I am a retired person and not a sophisticated computer user. I tried to search the forums, FAQ, and Knoweldge Base but did not come up with anything. If this has already been answered, please direct me accordingly. Thank you.
CPU: Pentium Pro 200 MHz
RAM: 190 MB (+2MB RAMdisk)
OS: Windows 98 (plus all critical updates until MS dropped support for Win98)
Firewall: Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5
Antivirus: Grisoft AVG Free
(I am on a limited income and am fortunate even to have an old and creaky computer at all.)
Yesterday I downloaded Spybot - S&D 1.5. I verified the MD5 hash. The installation seemed to go OK, and I used the defaults.
When I rebooted, TeaTimer came up in memory, but the system response was unmercifully and unacceptably sluggish. It took an unacceptable time just to open Windows Explorer. Task manager (Win98 Ctl-Alt-Del once) showed TeaTimer and Spybotsd in memory. I went into the Windows configuration to disable TeaTimer on system boot and rebooted.
Even so, I cannot start Spybot-S&D. When I double click on the desktop icon, I have waited as long as eight(!) minutes, and the window will not come up. Ctl-Alt-Del shows Spybotsd in memory, but absolutely nothing happens. Because the window will not come up, I cannot say what subversion of 1.5 is installed. All I can do is kill the task.
As I say, I am not a sophisticated user, but I need an anti-malware program, and Spybot S&D was recommended to me. But is doesn't work. If you need additional information, I will provide it as best I am able. Thank you.
