Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, If you still need help consider the fact that many tools we use do not work as well or at all on your Operating System, but I will do my best. What I need from you is to read and follow the directions I posted above and are also pinned to the top of this forum.

Post the correct HJT log and the required Kaspersky Online scan results. (you may have to turn your resident off just to get the scan) When I have a HJT log from version 2.0.2 and a Kaspersky online scan results, I will respond with directions as soon as possible after that.

Thanks

Hey,

First thanks for taking my request, I know you guys are busy.
I have a few initial problems. I can't get the online scanner to work because anything I bring up in Explorer won't show text or objects. This includes "My Computer" and internet Explorer itself. Right now I am using Firefox. The HTJ 2.02 version won't open up on the computer. It says exe. has generated an error. However HTJ 2.00 will open and i ahve KAV on my computer and it will scan. If there is a way to save that file as a text let me know. Here is the hjt report.

I need the correct version of HJT, try using these instructions.

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks

I tried and a pop up box says "Hijackthis.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

Is there any other recourse?

thejones

I think the virus is shutting it down. If I keep double clicking on it, it will open but then the error box comes up and the program ends

thejones
2008-01-22, 21:15
As soon as I hit save log file the program closes

There are a few options, but this is a key tool. Try going to the executable in the Trend folder...C:\Program Files\ and rename the executable, call it thejones.exe then restart and try again to post a HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks, let's see what happens when you try to run Fixwareout.

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Thanks

I don't know if I noted that Smitfraud C coreservice came up in the Spybot scan.I don't see where you mentioned it, that is another tough one to remove. Let's give HJT a go and see what happens.

1) Click Start.
Open Computer.
Press the ALT key.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

See this information:

http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Notes for Windows Vista users:
On Windows Vista that "Windows Temp" is disabled, to empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator"
Prefetch has been disabled on Windows Vista. As I'm not sure the effects that emptying prefetch on Windows Vista will have for the time being it I won't enable that function.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\winnt\system32\ldcore.dll <<< delete that file

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

My KAV proactive defense says that "process is trying to gain modify access to Microsoft Internet Explorer plug in settings (ea54ae87...) running process winnt\Explorer.exe"

The interesting thing is that when I do nothing (neither allow or deny) there are no pop ups at all. When I deny a lot of pop ups to various sites and seems to get more aggressive.

thanks for the help so far

You have infections showing that were not in the last HJT log, the junk can download more so keep the computer offline except when you are troubleshooting until we get it clean.

Let's see if we can get combofix to run on the computer, read and follow the directions carefully.

tutorial if it helps:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log. I will not respond again until AM EST.

Thanks

I ran combofix, it cleaned out a lot of stuff but on the reboot it shut down and did not produce a log. Here is the HJT log. I am also getting "mobsync.dll is not a valid windows image. Check against installation disk.

Thanks for posting the HJT log and the feedback, sure would like to have seen that combofix log. Makes me want to avoid these older operating systems.

The HJT log looks fine, let talk about this:

I am also getting "mobsync.dll is not a valid windows image.
I get nothing where I Google that error, are you sure you are posting it verbatim...word for word?

See this: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-3617.html
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256139
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Synchronization Manager] mobsync.exe /logon
Are you using this Synchronization Manager on purpose? If not, turn it off in MSConfig.
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

use HJT to remove the line from your log.

Let's see if Kaspersky Online Scanner will give us a check, you may have to turn off your AV to get it downloaded?

Remove combofix and C:\qoobox\quarantine\ before you scan.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner <<< check link

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

When I open Internet Explorer only the background shows. The text and objects don't load. My home site is msn.com...only the blue background shows up. So when i go to the KAV site only the whit background show and no text or buttons.

The message I was getting "mobsync.dll" has gone away after running Combo fix.

The combo fix txt. file size is 85k do you want me to load it in pieces. On the forum. It won't load through the manager.

thanks

I have the zip and I will load a fresh HJT. I figured out that the virus activated my active desktop and that was the embedded object in my wallpaper. I have turned it off. I think it is manipulating setting in my explorer so I will look at those. Do I need to re-run any processes because the active desktop was on when i was running combofix...ect?

thanks

These files are all the same size and were created on the same date, and do not idenify with Google. I want you to use one or more of these free online scanners to scan the files. If they scan bad, delete them.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
I believe they are bad, but we must be sure.

C:\WINNT\system32\knjcbuek.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\mfipmhfs.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\sfjeqmjm.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\adfqnokk.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\felbadol.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\hgmjekfg.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\msnyrmyd.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\pobuaejt.exe

Make sure you empty the recycle Bin and restart the computer once that is done.

Have you been able to resolve the issue with Internet Explorer?

I need a report on how the computer is running.

Thanks

It seems like they are all clean. The computer is much better now. No more pop ups. Explorer is still the same. No text or objects just background. It says that it is downloading them but the never appear. It just says "done" at the end. I sure it is a setting but I can't figure out which one would control that.
