View Full Version : Intermittently super slow machine after virtumonde.generic found

Hi, I would appreciate any help with a frustrating problem. Several days ago after downloading freeware from a few places, my normally quick laptop used for multimedia projects (2 GHz Intel processor, 2 GB RAM) became cripplingly slow, with the Windows Task Manager showing the CPU almost constantly maxed out at (or near) 100%, even though no unusual programs appeared to be running. The problem is not constant, but it keeps recurring multiple times a day and can last for hours if I don't reboot, and even just trying to shut down and reboot can take 10 minutes or more.

Spybot 1.5 found Virtumonde.generic and SpyBouncer and removed both. I have rerun Spybot several times (including once in safe mode), and it no longer finds any threats. Kaspersky's online scan also did not identify any malware. But the problem continues and is truly maddening, because I can't complete even simple projects or even just use the browser for long without the computer eventually grinding to a virtual halt in the middle of whatever I'm doing. I can only assume that some remnant of malware remains.

HJT log is below. I was over the character limit when I tried to post the Kaspersky log in this same message, so I'll hold off on that unless someone asks me to post it separately. Please help, if you can. Many thanks in advance!!

Jalad

P.S. - I posted about this problem on 1/8/2008 soon after it started in a techspot.com forum ("Security and the Web"), but I hadn't successfully run the Kaspersky or HJT scans yet and I never got a single response in that forum. So I'm trying again from scratch here, having recalled that folks here were extremely helpful once before when I had a malware issue several months ago. Thanks again.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

Please post the Kaspersky log :bigthumb:

You have
Comodo
AT&T Internet Security Suite
Trend Micro Internet Security 12]
That probably means 2 Antivirus and 3 Firewalls
First you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running more than one Anti Virus program.
When you do this the programs compete for resources, and the end result is none does it's best and can cause system instability.
I recommend that you choose one that you want to keep.
The other/s I would either uninstall, or disable from startup and use as "on demand" for an occasional scan.

You need ONE antivirus and ONE firewall.

decide which you want to remove and see how things are working then.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Thanks very much. I got the "one antivirus, one firewall" advice last time I was here several months ago, and I did comply. From within the applications, I had disabled antivirus on everything but Trend Micro, and I had disabled firewall on everything but Comodo, so there should have been only one of each running. But now I have fully uninstalled the AT&T suite and have double-checked the settings on Trend and Comodo to make sure there is only one antivirus and one firewall running. Is that okay? I wanted to keep the Comodo as the firewall, but the Comodo program does not have antivirus, so I still need another program for that.

Here is the first part of the main txt from DSS (it wouldn't all fit in one post):

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitComet 0.93
BitTyrant

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs (http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=26216&sid=81e62eb6fe99a5bad157cee792b31b7f) where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=23812&sid=a609c56441d8a2e5dc8d24e3e96420cc).

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

There is no malware visible in your logs, please try disabling the following items with Winpatrol

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowLOMControl]
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\FastLane2\IPMon32.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\FastLane2\IPClient.exe" -l
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelZeroConfig] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ModemOnHold] C:\Program Files\NetWaiting\netWaiting.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FreeRAM XP] "C:\Program Files\YourWare Solutions\FreeRAM XP Pro\FreeRAM XP Pro.exe" -win
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe

Are you on Dial-Up or Broadband/DSL ?

Jalad

Thanks. I uninstalled BitTyrant and BitComet.

I am using DSL.

I disabled all the items you listed in WinPatrol, except I could not find this one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowLOMControl]

Hm, if not malware, then maybe a software/hardware glitch? Should I just wait and see if the problem keeps happening, with these programs now disabled?

Thanks again.

katana

[b]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowLOMControl] is part of your motherboard configuration, it is nothing to worry about.

Give it a couple of days, and let me know if there is any change.
Obviously, if you have problems you can post straight away ;)

Okay, thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.

Also, when I rebooted after disabling those programs, I got a WinPatrol notice as the desktop came back up saying a change was being made to add something to startup:

RunDLL32.exe c:\windows\system32\NvCpl.dll, NvStartup

I allowed it because it was holding up the reboot, but was this one of the things I just disabled? Should I have said no?

Thanks.

katana
2008-01-15, 02:48
It is one of those items that puts itself back ;)

It is only needed really if you overclock your graphics card.

Did you disable the items, or remove them ?

Jalad
2008-01-15, 02:55
I don't overclock anything (wouldn't even know how).

I only disabled the items. Are there ones I should have removed?

Thanks.

I wouldn't either :bigthumb:

No, it is best just to disable them... I was just checking :)

Just letting you know that the problem has not recurred in the last couple days, though actually I've been too busy to spend much time at the computer to be sure. But it's promising that I haven't noticed any slowdowns for a couple days.

I did run AdAware a day ago just to get in the habit of periodic scans in addition to Spybot, and it identified a couple things that it quarantined, but I don't know if that had anything to do with anything.

So I guess you might consider this case closed? Should I just start a new thread if the problem resurfaces?

Thanks for all your help!

Adaware will pickup cookies and recently used documents, so that is probably nothing to worry about

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let’s see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up :D

Delete any logs we have produced and empty your recycle bin

Reset System Restore.
Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it,

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

http://www.nanoscan.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

AntiSpyware
AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
All of the programs in this list have a free version,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/) <<< A must have program It includes host protection and registry protection A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
a-squared Free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (http://www.ewido.net/en/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
Ad-Aware 2007 Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com) An excellent startup manager and then some !! Notifies you if programs are added to startup Allows delayed startup A must have addition
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
SpywareGuard 2.2 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware. Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
ZonedOut (http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/) Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
MVPS HOSTS (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip) This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) by WinHelp2002. Not required if you are using other host file protections

Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
FireFox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
Opera (http://www.opera.com/) Another popular alternative
Netscape (http://browser.netscape.com/addons) Another popular alternative Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.

Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords

Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/) Free and very simple to use
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=4959)

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Happy surfing K'
