View Full Version : Browser result redirect malware with IE7

Greetings
I have a search result redirect issue with my web browser that I can't make go away. My Nortons and Ad Aware were not able to find anything. I have read the "BEFORE you POST" document and have downloaded and run the Spybot, the Kasperskys and the HJT programs as was described in the "BEFORE you POST". I did have one problem with running the Spybot in that it would find and claim to fix a registery entry called Zlob.DNSChanger.Rtk: However when I re-run Spybot the entry is back. I'm in college and I do a lot of web searches for papers and this thing is killing my productivity. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the HJT log that was requested for a first post. I can't post the Kasperskys log on this post because it is two long. I will post it when someone picks up the post.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Thanks for posting the correct information. Read and follow the directions carefuly, the tools will not work unless you do. If you should have any of these tools, delete them and download them from the links I provide.

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2) Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Recap: Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the report.txt from Fixwareout and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, let's proceed like this.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart, post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Did all the SmitfraudFix operations and restrored my trusted Zones. However I have gotten to the part where I need to download ATF Cleaner and I can't get to the website to download it at the link given. Is there a mirror that I can download it at? I have not gone on to the HiJack this system scan yet until I can get the ATF Cleaner.

Any Thoughts??

I found a mirror for the ATF Cleaner and downloaded and saved it. I performed the HJT processes then ran the ATF Cleaner. I have rebooted. The computer is screaming along with no glitches and best of all I've done searches with a couple of search engines and there are no re-directs:bigthumb: Here are the rapport and the HJT logs.

is still down at 4 AM EST and that is a bummer as that is also the location of Vundofix which is a major tool used worldwide. Likely that hackers have something to do with it.

check Java for an update, there should be one.

You HJT log looks clean:bigthumb: and Kaspersky showed no malware last scan. Since all appears to be running well, delete all of the programs (they do not update and must be downloaded new if needed) the exception is ATF-Cleaner, you may keep that nice, small cleaning tool if you wish.
