Hi,

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on an IPC laptop with Genuine Intel[R] CPU T 2080 @ 1.73 GHz, 1.73 GHz, 960 MB of RAM.

My problem is that I seem to have downloaded one or more viruses to my computer. I was informed by Grisoft's AVG 7.5 that threats had been found and I've tried to remove them with Spybot S+D and AVG but to no avail.

I saw "zlob" and "outerinfo" on the first scan and they seem to have gone now. There is an icon in the task bar which is a small green circle overlayed by a red circle with an exclamation mark which is telling me that my computer may be infected with harmful or unwanted software, although I don't trust it and think this may be one of the viruses.

I have followed the instructions in the post: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance)" and will post my HJT log now followed by the Kaspersky one. I note that after running Spybot in safe mode the strange icon in the taskbar has come back.

1) Are you sure this is safe?
http://www.castlecops.com/tk39448-worldtvradio_Toolbar.html

Some Conduit toolbars are reputed to have a certain adware/trackware functionality.

2) Post a complete HJT log like this:
Notepad > Edit > Select All > Copy/Paste highlited information.

3) Post an uninstall list like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Hi pskelley,

Thanks for your response. I hope I have followed your instructions properly.

1) I am not sure that toolbar is safe, in fact it was around the time I downloaded it that the problems started. I do not need it.

2) Oops, sorry, it looks like I didn't post it properly. Here is the HJT log:

Thanks for returning the HJT log and your feedback, I am not sure how badly you are infected and need to investigate a little. I would like you to keep the computer offline when you are not troubleshooting, this junk can download more.

1) worldtvradio Toolbar <<< uninstall this in AddRemove programs

2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Good morning David,
You are infected and you also have this problem:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !

In the next C:\rapport.txt the hosts file is likely to be very large, please edit that hosts file out of the C:\rapport.txt before you post it, it will be items starting with 127.0.0.1

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Add any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Hi pskelley,

I have followed your instructions and wasn't prompted to replace any infected files by SmitFraudFix.exe.

However, when I rebooted Windows I was presented with the following error message: "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvteb.dll". I clicked ok and nothing seemed to be affected. Then, AVG popped a window open with a red entry and began running a full scan. The entry was "Potentially harmful program HackTool.BVR" located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.JAMESCOMP\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\Reboot.exe". It has moved the file to its vault.

Also, Spybot Resident is asking me to allow or deny a change to the registry for entry "avp" located at "C:\WINDOWS\system32\winver.exe". I haven't selected an option yet.

Here is the new HJT log:

Thanks for returning your information, and the feedback, this:

The entry was "Potentially harmful program HackTool.BVR" located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.JAMESCOMP\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\Reboot.exeis part of Smitfraudfix, I posted a disclaimer in the beginning for process.exe, it is unusual for AVG (which I run also) to flag Reboot.exe. It looks like Smitfraudfix did the job already and that might not be a problem, we will see. You can see the Smitfraudfix files here:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Bitmaps/Folder.png

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

5) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvteb.dll <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmfu32.dll <<< delete that file

If either of those files gives you trouble, use this tool and directions.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log so I can see how we did.

Thanks

Hi pskelley,

I have a done an online virus scan with Kaspersky and it has found 2 viruses and 2 infected objects.

I noted when deleting C:\Program Files\RegistryCleanerXP\RegistryCleanerXP.exe I saw a folder in Program Files called "Registry Mechanic". I don't recognise or use this. I couldn't find "Registry Mechanic" in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Also, I encountered a folder called "xerox" I don't use or recognise which contained a folder called "nwwia" which is seemingly empty, even after altering the settings in Tools. However, when I try to delete the folder I am told it is being used by another person or program and cannot be deleted.

I will attach the Kaspersky log now:

Hi David, thanks for the feedback. Registry Mechanic is a valid program, this is your computer is it not?
http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/
xerox is likely valid: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xerox&btnG=Search
See this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=nwwia&btnG=Search
These could be programs installed when you purchased you never used, I would investigate before removing something you are not sure of.
If you are sure you want it delete, boot to safe mode and delete it there.
