I've done the "before you post a log" steps. The Spybot - Search and destroy running in safe mode could not remove all the red items even though I tried it 4 times. There were different numbers of threats. Sometimes 26 sometimes 27. Anyway, here's the 2 logs you want. Please help me get my sanity back.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

This one is nasty: C:\WINDOWS\system32\lpcywinp.exe read about it:
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/1998464849074817919-0/LPCYWINP.EXE.html

Do you know what this is: C:\WINDOWS\troy44.exe If not we will remove it.

You have a mess in both Kaspersky and the HJT log. Looks like TeaTimer is blocking removal of a lot of junk. Let's see what we can do like this.

Kaspersky first:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete everything in that Recovery folder.
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

C:\Documents and Settings\John\Desktop\Trojan\ <<< delete that folder and the contents

C:\Program Files\Eset\infected\ <<< delete the contents of that folder

E:\SmitfraudFix.exe <<< delete that folder

1) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your proection back on when you finish.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

In some cases it's sometimes quite usefull to reset TeaTimer, once you've had it disabled to remove HijackThis entries:
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Thanks for the quick help. Feedback: couldn't delete the lpcywinp.exe file on the step you listed. I did all the steps, started over from the start and then I could delete it. Seems the file was "in use" or locked. It's now gone. During he second run through, many of the 02 - BHO (no name) items were back. Not all but most. Finally, step 2: the ResetTeaTimer.bat. link just downloaded a "log" type file that looked like a word or notepad document. Your instructions were to download it and then "double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries.....". There was nothing to double click. To sum it up, I did all the steps listed except for double clicking the ResetTeaTimer.bat. Couple things, the yellow warning icon with resulting pop up hasn't come back. The hijacked home screen is still there with the red warning. And just for the hell of it, I hit control-alt-delete and I'm still not authorized to use that. Here's the resulting new HJT log:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Let me say first that your HJT log appears to be clean of malware. We will run Kaspersky as HJT can not see everything but a few questions.

The hijacked home screen is still there with the red warning. And just for the hell of it, I hit control-alt-delete and I'm still not authorized to use that.
Tell me more about the "hijacked home screen". I show either MSN or RR should be your Start Page. Please tell me where you are being redirected, might give me a clue.

When you use control-alt-delete what exactly happens, please post any error message "word for word". What happens when you right click the Taskbar and choose "Task Manager"?

Post a new Kaspersky scan ussing these settings:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here along with any infomation I requested.

Thanks

Again, thanks for being so quick. When I said "the hijacked home screen", I mean my desktop. My desktop image has gone away. The screen background is black but all my icons are there and there's also a message in underlined red type: "Warning spyware threat has been detected on your PC." Below that in white type is: "Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity." Below that is: "Your IP address is (it shows 7 numbers - if you need this I'd rather PM you with it) and via this address an unauthorized access was gained by another computer. It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities."
When I hit control-alt-delete a message box pop ups. It shows Task Manager in the blue header and the message says: Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator. There is an "OK" button. I don't think it's a spyware pop up. If I hit OK, I'm back to where I was. When I right click on the taskbar, the "task manager" option is grayed out. When I followed the steps to run the new Kaspersky scan, there was no active X install prompt, but it is working. The new scan shows 2 Trojans. Here's the new log:

Thanks for the feedback, you may need to do a repair of the Operating System or even a reinstall, but we will work on it more first. You have a couple of nasty items:

Manually delete these, make sure you have viewing all files and folder enabled:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\0.903866.exe <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\winshow.exe <<< delete that file

Empty the Recycle Bin on your Desktop, restart the computer and let me know if that improves things.

Finish that first, then try these ideas to retsore your Desktop and Task Manager.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/desktop.htm

Look here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
scroll down to Task Manager

Try this:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Select Restore Defaults

Keep me posted

Thanks...Phil

I removed the 2 items. To remedy the desktop, I followed your advice but instead of using the default, I selected a new one which appeared. I rebooted and the one I selected appeared. I went back in to see if I could select the black one with the message but it wasn't there. I think I'm OK with the desktop. Thanks for all your help. I'm still unable to get to the task manager but have seen your suggestions, all of which look quite daunting. But with the other stuff apparently fixed, I can work on that at my leisure. I'm nervous to tweak the registry but will give it a shot after I catch up on all the stuff I had to let go while ridding my PC of the virus. Thanks again and I'll post again if I fix the task manager issue. I guess I could google "how to restore task manager" and go from there. Before I sign off, is there anything else I should do?

Thanks for the feedback, that will help others who have the same issues. Malware often makes changes to keep you away from tools like Task Manager and the tweaks at the links I provided are used all of the time. Save those links, they are two of the very best comprehensive troubleshooting websites.

Phil, I'll save those links. You might appreciate the following...Mozilla Firefox froze up so I closed out of it. I went to relaunch it and a pop up said I could not log on because I was already on. This has happened in the past and all's I need to do is stop that process in the task manager. Well...I hit control-alt-delete by reflex and it was there!!!! I have no idea how I got it restored because I didn't do anything. The only thing I did after I sent you my final feedback was to run both Ad Aware and Spy Bot which found some stuff I removed. Anyway, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You and your team provide an amazing service and I hope I never have to see you again:laugh: (I'll bet you hear that all the time)

Are you sure Firefox is up to date? Every once in a while I will have an issues with Firefox (I use IE7 99% of the time) and when I do I uninstall it and install it again, that usually fixes the problem.
