Hi

Navigate into C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder and rename HijackThis.exe file -> MelanCrews.exe. Post a fresh hjt log after renaming is done. :)

Do you recognize programs behind file paths above? You have to reinstall (uninstall thru add/remove programs first if any of them exist there) these programs to make them work again since infection infected some of their files.

In addition to those you have to reinstall (first uninstall):
-Google desktop search
-Google toolbar notifier
-Kaspersky internet security 7.0 and
-Spybot - Search & Destroy

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as
CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log & a fresh hjt log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Thanks so much for your time.

Also, I re-did an online Kaspersky scan. It reported 7 viruses and 44 infected files. I was able to run Spybot but it did not install correctly. It stopped installing at 99%...Not sure what that means.

Hi :)

I removed those other posts of Kaspersky report. Please upload Kaspersky log to http://rapidshare.com.

Let's remove Spybot and then install it again. You meantioned that had some problems with reinstalling Kaspersky Internet Security. What kind of problems?

Remove thru add/remove programs:
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

03 - Toolbar: (no name) - {37B85A29-692B-4205-9CAD-2626E4993404} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {DFB852A3-47F8-48C4-A200-58CAB36FD2A2} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Spybot - Search & Destroy Configuration - {DFB852A3-47F8-48C4-A200-58CAB36FD2A2} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll

Close all browser windows and click 'fix checked'.

Delete following folder if found:
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy

Post a fresh hjt log.

Kaspersky will not install because every time I begin to install the program a message pops up that says that the program has encountered an error and the computer must restart before installation. I restarted the computer and tried again and I had the same error message. The link to my file is as follows...

Hi

he link to my file is as follows...

Clear recycler bin (do this with all user accounts) & delete c:\QooBox folder. Those other bad findings are in system restore. We'll clean it after system is working well again.

Now the only remaining problem seems to be with Kaspersky installation, am I right? There may be some parts of Kaspersky old installation left and that could cause those errors. Let's see if Deckard's system scanner could help with this.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Hi

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Delete following folders (Does c:\KAV contain your install packet? If yes, don't delete it then):
C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab
C:\KAV
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kaspersky Lab
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Kaspersky Lab
C:\Program Files\DriveCleaner Freeware
C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Freeware

Start hjt. Open the misc tools section -> Open uninstall manager..

There highlight DriveCleaner Freeware 1.0.111.0 and click 'Delete this entry' (click 'yes' if asked). Close hjt.

Open regedit (start-run- type in regedit and click OK) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

There, you should find a key similar to "avp_post_uninstall". Delete it and try to install Kaspersky again.

Great! :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)
Spybot can be downloaded at this location (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

I have not done all of that yet because I did a full computer scan with Kaspersky and it detected 34 threats. One was detected when I did a rootkit scan. The rootkit scan found "virusHeur.Invader(modification)" and the full computer scan detected 33 Virtumonde afflicted files in the system restore (under system volume information). I did neutralize the files but last time that I went throught the detection and neutralization process I eventually lost access to Kaspersky and Spybot. Should I proceed with the directions you gave in the previous post?

Blade81
2008-01-20, 18:23
Those in system restore will be cleaned when system restore is reseted. Reseting is included into my instructions in previous post. :)

Do you have more detailed description of rootkit scanner founding (maybe it's log or something)?

The rootkit scan came up clean after following your directions. Thank you! Then, as I was following the other directions for the system restore, Kaspersky informed me that Invader popped back up. So, I terminated the process and now I do not have access to IExplorer. This took place after re hiding system files and between removing used tools.

Navigate into c:\program files\internet explorer folder. Does it contain Iexplore.exe file? If not you may need to reinstall Internet Explorer...

I navigated to the IExplorer folder and was able to access Iexplorer through the folder. So, I deleted all other shortcuts and created a new shortcut. :) Thanks.
