I'll see if I can help, but first information for you.

1) Your friend has a nasty infection, I wish to say unless you have the computer in hand, it would be better to allow him to do his own posting. Remote repairs are hard enough without trying to do three ways.

2) Read the directions, you have not posted a Kaspersky scan which was required. Do not post it now until I request it.

3) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is a real problem and it will get them major infections:

Update to the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

Assuming you wish to clean the malware, this is how we will start:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Thanks for returning your information, we may be dealing with a hidden infection here, let's take a look.

1) Please download F-Secure Blacklight:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save to your C:\ drive.
Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.


2) TeaTimer still disabled.

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the log from Blacklight, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

at one point i had uninstalled NIS and installed ZA and AVG in place of it. also ran adaware and spybotsd. as i dig it seems that they had once had verizon security installed also. there seem to remnants of it still running. it currently had Norton 360 loaded and it doesnt seem to be functioning correctly.

The HJT log looks clean of malware I see the Verizon Internet Security Suite Firewall and Symantec, no AVG or ZA? Let me look at a uninstall list.

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

It's not unusual for malware to mess up an antivirus program, but the infection we removed usually just re-directs via the IP. I don't use Symantec so can't help you there, but I would get with tech support to see what they advise.

As soon as you post the uninstall list, let's have Kaspersky check for any hidden malware.
You may also remove Fixwareout if you have not done so.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

got rid of the Verizon's remnants. was still slow for a 2.85ghz machine with a gig of ram.... did some investigating........found that the primary ide channel was running at PIO instead of DMA... uninstalled that and reinstalled.............runs great..........scanned with Kasper...nothing found...
