Hi,

Zlob.DNSChanger.Rtk continually appears as a threat after Spybot scans, even having removed it each time. Google search results are relocated to a number of ad sites, on both IE and Firefox, and the proxy settings of IE are modified to not use a proxy each time I open the application.

Below is a HJT scan of my machine today. Having seen what you have been able to do for those with a similar problem recently, I would greatly appreciate your help. I have downloaded Fixwareout, SDFix and HJT, and await any instructions anyone might like to give...

Apologies, as with the majority of users I have read the procedure AFTER having done the HJT scan (RTFM, I know)...

I ran Fixewareout once after HJT, without any internet connection problems following reboot. Here is the report:

Hi there, thanks for your help.

First off, having read the instructions, the machine is my workplace computer, but I am part of the IT department (2 people) and have permission to proceed.

My problem is that Zlob.DNSChanger.Rtk continually appears as a threat after Spybot scans, having selected to fix it each time. Google search results are relocated to a number of ad sites, on both IE and Firefox, and the proxy settings of IE are modified to not use a proxy each time I open the application.

Here is my HJT report:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. The tool I would have run is Fixwareout and you have run that. This looks like the problem file:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\~\Winlogon\ "system"="kdtkz.exe"

Let's finish cleaning and see if that takes care of the issues.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\ <<< out of date, download the newest Java version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

Hi, thanks again for this help.

I followed your instructions to the letter, and on reboot the proxy server settings of IE are still disabled, and Google searches still redirect, although now only to false search engine sites and eBay (?).

One other point that may be of interest; after I ran fixewareout the other day, I followed their instructions and ran dnsbak.reg as I could not see my ISA client in the task bar (although I had no internet connection difficulties as such.)

Here is my latest HJT log:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Before we panic and start running a lot of tools, let's look at the basics.

First here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/updatehistory/page-5.html
I am showing that item was added to the Spybot S&D databases. Would you first be sure you have the newest version and that you are fully immunized.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd15/index.html

Then run Spybot in Safe Mode:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/

Thanks

I ran Spybot in Safe Mode and the result is the same.If Spybot is up to date and locating items it can not remove, please post that information here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
You should also look here to make sure it is not a false positive.
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=16

Scan saved at 08:11:32, on 11/01/2008 <<< this HJT scan was done in safe mode, I need to see the HJT logs in normal mode.

Let's do a little more looking:

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

2) Please download F-Secure Blacklight:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save to your C:\ drive.
Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).

The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and the log from Blacklight.

Thanks

mvjordan

Thanks for returning your information, just so we are clear on this before we proceed, these are instructions from "Before you Post".

Note: When the infected computer in question is a company machine in the workplace, and you are an employee.
Your organization must give their permission for assistance to be received in the removal of malware. The intention of this forum is not to replace a company's IT department.
More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.
Please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.
Thank you for your understanding.

We have both a corrupted hosts file:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
Fichier hosts corrompu !

and a hidden rootkit found by Blacklight. Please proceed like this.

1) Tutorial if you wish: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial124.html

Now use Blacklight in exactly the same way as before, but when it shows the list of the items found, select this entry: 01/11/08 17:53:25 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\kdtkz.exe
choose to let Blacklite rename them by clicking the Rename button.
Next to each entry, "rename" should appear.
Click "Next".
Blacklight will give you a warning if you are sure. Click "Yes".
Then it will tell you: "Your computer will reboot now"
Click "Yes".

2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean: Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional: To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

The hosts file will be very large, please edit it out of the C:\rapport.txt before you post it. Edit out all items starting with 127.0.0.1.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Add any comments you think will help.

Thanks

I think you may have done it PSKelley!!:D: Google results are no longer redirected anywhere. My proxy settings are still unchecked by default when I reboot, but this is not necessarily abnormal... to be investigated.

Here are the Backlight and Smitfraud logs. One observation; Smitfraud displayed an error while, I think, trying to delete Local Settings\Temp\. I think its because I entered Safe Mode with the "administrateur" account. C:\Documents and Settings\mjordan\Local Settings\Temp still contains all its files. Should I delete these manually?

Any follow-up tips/precautions ?

In the blacklight scan at the end of your post, this item:

01/14/08 16:06:15 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\kdtkz.exe
is not showing that it has been renamed? Would you review the tutorial again:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial124.html

In order to tag a particular file or process that you would like to clean, you need to left-click once on an entry with your mouse so that it is highlighted, and then press the Rename button. When you do this, the action will change from None to Rename. Once you set a file to Rename, you can untag it by pressing the None button so that no action is performed on this particular item.
After you have selected all of the files you would like to rename, you should press the Next button. A warning screen will now show stating that renaming legitimate files can cause Windows not to operate properly. If you would still like to continue renaming the files, put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled I have understood the warning and wish to continue and then press the OK button. You should then press the Restart Now, and then the OK button again, to restart your computer and rename the select files.

You will be renaming only that one file, then post a new Blacklight scan along with a new HJT log.
Thanks

Yes, strange that. And I did as it suggested in the tutorial.

I did find another Blacklight logfile created 15mins before the one I sent in the last post, which ended like this:

01/14/08 15:46:41 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.67 initialized
01/14/08 15:46:41 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2)

01/14/08 15:46:42 [Note]: 7005 0
01/14/08 15:46:48 [Note]: 7007 0

But on re-scanning this morning, no hidden files were found. This is the result:

01/15/08 08:25:58 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.67 initialized

Thanks for the feedback and checking to make sure that malware file is gone, that is how the Blacklight log should look:bigthumb:

I believe that is a leftover in the registry but let's see that the Spybot experts have to say. I am linked to that topic and will keep this one open until the issue is resolved. I suggest you edit your post and include a link to this topic for them.

Your call

As far as I can see the rest of the HJT log looks clean of malware. Check Java, they just updated to
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4
I am not sure how wide spread the realease is yet.

Let's have Kaspersky take a look for anything we missed.

Remove all programs we used, you may keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner <<< check link

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

I removed ALCMTR.EXE and checked the Java updates, 6 version 3 seems to be the latest for the moment...

But Kaspersky says I'm not all clear yet...

I also just found the Backlight-renamed file C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdtkz.exe.ren and sent it to the FP group as requested. Should I just delete this manually??

The registry entry to kdtkz.exe is also still there, as you suspected...

Good morning and thanks for returning your information.

I also just found the Backlight-renamed file C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdtkz.exe.ren and sent it to the FP group as requested. Thanks much, and yes...we will delete that file even tough it is harmless.

1) Delete the file in red: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdtkz.exe.ren

2) Empty the Recycle Bin and restart the computer. Clean the System Restore item using the instructions in this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

If you followed those directions, the next Kaspersky scan will be clean.

PSKelley, you rock! :bigthumb:

All's well according to Kaspersky. SpybotSD still shows up the same entry, but I'm hoping that's a false positive or the reg entry (which still exists by the way, would you advise deleting the key manually?)

I am having problems with explorer however, it hangs for ~30 secs every time I want to use it. Could this be an after effect of any fixes, or malware infection? I read somewhere that some of these malware inject themselves into the explorer.exe process. ??

Thanks for the feedback, could not have done it without you:bigthumb: I would wait until you see what that say at the Spybot forum, Spybot should remove that entry. If it does not, you sure can if you are comforable working in the registry. Be sure to BACKUP THE REGISTRY before doing so.

Sorry, didn't explain correctly, its WINDOWS EXPLORER (explorer.exe) that hangs, not IE...

thanks again.
