backdoor trojan pz[1].exe; confusing scenario

Hello,

I have read the "before you post" posting and have followed the instructions.

My machine:
Windows XP Pro (lots of memory, fast processor)
Symantec AntiVirus full version 9.0.3.1000
Spybot S&D 1.4
Lavasoft Adaware SE Personal Build 1.06r1

All antivirus/spyware have latest updates and definitions and are run frequently. Symantec returns no threats, spyware programs return only tracking cookie issues.

THE ISSUE that i have arose when a link was opened on a website and Symantec raised a threat dialogue that warned of the file pz[1].exe as a virus. The results were: clean and quarantine both failed, status "infected". I did some research and only found this trojan related: Backdoor.Graybird!gen.

The Symantec website recommended an easy removal via running their program in safe mode and deleting infected entries.

I ran Symanted in safe mode and found no infected entries, zero threats. I've run Spybot in both safe mode and regular operating mode and it only returns tracking cookie threats.

Lavasoft finds more issues than spybot, but none of them seem related to the virus. I ran several online scans (Trend Micro, prevx, kaspersky) and all come up clean except for Kaspersky which notes a virus and 5 infected files (see log file below). Again, Symantec, the program that detected the virus, does not find it under safe mode.

I am at a loss. The machine is definitely slower than it should be and I found this posting site through extended research in the hopes of determining what is going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

Click here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Kaspersky findings are ok (VNC client) and HjT log is clean.

forgot to mention... i tried to repair the issue by returning to the earliest recorded restore point on my machine. it would only let me restore back to 12/8/2007, even though i reimaged the harddrive 11/7/2007.

i re-ran kaspersky online scanner following this and results were the same as those supplied in my first posting (5 infected objects; 1 virus). also re-ran spybot and symantec in safe mode...nothing.
