1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave this off until we finish)
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

I didn't realize that you replied to me so fast. I subscribed to the thread but it must have ben rejected as spam. I have my spam filter set prety strict. I dumped my spam folder and hopefully once I post this reply I will be able to spot the e-mail and whitelist it.
It may also be helpfull for you to know that I have a RAID mirror running. There is a monitoring program that runs at OS startup to keep tabs on the integrity of the mirror. Kaspersky won't let that application start for some reason. Consequently, before every reboot, I must suspend Kaspersky and reactivate it once all processes have been restored. I worry that this leaves me vulnerable to some extent. I have addressed the problem with Kaspersky and I am awaiting their reply.
I could not locate the program "viewpoint" in the "add/remove programs" or on the hard drive in the specified locations.
I uninstalled the "fedexkinkos" tool. I don't use it anyway.
I disabled my licensed version of Kaspersky while performing the tasks you outlined to ensure that it would not interfear.
TeaTimer has been disabled and remains so untill you tell me otherwise.
ATF cleaner downloaded.
The HJT items you listed were fixed with the exception of the Kinkos tool that I removed. It no longer shows on the scan.
ATF cleaner ran on "main" and "firefox"
ComboFix downloaded and executed successfully. Logs follow.
Following task completion, I reactivated Kaspersky and it immediately quarantined "ComboFix". I have restored it from quarantine and added it as a "trusted application" with no restrictions.
I would like to take this oportunity to convey my deepest gratitude for your time and assistance.

Thanks for returning your information, you have a fairly new, very nasty variety of the Virtumonde infection, here is some information:
http://www.viruslist.com/en/weblog?weblogid=208187466
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Vundo+file+infector&btnG=Google+Search
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
This variety infects program files and the ones you see in the blue "code" box are infected at the least and wili likely have to be uninstall and reinstalled. You also have
this infection: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=core.cache.dsk&btnG=Search which I think has something to do with Zedo that has to be removed. While I am familiar with that one, I have not removed this Vundo infection and want you to be aware that you have the option of reformat since some programs have to be reinstalled anyway.
Here is information: http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm
If you would prefer that to a complex cleaning proceedure, let me know.
Thanks...Phil

It seams that my problem is worse than I thought.
because you indicated that we are dealing with a relatively knew virus, I am going to brief you an aparently unrelated issues just incase something might tie things together for you:
I did have Vundo but used a popular removal tool and it hasn't shown its ugly face since. Are we just seing residual footprints or is it really still there?
I was browsing through the registry last night looking for certain known problems and did see entries for "catchme" and although I assumed it was malware, I left it alone so as not to sep on your toes while you are helping.
I have very little experiance with the windows registry but have made certain minor edits in the past. I noticed last night that there is a "history" of websites including a crapload of gay porn sites. Good grief! From experiance I also remember that the registry keeps records of every application ever installed even after they are gone. Is there a way to clean all of the old crap out of the registry?
I uninstalled "golden palace casino" from my machine a long time ago but it still shows in the "add/remove programs". I can't get rid of it. I did finally delete the entire program folder from the hard drive just for space..
My active Kaspersky aplication indicates frequent atempts to "modify" explorer.exe and frequent atempts to establish a connection to and from unknown IP addresses
Unfortunately, reformat is not an option. Can we roll up our sleeves and dive in?

Exactly what tool did you use? From the combofix report, as I indicated, you can see in the blue box the programs this file infector has infected. Those programs will have to likely have to be uninstalled and reinstalled after all infection is removed, proceed like this.
Open Notepad and copy all the text inside the quote box by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above File::
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\oprghdlrr.sys
Folder::

Save this as CFScript to your Desktop.
Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks

Exactly what tool did you use?
Here is the tool I used that claims to remove vundo:
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/
I read quite a few success stories about it in a number of forums. This is something I did before I started this thread.
http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=%22vundofix.exe%22
I am at work now and will proceed with your instructions as soon as I get home.

I am seeing no good reason why that fix did not work the first time, have a look at this example:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=23142
Let's try again:
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
RenV::
----a-w 455,968 2008-01-22 03:20:08 C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LightScribeControlPanel .exe
----a-w 151,552 2008-01-22 03:19:52 C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PCM4Everio\EverioService .exe
----a-w 132,496 2008-01-22 03:19:46 C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched .exe
----a-w 77,824 2008-01-22 04:05:01 C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
----a-w 94,208 2008-01-22 03:19:52 C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003\GhostStartTrayApp .exe
Save this as "CFScript"
Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks

I followed the exact same steps as in "round 2" but with the new code.
It apears to be gone!
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
I can't find it now! I also run a spybot scan and it came up clean!
Thank you SOOO much for all of your help!
Did you look at thay "vundofix.exe" info? Again, this is from just before we started but I found the log file generated by vundofix and thought I would post it. You may finde it interesting if not helpfull.

That item was gone earlier, here:
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Other Deletions )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\oprghdlrr.sys
It was the infected files in the programs in the code box that were the concern.
Thanks for the vundofix log, I use that tool all of the time to clean vundo files, but to my knowledge it does not clean the files infected by this new version of vundo.
Remove vundofix if it is still on the computer and combofix and the C:\qoobox\quarantine folder from the computer and run a Kaspersky Online Scan using these settings:
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here. I don't need to see it if it is clean, let me know about any malware issues.
Thanks

I just wanted to take one last message to tell you that I really apreciate your help in bringing my system back to life. Hopefully with Kaspersky running full time I will be able to better prevent such things in the future.
May the Gods smile on you for your help and kindness.

I purchased my computer second-hand but the OS and software were all suposed to be legit. A couple of months ago my OS authentication failed and I have not been able to get any updates since. Now that the malware is gone, it works again. I finaly have windows properly updated! HURAY!
