Hi,

I have a problem with an infection that causes links in Google, etc, to be redirected to other URLs sometimes. Sometimes I get the URL requested, sometimes a genuine search engine (eg. Ask) showing similar search results, and sometimes a bogus search page showing similar search results.

I have tried Bullguard, Ad-aware, SuperAntiSpyWare and SpybotSD, none have removed the behaviour. SpybotSD is the only one to have found a likely culprit (Zlob.DNSChanger), but it can't remove it.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

I have done the "BEFORE you POST" actions, and I have included part of the SpybotSD report, Kaspersky and HijackThis reports below.

OS is Win2000 V5.0 SP4.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Please read the directions carefully, you have not posted the correct Kaspersky scan, the directions plainly say to scan: Click OK. Under "select a target to scan", select My Computer.

You have scanned only: Scan Target - Folders: C:\ E:\

Do not run and post the correct scan until I request it. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

I need information about this item: C:\Program Files\intY\cmgrwin32.exe
Do you know what it is? If not, use one or more of these free online scans, scan the file in red, and post the results for me to view.

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Post the report from Fixwareout, the results of the file scan, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Thanks for your help.

I have read & understand the "Before you Post".

I started to run the Kaspersky scan on My Computer, but it started scanning all the mapped drives on my laptop, so as there appears to be no option to avoid this, I set it to scan the 2 hard drives.

The item C:\Program Files\intY\cmgrwin32.exe is part of the firewall/network system logged onto when I connect to the network at work. I trust this & have not scanned it.

I have followed the instructions and the logs requested are given below.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Sounds good, just a little more work to make sure the junk is gone.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you may leave the first item if you set it that way on purpose)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

You can run a Kaspersky, but the last one was clean. The Ukrainian hackers hide the infection as a rootkit, so likely that is why Kaspersky does not see it.

I have done all the actions suggested, and have attached a new HJT log below. I didn't run a Kaspersky.

The original problem has not re-occurred, so hopefully that means it has been eliminated.

For my info, do you know what actions this infection takes? Is it only the redirecting of the search links, or does it have other effects that I'm not aware of?

Thanks for the feedback, to my knowledge, this infection is only about re-direction to websites they want you to see but we can never be 100% sure, the only way that can happen is with a reformat.
