Argh. I've done spybot, have attempted the lmfix, and still am having problems. I can't get on the internet on the infected computer (firefox and IE both have errors) but I was able to get access to it from the network, if I need to download and install anything. I'm working on getting hijack this installed over there right now.

I'm getting the elitepop thing, and I know I have the wwwsearch program. When th computer boots up, I get two error messages got VCclient (that the program could not open) and I close those out. Still can't get on the internet.

Sorry. I didn't notice this thread was reopened.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip).
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcran + Shorty remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU)

Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute copy and paste c:\bfu\EGDACCESS.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Also follow the instructions here:
http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html
to remove NewDotNet.

Then post a new HijackThis log.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
>From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Almost there summer. :bigthumb:

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssgkdg.exe reg_run

Then reboot and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\SGFubmFo <= the entire folder

That folder isn't in my windows directory!
Every time I reboot and run HJT again, the cmd.exe file is running again. Ugh.

Metallica
2006-02-22, 20:02
Hi summer,

To paraphraze a great philosopher. If it is running, it is present. :D

Make sure hidden files and folders are showing (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)
Then reboot into safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
and delete the folder C:\WINDOWS\SGFubmFo

summer
2006-02-22, 20:20
I am freaking out. I can see my hidden files. I have rebooted into safe mode. The folder is not at the path you specify. I'm looking in all the folders in WINDOWS to see if it is buries somewhere, I can't see it. I cannot use the search feature, Windows tells me it is missing a file needed to run it.

this makes no sense. HJT shows me the path, when I follow the path, the folder is not there.

summer
2006-02-22, 20:40
I did a screen print of my windows folder names.

Metallica
2006-02-22, 21:19
Very strange. Looking at the screenshot your system32 folder is missing as well. You did have them sorted by name when you made that screenshot?

This is not quite the correct following order for the fix, but it's worth a shot:

Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted.
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip
Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.

A text will open when it is finished, post it please.

summer
2006-02-22, 21:33
Yes I did have them sorted by name and I did doublecheck that the view was set to show hidden. I'm baffled. I searched every single file and folder looking for it, too. here's the log;

Another step closer.

These need to be fixed with HijackThis:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://searchbar.findthewebsiteyouneed.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.findthewebsiteyouneed.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssgkdg.exe reg_run

They are no longer running, so that shouldn't be a problem.
If you can see the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder now and delete the
C:\WINDOWS\SGFubmFo folder then you need to get Windows and IE updated to SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

It doesn't matter from which account you do that. It will repair/upgrade all of them.

Keep us posted.
