View Full Version : Help! Can not get rid of WINTEMS.EXE!

Hi all, my first posting here, so I'll do my best to fill you in on the details of my problem.

I have acquired a Trojan that goes by the name wintems.exe that (from what I've read) plants itself in the System32 folder and spawns several different files to assist it in blocking out virtually all anti-virus, spyware, adware and security features in Windows XP.

So far the trojan has killed Norton 360, CCleaner, Spybot S&D, Spyware Doctor, AVG Anti-virus (won't let me install), AVG Anti-spyware (won't let me install).

I have run Trend Micro HouseCall 6.6 several times and it keeps finding the infected files, and deleting them, however they do not stay deleted. I can not kill the Wintems.exe process in the task manager. I can not reboot into safe mode (computer reboots into normal mode). Windows is taking a long time to load, which on my machine shouldnt be happening. I have also run system restore, which did not solve the problem. I have also killed the entry in the Windows Startup using the Startup Manager feature in Registry Repair.

I have downloaded, installed and ran Uniblue SpyEraser (which detected and deleted the infected files, yet they respawned upon reboot), I have installed and ran Uniblue Registry Booster 2, which detected and cleaned the infected registry entries.

I can not find the wintems.exe root anywhere on my hard-drive including hidden folders and files. I reached my limit of knowledge and patience with trying to fix this and I need to resolve the issue ASAP as I have several papers that I need to get back to work on for my degree program. I would really appreciate assistance in fixing this problem (hopefully without having to do a destructive restore/reformat of my hd).

Here is the log file from HJT:

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I've run Trend Micro Housecall 6.6 once more since posting above, now it doesn't detect anything, but the wintems.exe is still on my PC and still appears in the task manager processes.

I have attempted to install Trend Micro Anti-Spyware 3.11 and Trend Micro PC-Cillin, both of which failed to install (presumably by the wintems.exe trojan).

I have also run Gmer and located the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\srosa.sys which I have read on several sites is related to the Wintems trojan. I still can not locate the Wintems.exe file anywhere on the hard drive. It appeared briefly in Gmer but vanished. I was also able to kill the wintems.exe process via Gmer.

Hi

Generate an Uninstall List

* Open HijackThis
* Click on Open Misc Tools Section
* Click on Open Uninstall Manager
* Click on Save list
* Save it to your Desktop
* Post it on your next reply.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\hldrrr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmmute.ini
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Desktop\PC Security\KASPERSKY AntiVirus7.0.1.321FINAL(with keys pack-key checker)\KASPERSKY AntiVirus7.0.1.321FINAL(with keys pack-key checker).zip

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\down

Save this as
CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log & a fresh hjt log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Thanks for the next steps Blade. It'll be a few hours before I'm back at my PC, but I'll get on them as soon as I get in.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

Hi

Good. Some of Kaspersky findings are false alarms. Bad findings will be cleaned by following instructions below. :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1)
Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)
Spybot can be downloaded at this location (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#scanners) to choose one if you don't reinstall norton 360

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#firewalls) to choose one if you don't reinstall norton 360/it doesn't include firewall.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

I also reinstalled Spybot lastnight and its working fine. Still having issues reinstalling Norton 360 though, and upon logging into Windows the Install Manager tries running an install for Sonic (don't know what thats all about). I've also reinstalled CCleaner and its working fine.

Hi

Did you do reset to system restore and use OTMoveIt to clean up the tools we used as instructed in my previous post? Those steps should take care of Qoobox folder and infected parts in system restore.

What kind of issues are you having with Norton 360 re-installation?

I have yet to get to use OTMoveit and the cleanup tools or perform the system restore point.

I do not have my norton 360 install disc here, so I downloaded the trialware version and put in my activation code and it tells me that there is a problem with activation and to uninstall Norton 360 (using the Norton Removal Tool) and to reinstall. I've tried now 3 times, all resulting in the same end.

Okay. Let's try to clean all Norton 360 leftovers.

First remove all Norton related items thru add/remove programs in control panel.

Then start hjt. Do a system scan, check following entries (if found):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1E8A6170-7264-4D0F-BEAE-D42A53123C75} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\coShared\Browser\1.7\NppBho.dll

Close browser windows before clicking 'fix checked'.

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop. (If you are still unsure on how to do this there is a little tutorial with pictures here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Bat_File))
@echo off
sc stop ccEvtMgr
sc delete ccEvtMgr
sc stop ccSetMgr
sc delete ccSetMgr
sc stop CLTNetCnService
sc delete CLTNetCnService
sc stop comHost
sc delete comHost
sc stop LiveUpdate
sc delete LiveUpdate

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it.

