Hi, I'm new to the forums and I've never really had a problem with malware. Usually S&D will do the trick but I have been battling for days...

Each time I run S&D, it catches about 40 some different things, and says they are fixed, but they come back...

Some of the issues I've been having are...

windows.exe process has been running and using about 700M of mem
I have 3 different icons in my taskbar telling me I have spyware on my computer
I get a "Warning! Potential Spyware Operation" pop-up
The icon for my C: drive is now a red X
Properties of folders will not let me change the viewing to "show hidden files"
...and others...

I'm also new to HijackThis, so if someone could help me out and talk me through this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Computer has become nearly useless, since the windows.exe process opens every 5-10 minutes and I have to spend 5 minutes shutting down the process over and over again to free up memory to perform any other task. Also, I can't navigate through C: drive. When I open it there are 100's of pos####.tmp files. Spybot and lavasoft both pick up .Zlob every time they run. Last time the computer froze, I turned it back on and only about half of the processes started... If I go to end a process manually now, the computer beeps very loudly at me.

Some pop-ups seemed to go away. Still having the issue with the windows.exe file running every 10 or so minutes until I end the process 10-15 times. Still have all of the temp files under my C: drive, and few critical error pop-ups on the task bar.

Drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe


Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:

Click OK.

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.Once the scan is complete:

Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post if the AV content will fit into one post only. Post also ComboFix resultant log and a fresh hjt log.
If the results of the anti virus scan itself will take more than one post to contain, you may upload it to http://rapidshare.com


Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

If having a problme doing the above

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.
* Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings.

When running ComboFix, I noticed findstr running almost the whole time... ending the process didn't do anything. It re-opened. swreg also open a couple times for a few seconds.

I noticed the F3: ddayv.exe was back in my HJT. I checked it and went to remove before I did the CFscript thing like I was told to. Also, when I open a firefox browser, I get an error that said something dealing with the ddayv file. But then firefox opened fine.

Clear Spybot recovery (first aid kit icon in Spybot program).

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):

Save this as
CFScript (overwrite previous one)


Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post ComboFix log & a fresh hjt log.


Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

What about Dell Support, SunJava and McAfee? Do I really need to uninstall these via add/remove programs? I don't know how to reinstall Dell Support and I know Java is painful when installing for the first time. When I went to remove Dell Support, I get a message saying "I will no longer be able to use PC TuneUp." I don't even know what PC TuneUp is.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):

Close browsers & other windows.

Then create that uninstall list we talked about earlier.

Generate an Uninstall List

* Open HijackThis
* Click on Open Misc Tools Section
* Click on Open Uninstall Manager
* Click on Save list
* Save it to your Desktop
* Post it and a fresh hjt log on your next reply.
