Hi

I am having problems with annoying pop-ups when using IE. Nothing is showing up on any of the programs that I use but when I ran Kaspersky it flagged up 3 viruses.

Here are the logs requested.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You have a nasty infection, read about it here:
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=C2.Lop&threatid=8144

This junk is usually self installed with other stuff like:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/43.html
Are you following the advice the helpers post for you and trying to keep yourself clean? It seems you are posting more than I do?

Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...

http://www.spywareedge.net/nolop/NoLop.exe
http://www.spywaretimes.com/Tools/Download/Anti-malwareTools/NoLop!/
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=get16

First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks

--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program. --

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I do not recommend Messenger Plus! because I consider their business practices suspect in that a user has to read the eula and opt out of LOP/C2Media.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\ <<< Java needs an update:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [close surf mail dupe] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Tick Find Close Surf\download sign.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [intra bone] C:\DOCUME~1\Carole\APPLIC~1\AXISDE~1\Modetransidle.exe
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://games.ntlworld.com/online/onl...ploader_v5.cab
ADW_POP.A

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Tick Find Close Surf\ <<< delete that folder

C:\DOCUMENTS abd SETTINGS~1\Carole\APPLICATION DATA~1\AXISDE~1\ <<< delete that folder

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log, let me know about any malware issues.

Let's have a look at another Kaspersky scan. Please turn word wrap off in notepad so the scan is single spaced and use these settings.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Sorry, but I am not the wisest of people when it comes to technical stuff. I'm trying to update Java but which files do I want to download:

jre-6u4-windows-x64.exe
jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe
jre-6u4-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe

or all of them?

Try this: Start > Control Panel > Java Console (little coffee cup) > click Updates tab > Update Now in the lower right corner. Follow any prompts.

Thanks - do I still need to remove the old one before I click install or does this just update what is already there

pskelley

I have not seen your uninstall list, but I have found it is better to download the new version first. Then go to Add Remove and uninstall all old versions.

I already have ATF Cleaner installed which I used regularly. Is this version OK or is there a newer version that I should be using?

These may seem silly questions but I don't want to get anything wrong and make matters worse

pskelley
2008-01-12, 15:37
The only silly questions is one that is not asked.

Atribune has created only one ATF-Cleaner for Windows XP, you may use your version. Recently he updated it for other Operating Systems: http://www.atribune.org/content/view/40/2/
My personal copy does not have a version number that I can see.

In HJT I don't see this line:

ADW_POP.A

Is it OK to just delete the other lines

pskelley
2008-01-12, 16:06
Yes, I put that: ADW_POP.A there so you would know what this DPF is.

I can't find the following folder:

C:\DOCUMENTS abd SETTINGS~1\Carole\APPLICATION DATA~1\AXISDE~1\

I have found this though:
C:\Documents and Settings\Carole\Application Data

with a folder named axisdeadbody

Is this the right one or something totally different

pskelley

axisdeadbody <<< that looks like the correct folder to delete.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

Both HJT and Kaspersky are reporting the LOP/C2Media item is still running on your computer:

HJT: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [intra bone] C:\DOCUME~1\Carole\APPLIC~1\AXISDE~1\Modetransidle.exe

Kaspersky:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kayleigh\Local Settings\Temp\sta1.exe <<< delete the contents of that Temp folder

C:\Documents and Settings\Martin\Application Data\axisdeadbody\Modetransidle.exe <<< delete the folder in red and it's contents

You also have four infected System Restore files to clean, but I usually wait until everything else is done so it only has to be done once:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

Until you delete those files above, you will not be clean of malware.
Boot to Safe Mode to delete the junk if necessary:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/

Home page was changed to msn.com this morning but I don't appear to have the CiD pop-ups.
Look at the four items in the HJT log that start with R1/R0. As you can see you have MSN set in Internet Explorer
to be your Default, Search and Start Page. If you wish another Start Page, use HJT to remove those four lines and this information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/ie7_basics.mspx

Thanks

HJT: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [intra bone] C:\DOCUME~1\Carole\APPLIC~1\AXISDE~1\Modetransidle.exe

For the above line - do I need to re-run HJT, check line and fix checked as before

I did do this before and deleted the axisdeadbody folder in C:\Documents and Settings\Carole\Application Data but I see that it is back again.

I don't know how I can make those instructions any plainer.

Have deleted those folders again, this time in safe mode. Restarted and looks like they've gone.

Have always had google as homepage not msn.com. Have deleted those four lines in HJT and changed homepage back again. That seems to have worked.

New HJT log follows:

Thanks for the feedback, does anyone else use the computer? It only takes one wrong click when something like MSN asks to make itself your homepage to make that change.

Have deleted those folders again
Let's hope you only deleted one folder, the Temp folder was not to be deleted?

Java just updated to: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4

Your HJT log look fine, if you have not already done so, clean your System Restore files using information in the like I provided.

Re the above: I hope so too - I didn't read it right ( can I have done much damage?)

The only one who has used this computer is me. My daughter now has her own laptop and, once I have transferred her homework folders from this to hers she is banned from this one, but she has not been on this since I started the cleanup.

Can I also ask that as her laptop is running with Vista Home Premium what you suggest for ensuring that she is protected against bugs. She currently has ZoneAlarm, AVG and Spybot S&D. Are there any others that I should put on there?

Read the links from the experts I posted, the same information will pretty much apply to Vista also. I have yet to see the operating system hands on.

C:\Documents and Settings\Kayleigh\Local Settings\Temp\ <<< return to there, if that Temp folder is gone, right click and choose "New Folder", name it Temp
Make sure it is located inside the Local Settings folder.

Thanks

The Temp folder is there - the only thing that has been deleted is the 'sta1.exe'. - Is that how it should be?

That is fine:bigthumb: If you read the directions I posted again, you will see I said to delete the "contents" of the Temp folder. That would have deleted the bad file plus any other junk stored in that folder.

OK I will delete the entire contents of the temp folder but not the actual folder - have I read that right before I go and do it.

Once again, many thanks for your help.
