View Full Version : JS/Downloader.Agent- Please help

AVG came across this (JS/Downloader.Agent) whilst I was browsing a website. I immediately moved it to the virus vault, but it wouldn't allow me to 'heal' it. I've just left it in there at the moment..its location was in the temporary internet files, so i swiped all of the temp files through IE. Now, I don't know if im completely safe here, or what the deal is. Will keeping it in the virus vault solve the problem, and do you think it had any potential to replicate itself or something of that sort in the given timeframe?
It is also probably valuable to note that I had someone/thing trying to intrude into my computer around the time of the virus becoming recognised but was blocked by my firewall. A few other attacks were noted after this, then it died down.

I downloaded Hijackthis and did a scan, and I also did an online Kaspersky scan.

Hijackthis results:

Does the hijackthis results suggest anything about the 'virus'?
& kaspersky came up with the SmitFraudFix? Is this because its a 'run' program?

Help much appreciated. (I edited out name/email by the way)

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

1) You have not posted a complete HJT log, there is information in the four line header we need.
Notepad > Edit > Select All. Post another log only if necessary!

2) All items in Kaspersky are related to Smitfraudfix, we post a disclaimer telling folks this when we use it.
Delete Smitfraudfix from your computer, it does not update and must be downloaded new each time because of updates.
C:\Documents and Settings\-\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\ <<< delete that folder
Once this is done, the Kaspersky should scan clean.

3) C:\Documents and Settings\-\Desktop\HJT\HiJackThis.exe <<< if you insist on running HJT from your desktop, make sure there is no one in the house that will access it. Create a folder where I have placed one in red for the logs and backups as well as the executable to store in.

4) I run AVG free antivirus 7.5 myself, though I have had no viruses to quarantine, once they are in quarantine (vault) they can no longer harm you. This information should help you get it out of the vault.

Clean the quarantine folder
You can remove the files from the AVG AS Quarantine:
-Launch AVG AS and click the Infections button.
-Click the Quarantine tab
-Choose: Select All
-Click: Remove finally
-A window pops asking "Are you sure you want to remove the selected files...??"
-Select: Yes

Let me know if that does it for you.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for the reply.

This is the info for the HJT log that was left out

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 1:05:07 AM, on 5/01/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16544)
Boot mode: Normal

I created a new folder for HJT as you suggested & I deleted the virus from the virus vault.

I also ran a new Kasperksy scan after deleting smitfraud, but it still identified it in the backup..(C:\System Volume Information\_restore{8046FF02-2125-4B43-A9EE-273E1DA93760}\RP137\A0029810.exe RarSFX: infected - 2 skipped). I'm assuming this is ok..?

I also ran another avg scan and it found nothing.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. The one item is an infected System Restore file, the information in this link will explain how to clean that one.

Optional removal >>> O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-5306.html
(your call)

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