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Finally delete following folders (if found):
C:\Program Files\Norton 360
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Program Files\Symantec

Post a fresh hjt log.

Hey Blade,

I cant delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

I get the following error message
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/4136/errorsl7.png

I went into the symantec folder to try to manually delete the Quarantine and SrtETmp folders and I get similar error messages:
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/4136/errorsl7.png

http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/1390/error2mw1.png

System performance issues:

Booting into safe mode results in a black screen that says "Safe Mode" in the corners of the screen, however Windows Explorer fails to load, and I'm left at a black screen.

When logging into Windows normally, I still get Windows Installer trying to run Sonic Update Manager which fails since it cant access the directory (I will post screen shots when I reboot next). Also windows is REALLY slow to load up the processes and get going, which it wasn't like prior to the Trojan.

Hi

I'd like to see a fresh hjt log after doing that entry fixing part in my previous post.

Post those screenshots related to sonic update manager if possible.

Hi

Download Windows Installer CleanUp utility here (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B290301&x=5&y=10) and install it according to the instructions there.

When installed start WIC utility and select Sonic Update Manager then click remove.

Please download combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) again to your desktop. Delete previous ComboFix.exe if it still exists.

Run new ComboFix.exe and post back its log.

Hi

Navigate into C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32 if found. Then copy basesrv.dll file to C:\Windows\system32 folder.

Install Recovery Console by following instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial117.html#install).

Did you have success with Norton reinstallation? Some other problems still?

Hey Blade,

Norton360 is being a bitch. I keep getting the error that I previously mentioned about the error during activation. I run the removal from Add/Remove programs, it gets to 100% and stalls, and when I run the Norton Removal Tool it also stalls, creates several error messages and kills the operating system forcing a reboot.

Now I believe I've narrowed the Norton360 issues down to the Quarantine folder and SrtETmp folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\SrtETmp

I cannot delete them and i cannot open either and because they're still on the system, Norton360 wont install properly.

I'll get to those other steps you posted in about an hour.

The basesrv.dll is showing up as basesrv.dll.vir and is listed as a VIR file type.

Hi

Install Recovery Console by following instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial117.html#install).

I can not install Recovery Console as I do not have the Windows installation disc as talked about at the link you provided. My Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 came stock on my PC. I never received the installation disc from the manufacturer.

Hi

Following set of instructions is for installing recovery console when cd is not available.

First I want to say that you need to wait for my reply after doing following part since it will result to a log which I have to see before you're allowed to boot system. It's almost midnight here in Finland. So, I won't be able to reply until after 12hrs. If you think this is too long time we can do this step tomorrow. :)

First delete old ComboFix.exe files on your desktop.

When old versions are deleted download the latest copy of ComboFix.exe => http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe to your desktop.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/KB310994.gif

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/rc1.gif

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

Hey,

I did what you said in your post above, however, no log is generated and i keep getting the message that the recovery console is already installed

Blade81
2008-01-18, 21:40
Hey

Earlier version of CF had bug which caused message "WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!" though recovery console was actually installed and vice versa. Since you got message that console is already installed I believe that was the CF version with the bug. So, no need to try that one anymore. :)

Guess that leaves Norton problem only existing one.

* Download OTMoveIt.exe from here and place it on your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe

* Open OTMoveIt.exe.
In the left pane where it says:
Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved
, copy and paste next part:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

Then click the MoveIt button below.
In case you get a
Bad Image
error, just click OK at the promt. It will move the file anyway.
When done, it will create a log (********_******.log -- * stands for date and time) in next folder: C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles.
Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Hi

Did you reboot the system? Did the files get deleted?

BurntOfferings

No they did not get deleted.

I was curious about the .vir file extension that I discovered a few posts back, and after some further investigation of my own, discovered that its possibly a virus infected file.

Hi

You mean those files in Kaspersky log? Is I told those are in c:\qoobox folder which is ComboFix quarantine folder. You can delete it.

I recommend to post Pc Pitstopforums (http://forums.pcpitstop.com) and ask there for help reinstalling Norton since they have persons with experience of it. We're mainly concentrating on malware removing here.

Below you'll find some tips for the future.

Click ok

The basesrv.dll is showing up as basesrv.dll.vir and is listed as a VIR file type.

No, I meant this one ^^

No, it's not bad one. Please check once again does C:\Windows\system32 folder contain basesrv.dll file.

If it doesn't navigate into C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32 folder and rename basesrv.dll.vir -> basesrv.dll. Then copy that renamed file to C:\Windows\system32 folder.

Lol, the folder C:\QooBox is gone! Probably got wiped out when I ran the OTMoveIt CleanUp. How did we create C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32?
