Hi, I have picked up one or more of these. Loads of popups and taking over things. One called ism I deleted but likely didn't get it all. My NAV detected it but didn't block it. Ran Spybot and Adaware which didn't get it. Ran in safe mode too. All restore points prior to this have vanished.
Any help greatly appreciated. I don't have an install disc, as I bought the computer with XP pro already installed.
I also ran the Kaspersky scanner.
Thanks.

Hi
1. Download this file -
combofix.exe (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your
next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause
it to stall
Hi,
I'm getting a popup saying "ComboFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application"
Hi
Try to download the ComboFix.exe file again. If it still doesn't work try this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) one.
Hi,
I'm getting a popup saying "ComboFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application"
Hi,
I got ComboFix to run from a link in another thread. Had to abort once as popups kept interrupting. As of now it's been running for 3+ hours. I'd read somewhere here that is shouldn't take more than 20 minutes, and am wondering if this is a problem?
Whatever viruses I have did cause problems with all my other scans - NAV, MS malicious, Spybot, and AdAware. I'm on a library machine now.
Thank you.
Hi
Yes, Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.[/color]
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end. It would also be wise to disable NAV during ComboFix run.
OK, thanks, I'll try it with NAV disabled if I can. I haven't been able to get NAV to even open, other than in safe mode. I keep getting a popup asking for a disc to run it. I don't have one as I purchased the program online, and the popup is suspect anyway, as the ones I've been getting look just like legitimate Windows ones.
There were no strange processes running during the first scan that I aborted, as I had task manager open, it being the only way to kill many of these popups.
On the second scan that's been running 3+ hours now, I haven't had task manager open, as Combofix said to close all open windows, and no popups have come.
Hi,
I am unable to open NAV, either in the toolbar, programs, or the system tray, where the icon has disappeared. It does open in safe mode. Also, everything on my desktop has been intermittently disappearing.
None of the processes you listed above are present.
Ok. Have you tried running ComboFix in safe mode? Please do if you haven't.
Hi,
I just tried that. Ran for an hour+ with no reboot. I think I managed to turn off NAV Live Update in the control panel, which is the only NAV thing I can seem access, and will try ComboFix again, normal and safe modes. I've also thought about trying to just uninstall NAV and would like your thoughts on this first please. As far as I can tell, it's not running anyway.
Upon restarting, I'm getting loads of real or pseudo Windows Installer popups coming faster than I can close them with the Task Manager, running CPU usage up to 100%. They're telling me to install HPP and something Norton/Symanted related.
Also, System Restore shows as turned off, which I didn't do.
Thanks.
Hi
If it still doesn't work then run combofix.exe with following steps
1. Ensure that combofix.exe is on your desktop.
2. Make sure you save and close ALL open windows and programs that you are running in the taskbar as combofix will attempt to end all non-windows processes for a faster and more successful cleaning.
Click start > run > copy and paste:
"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall
Hi, I got it to run before seeing your last post, though NAV interfered some with the log file I think, attempting to block it and not responding to my attempts to allow it.

Hi,
I'll do my best with the above. I'm not much of a techie as is probably evident. ;)
The Norton and Symantec are part of my AV program. As I indicated somewhere above, I'm not able to access it other than in safe mode since I got this virus, and the icon is gone from the system tray, even though 'always show' is checked in settings-taskbar. It DOES appear to be working in some capacity though, as it keeps attempting to block ComboFix from creating the logfile, but is not much responding to my directions to allow it without countless attempts.
It also keeps trying to install with windows installer, saying it can't find a file and asking for a CD, continually popping back up no matter how many times I kill it.
Nero burning program appears to be working. Not sure about all the peripherals as I've never used them. IN CD is one of these.
I'm not sure about Sun Java. I do have some kind of Java program, but the Sun part doesn't seem familiar from the update boxes I get regularly.
The HP is part of the resource hog junk that comes bundled in with my HP Photosmart C6180. This is another thing having the same windows installer behavior I described above with the NAV. I uninstalled software update when this began to try and get rid of the related popups as I've never used it, and only need a working printer/copier/scanner without all the related junk they bundle in.
I hope that made some sort of sense.

Hi
I'm afraid you need to reinstall all those programs to make them work again. Hopefully you have needed CDs/DVDs available. You can remove Java since it's old version anyway. I'll give you instructions to get the latest one when we've finished this case. :)
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.
Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it
Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
After that let's check what Kaspersky online scanner finds. Post the report when finished. If it's too big to fit you can upload the report to http://rapidshare.com.
Hi, I'm getting a 'the site was not found error' when trying to download the ATF file above.
As far as reinstalling the programs, I have the HP and Nero CDs. For NAV the CD I have is from 2006 I believe, and I renewed the latest subscription online, so all I have is a key# that was generated.
Thanks.
I believe you should be able to get latest trial version of Norton online and then use the key you have to register it.
For me ATF link works. Try again and if it still doesn't open up skip right to Kaspersky scanning. :)
Hi, got the ATF to work, but it was during the scan.

Good. You can run ATF now since it won't produce any log. :)
Navigate into C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder and delete all files/folders in it. Delete also c:\qoobox & c:\combofix folders (if found) and combofix.exe on your desktop.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Remember do that Norton reinstallation to make it work again. These days it's quite risky to have system without antivirus & firewall.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
Navigate into C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder and delete all files/folders in it. Delete also c:\qoobox & c:\combofix folders (if found) and combofix.exe on your desktop.
Done. Left the quarantine folder but deleted the contents.
I will get right on the other stuff which looks to take a while, but just one question first: Should I uninstall/delete any remaining NAV/symantec stuff before trying to reload it? I noticed a lot were infected and I guess removed in the log files, and wonder if what's remaining will conflict with a new installation?
Thanks SO much for the help, and I'll post my results and any problems with the rest of the above when done.
Yes, it's recommended to remove old installation first :)
I'll post my results and any problems with the rest of the above when done.
Ok. I'll be waiting for your reply.
Hi,
Got everything configured reasonably smoothly. I already had Ad-Aware, but installed everything else you listed, as well as following the additional instructions. The one exception being holding off on the Hosts file, as my system is already rather slow and won't accept any more memory, so the speed warning scared me off. That said, it's now running faster than it has in a long time. :)
Only issue I had was one freeze-up while running through the BOClean options (I didn't change any of the default settings.) This may have been due to the re-installed NAV, which I later found was using up all the resources. I changed the automatic update settings to notify in it, and no problems since.
I will certainly take your UPDATE orders quite seriously in the future. Re. the firewall, I'm not sure I have one beyond the one that comes with XP, which is something I will look into.
Thank you again for all the help. If you ever happen to make it to NYC, shoot me an email; I owe you a beer or a beverage of your choice. :)
