View Full Version : Virtumonde and all their little friends
We have a workstation connected to a network that has Norton anitvirus Corp ver. that is corrupted. Any help here would be great. We started off with over 166 infected files,I tried different Restore points hoping to find a clean restore point but that was useless. I ran Adware then started with Sypbot ver 1.41 have ran it more times than I care to remember. Have ran Smitfraud tool and tried to use the online virus scanner from Panda but the pop ups killed that thought. I was able to download Kaspersky SOS ver. and installed. AT the moment the virus scanner shows no viruses and I am down to Virtumonde.dll, virtumonde.generic, virtumonde and maybe astakiller. I shut down System restore when it looked like most of the trojans and such were located there and the main system looked clean.(Sorry looks like I have done everything ya'll recommend not to do) But that was before I found you. The people at work call me the "I.T. Guy" only because if something does not work or is broken I am "it". There are 5 corrupted files on the system per Kaspersky but dont know the names of them. So there you have it hope you can be of some help.

Hi
Are both Kaspersky and Symantec AntiVirus up-to-date?
1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)
Post:
- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report
Kaspersky is up to date but Norton as noted in post #1 is toast, it will not run and the update button is muted out and it states that Live Update is disable by administrator.
Here is the combo file:

Hi
You can try to uninstall and re-install Norton.
And also please re-enable system restore now if it's not already enabled.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rvmskdha.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wmrolten.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\eufbiust.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dejqpvpf.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rrtaaobs.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wnesbqxx.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jafsdwkt.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ekawyybe.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uvrkkjck.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xklxwqoa.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vbufttai.ini
Save this as "CFScript"
Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) Free for Home Users Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here (http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html).)
Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked): Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining. Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again. Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply. Click Close to exit the program.

Hi
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only!
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Hi
Empty these folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\
Empty Recycle Bin.
Still problems?
Hello
everything seemed ok so i went into sypbot and enabled the tea timer and it started asking me about all these registry entries. I started to allow them because they seemed ok they were with google and microsoft then I denied a couple because they had no info just letters and numbers I rebooted and got a list of pop ups showing the allowed ones and then I got a system error:
Error loading c:\windows\system32\pjgjmkug.dll
The specified module could not be found
I sure hope i did not mess up all your hard work
Hi
Yes it looks like that teatimer has a "memory"; those are orphaned registry entries with came back after re-enabling teatimer, nothing dangerous.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot.
Enable TeaTimer.
Reboot.
If those entries still come back, uninstall Spybot, fix those entries and then re-install Spybot.
That should do the trick :)
When you say fix these entries what do you mean
Hi
Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark those entries.
Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
I had to uninstalled sypbot, fixed those entries in highjackthis and rebooted and noticed that the clock in the task bar had lost the am. pm. instead of showing 1:37pm it shows 13:37 and of course when you hover over the time it does not show Thursday January 24 2008 but shows 2008 01-24 any thoughts on a fix, seems we or "I" have deleted a reg entry that controls that. other than that no errors pops up on the screen
Never mind the last post I did some poking under the hood and corrected the day date problem.
Going to put sybot back on and Norton will not uninstall seems it needs a password to complete the process and I fully understand that is beyond the scope of what you do. I will get with the owner and figure it out.
If you say we are clean that is great and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help. It is a GREAT thing you and your people do here. It is a thankless job until all hell breaks lose on somebody's computer.
Can you recomend any programs that will help to keep the system clean of this kind of mess. The man that uses that computer is a bit hard headed and does not alert me until it is a complete mess.
The last thing I would like to know is where can I learn to do what you do here. I have been looking at you and Blade81 posts and he has a link to a site that will teach this. Is that where one should start or are there other sites? and what kind of background do you need in order to complete one of those courses? The reason I ask is there are never enough soldiers to fight the war that goes on the internet :) also it has to do with a pay it forward kind of philosophy if I am able.
Kindness breeds kindness
BEST OF LUCK
TO YOU!
Hi
Nice to hear :)
Please post back a fresh HijackThis log after spybot installation in order to make sure that they are gone.
"Can you recomend any programs that will help to keep the system clean of this kind of mess"
Yes, I will give instructions in my all clean a bit later :)

Yes, that is one school and I am a teacher there, too.
There are also other schools, too.
Other computer knowledge is good to have and willingness to learn, of course ;)

Hi
That looks good :)
Still problems?
Have not seen any pop-ups. ran subot last night had a few cookies and a virtumonde file but it said it deleted it then I ran kaspersky showed 6 trojans (winagent32) but they looked like they were in a restore folder so I cut off system restore rebooted enabled system restore and a box came up from kaspersky saying treaths detected so i clicked disinfect from the box. All that just seems strange, usally when I am chasing trojans or viruses I know ahead of time and I disable system restore run the program then cut it back on but it takes over 2 hours to run this program. On "my" workstation Norton only takes 78 mins and I have many more programs on my machine and I scan all the mapped drives, it just seems strange to me but I already said that didnt I. Sorry for the slow reply we have been extra busy this am.
Hi
Please then post kaspersky report that we can see what those findings are :)
I compressed the file but it is 3.13mb in size how do you want me to handle it
Hi
Please upload it to eg. rapidshare (http://www.rapidshare.com) and post back link here :)
here is the linkhttp://rapidshare.com/files/86836259/KASPER.zip.html
Hi
Logs look good.
All viruses are in system restore and inactive.
I give you later instructions how to empty it.
Other than that, any problems left?
Everything seems ok. Looks like I am need to contact Norton to unistall it keeps asking for a password to unistall other than that all is great.
Hi
So you want to keep Kaspersky and remove Norton?
kaspersky is a trail. Have the Norton disk and is what we are using, it is the Corporate Edition and looks like we have installed on each workstation instead of having it installed on the server and having it populate out from there. The short ans, yes. I have tried the add remove and the process starts out fine then a box pops up asking for a unistall password. I have tried the repair option and it does its thing but does not repair the program.
Hi
Thanks for info.
Then I just give you final instructions:
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
4) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.
Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnerable for infections.
Please download the newest version here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_servefile.html?option=full&order=1&type=&language=English&platform=WinXPSP2&esdcanbeused=0&esdcanhandle=0&hasjavascript=1&dlm=nos
Install it, then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any older versions that may remain.
Next we remove all used tools.
Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTMoveIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
