Hi Team -

I need some help.

My home laptop used by the family is running Windows 2000 and IE 6. Some time around Christmas I picked up something nasty that screwed the machine up.

I bought StopZilla and cleared out a lot of malware. Some problems remained but mostly things worked so I referred the outstanding issues to StopZilla support. Over the course of a few weeks I had to uninstall and reinstall StopZilla a number of times as it either (i) slowed the machine to a halt; or (ii) simply could not be started.

Impatient with the slow response from StopZilla support, I ran Panda's free scan last night which found a lot of dodgy cookies on my both my user and that of my wife. I zapped them but the main symptoms still persisted.

I then found SpyBot, downloaded it and did a full system scan. What little it turned up was old and was quickly fixed. There was one warning about a registry change which I denied. It was 1am at this point, I was tired and went to bed.

This morning I restarted the box again only to find that my Speedtouch modem was having a great deal of difficulty getting a connection. So I'm now writing this from work.

What are the symptoms I'm experiencing? Well:

i. I cannot access any M$ website, eg, to get updates
ii. I cannot access Norton AV updates - or Symantec websites (or some other AV vendors' sites either I think)
iii. When I run a diagnostic on my modem, it tells me there is a problem connecting with the internet (even when I can browse happily). The limited error report I get suggests there is a proxy in the way - but I don't use one.

Problems i and ii started over Christmas; problem iii I think is quite long-standing.

How should I start to fix this? Obviously, I cannot run HijackThis or the Kapersky scan because I can't connect to the 'net. Should I remove Spybot first?

Please can I have some help? I've spent a lot of time trying to fix this and am getting nowhere.

So I downloaded HJT at work, took it home and ran on my machine.

Aside from the symptoms above, I cannot get my Speedtouch 330 modem to work - despite endless re-installs. This may not be a malware problem, I guess, but the modem problem only started after I downloaded and ran Spybot on Monday night
