Hi,

New to this forum but I've been reading it for a while. I recently came across outerinfo and am having trouble completely removing it.

After running a full scan of Spybot, I was able to gain use of my system.

After that, AdAware didn't find any problems.

AVG 7.5 (Free) continues to find problems here and there.

Not really sure where to start, but my HijackThis logs are below:

Sorry, I don't mean to be reposting to get this up to the front. But I've been checking around my machine and I've noticed the following in My Documents:

a "Microsoft" folder containing "msiexec"

an "Oracle" folder containing two "Javaw" items.

I should also note that I installed Norton Internet Security 2008

Hi Jim Clark

Your HijackThis is outdated:

Click here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thanks for getting back to me

My computer seems to have gotten a little faster thanks to the changes my friend helped me with (mentioned in my waiting room post). Its still a little slower than normal and I don't know how to interpret HTJ results yet.

" # DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
# DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. "

--Learned this the heard way over the weekend... had to reinstall Office because I thought Office Source Engine looked suspicious... lesson learned

Here is my HTJ log... it could even be clean at this point, I don't know how to interpret to know for sure.

Hi

At least some vundo leftovers, we'll see if some more:

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

I wasn't able to find the ComboFix log when I put c:\ComboFix.txt in the "Run" part of the start menu... instead, I had to find it manually... is that a problem?

It also changed my clock setting but didn't change it back... should I do this myself?

Here is the log:

Also, since encountering the Outerinfo malware, I have had Outlook Express in my Start Menu.. it had never been there before, and I wasn't even aware I had it on my machine. I checked after the ComboFix and its still there. I'm afraid to open it to see if there's been any activity on it (I don't use outlook or outlook express).

This definitely wasn't my configuration before encountering the malware.... is this a problem?

I just pulled the properties on Outlook express.... it was created at the same time I encountered OuterInfo... around 9:12 PM on Jan 19th (5 days ago)

Sorry for overposting, but I have just found another result of this malware...

I went to add "Outerinfo.com" to my list of restricted sites in Internet Explorer (I primarily use firefox but I just wanted to be safe), and I wasn't able to. A notification popped up saying:

"The site you specified already exists in another zone. Please remove the site from that zone before adding it to the current zone"

It doesn't tell me which "zone" outerinfo.com is in. I checked my Trusted Sites and its not in there. It seems like Outerinfo has infested my machine in several different ways

Hi and sorry for delay.

That outerinfo.com is no problem, once you're clean we install hosts file to your computer which prevents you from accessing that site totally.

Yes, you can change it back.

Outerinfo won't install outlook express to your computer, so it's been there before.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

Copy/paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box and click Submit/Send (depends on which one you are using Jotti or VirusTotal).

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winsdrv.dll

Repeat steps for all files on the list.

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report
- jotti/virustotal results

Shaba,

Yesterday while waiting, I looked at the two ctfmon's on my machine and noticed one was created at the exact same time as the malware infection. I then renamed this file and deleted it with the standalone Spybot Shredder product. It is not showing up in System32, but Spybot is showing it as a Startup Process. One of these processes is checked and one is unchecked, but I'm not sure which one is the right one.

Anyway, does the deleting of the new ctfmon change the procedure you gave me in any way ?

Thanks

Shaba

Hi

No, it wont change anything :)

ComboFix seems to be stuck at a blank windows screen (with no ComboFix window, only my desktop background w/ no icons).

I was not able to find any of these processes when I went to the task manager: findstr, find, sed or swreg. In the task manager, ComboFix doesn't show up either.

The last thing that happened was that ComboFix said it was preparing a log report.

I am a little confused on this part of your instructions (copied below):

"

Please click this link-->Jotti

"

Can you explain this another way? I'm a little confused on this aspect...

Hi

You should copy/paste this -->
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winsdrv.dll
to jottis File to upload & scan: box

After that, click submit and post back results, please.

Neither site was able to find this file... I tried to enter it manually and use the browse function... neither worked.

I also looked in the System32 folder and didn't see it

Did you see my ComboFix / HTJ logs from the previous page? I just didnt want them to get lost in all these posts

Hi

No need :)

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shelliconoverlayidentifiers\ZipFile]
@=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2D7E38A6-A604-45AE-9A87-4F5F25760650}]

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Ok

by the way, would this same process remove this item (below)? I haven't been able to remove it through Spybot S&D since encountering the malware... previously S&D would remove anything it encountered

Windows Explorer: [SBI $6107D172] User Assistant history files (61
files) (Registry key, fixing failed)

Hi

Yes, but not needed as it's only MRU entry and not malware.

Jim Clark
2008-01-26, 20:58
My only concern with the MRU is that I don't understand why I used to be able to delete all MRUs before encountering the malware and now I can't...

Here is the ComboFix log. I started it and left the room for only a few minutes and it was already done. The computer did not seem to have restarted.

ComboFix doesn't seem to produce the log on my machine, I have to go find it in C:\ComboFix.

This is the file that I found there. The time says 13:47 so I'm guessing its from this last scan even though the scan was so quick

Hi

I see that you have disabled McAfee.

Is it outdated?

Jim Clark
2008-01-28, 17:54
My machine came with McAfee. I used that until it expired and I switched to AVG. After encountering the malware, I installed Norton Internet Security 2008.

McAfee keeps showing up despite running the uninstall tool, but I think I have it entirely disabled

Hi

Then we remove next McAfee leftovers:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe.tmp

Folder::
c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only!

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

The "locked" files in C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository are files that I manually quarantined in Norton 2008 because I suspected them to be malicious.... I know exactly when I encontered the malware (9:12 PM on January 19th), so I did a search of all files modified or created on that day. I think these files relate to the suspicious Outlook Express shortcut I mentioned a few posts ago.

There are a few other files which I manually quarantined in Norton due to them having been created or modified around the same time as the malware infection.

Here is a fresh HTJ log:

Hi

Those files should be fine.

Empty these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\
C:\VundoFix Backups\
C:\QooBox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

All other viruses are in system restore and inactive.

I give you later instructions how to empty it.

Other than that, any problems left?

Jim Clark

I emptied deleted the items and emptied the recycle bin.

I almost want to switch over to Kaspersky since it seemed to detect a lot more than Norton did.

Other than that MRU I used to be able to delete and now can't, I think everything is functioning fine.

Hi

"I almost want to switch over to Kaspersky since it seemed to detect a lot more than Norton did. "

Yes, Kaspersky is really good. You might consider that after Norton subscription is over :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnerable for infections.
Please download the newest version here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_servefile.html?option=full&order=1&type=&language=English&platform=WinXPSP2&esdcanbeused=0&esdcanhandle=0&hasjavascript=1&dlm=nos

Install it, then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any older versions that may remain.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt2 attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for Spybot S & D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay.

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Standard, giving me the ability to create / customize PDF's. Will I lose this ability if I switch over to the Reader?

I'm not familiar with Otmoveit2 (but I wasn't with ComboFix until now either)... will I run into any false positives, etc, that I should aware of?

Hi

Yes you will. Then please don't upgrade it.

"I'm not familiar with Otmoveit2 (but I wasn't with ComboFix until now either)... will I run into any false positives, etc, that I should aware of?"

It will just remove tools we used and nothing more :) So no worries.

" All other viruses are in system restore and inactive.

I give you later instructions how to empty it. "

Did running Otmoveit2 empty the viruses in system restore or is that another step?

This is minor but somewhere along this process I seem to have lost the volume control icon on my task bar (in the right hand section)... could that have anything to do with the malware I encountered?

other than that, everything seems to be running like new

I am going to familiarize myself with WinPatrol and the other tools tomorrow.
