner of Vet?

If so, please do that and try scanning again.
It usually is another scanner interfering with Spybot and we have ruled out SpySweeper and PC-cillin, so there is only one left.

Metallica
2006-02-07, 12:18
Oh. And please do not forget to turn the resident scanner back on when you are done.

cloudbusting
2006-02-07, 12:54
I turned Vet to 'snooze' and perfomed scan, but unfortunately I still have the same problem.

I did another Hijack This scan to find one of the entries you told me to remove is still there.

O23 - Service: Trend NT Realtime Service (Tmntsrv) - Trend Micro Inc. - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2002\Tmntsrv.exe

Everytime I check & 'Fix' it, it comes back.

Should I uninstall PC-ciilin completely? We don't actually use it so I can't see the harm.

Metallica
2006-02-07, 12:59
Ah yes. I misunderstood.
I thought it was a leftover after you uninstalled PC-cillin.

So uninstall PC-cillin and try while Vet is "snoozing"

I think you are also using the Trend Firewall. You will need to replace that or enable the windows firewall for the time being: Here's how. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283673)

Hi Pieter.

My Windows Firewall was already turned on. I've now uninstalled PC-cillin (and rebooted) Performed another S&D scan while Vet was on 'snooze'

No change I'm afraid. Spybot still freezes at 6689 and I still have to use task manager to shut it down.

I have to head off to bed now, but I'll have another look in the morning.

Thanks for your help today.:)

I noticed SpySweeper was still running.
Can you try with that turned off as well?

You get some rest. I'll ask someone from support to have a look at this thread.

Sorry I wasn't around yesterday.

O.K I've unistalled Webroot Spysweeper, rebooted and performed S&D scan.

I'm still at the same point 6689.

Metallica & cloudbusting: I'd like to try something that sounds a bit radical, but I'm aware of one case that this has worked.

Please make a copy of the entire Spybot - Search & Destroy folder somewhere else, such as on the desktop or even on a flash drive or writeable CD if you have one. The folder is typically less then 25MB, including all sub-folders.

Do not move the folder, leave the original where it is, make certain it's a copy. Using Windows Explorer to right-click and drag the folder from C:\Program Files\ to the new location and drop it, then selecting 'Copy Here' is the easiest method.

Once the entire set of Spybot folders have copied, browse to that new folder, find SpybotSD.exe and double-click it to run the new copy of Spybot. Try a scan as you normally would and tell us what happens.

Please don't destroy the original Spybot - Search and Destroy folder if this works, since we may want you to get us some information about it. Again, I know it sounds strange, but this entire problem is both rare and strange, so it's worth a try based on what I've heard.

Thanks for taking time to try it and give us feedback.

Well isn't that astonishing? I have uninstalled & downloaded Spybot so many times in the past, to no avail. I really quite speechless.

I can't quite believe that it actually worked and that it is sooooo much faster!

Now would you mind explaining to me why an exact copy would work as opposed to the original? lol

:bighug: to you Bitman and Metallica for taking the time to help me. You're fabulous!

(I've kept the original, let me know what you would like me to do with it.)

Thanks for trying it, but I can't take full credit myself, I saw that someone elsewhere had tried this after trying a new copy on a Flash Drive and both worked.

I've been trying to figure out why it might work myself and still haven't got a really good reason, though there are several possibilities, one of them is still some malware we haven't found yet though I don't think that's highly likely.

Could you tell us exactly where (path) and how you made the copy?

Metallica, LonnyRJones and I will have some discussions offline to determine what we need to learn from you next. Please stay with us to help find the real cause and again thanks.

I copied it via explorer, as per your instructions, then sent it to Desktop and ran it from there.

Come to think of it, Spybot was unusually slow when I first upgraded to 1.4, (previous versions were ok) before it eventually just froze up completely.

I used Opera for about 3 years but got rid of it awhile ago because I began to receive too many pop-ups. Some of them were those dangerous Windows style pop-ups that would open to a website, even though I closed via the red x. A couple of times the download dialogue box would appear when I hadn't clicked on anything to download. I told a friend about it, who thought I was crazy as he'd never ever had any issues with Opera.

Whenever this happened I would immediately perform Spybot, AdAware and a virus check and fix any results. When Spybot stopped working, I used Trend Micro's online scanner, then later Webroot Spysweeper(trial) which removed the usual suspects, dialers etc.

Anyway, I have never had this problem with Firefox, nor do I have it with IE, which I rarely use anyway. I suspected malware but I would have thought that my other browsers would be affected also.

I just thought I'd give you some more background in case it sheds more light on things.

Thanks again.
