spybot not a fair player

no matter how i set the scan priorty it is a total hog. i can barely do anything on my computer without waiting. it's a P4 @2.6 ghz with 768 megs of memory running xp. the system may be 4 years old, but i just reinstalled xp, clean. this has been true ever since i got this machine.

is there something i am missing in the parameter settings?

i have used a number of versions with this problem. currently using 1.5.1.18
