Been having trouble with search engine redirects  (Google and MSN Search Engine). By looking at some other threads it seems that Pipas.A is the culprit. It has shown up everytime I run Spybot. I also run Ad-Aware SE, Xoftspy, use Symantec Anti-virus and the windows firewall.
:confused: {Side note: what is your opinion of XoftSpy? Was nailed by SpySheriff over Christmas and could not recover my hijacked desktop with any of the other programs. Desperate, I purchased the XoftSpy program and it did recover my desktop as the "free" scan said it would. Have heard that it may be less than reputable and is no more effective than any "freeware" Now that I am a little more educated I would prefer to fix things myself...and for free no less.}
Anyways...any help would be appreciated.:)

Here is my HJT log:

Hello and welcome to the forum. It seems some nice folks in the Ukraine decided your computer needed hacked: http://www.whois.sc/85.255.113.134 This is Wareout and the fix is a little complicated and time consuming(that's me) . The hackers have figured out a way to morph an item and return the infection if it is not done right (that's you):bigthumb: . So I do not have to set this up for you if you have already resolved the issue, I would appreciate it if you would post a fresh HJT log. Once you post I will respond with the instructions as soon as possible after that.

Thanks...pskelley

First I would like to say Thank You:bigthumb: , to you and everyone like you, who work hard and diligently to counter the scum that create garbage like this. I will admit I am a bit of a amateur when it comes to stuff like this so I will do my best. BTW what is Wareout?

 as long as you don't ask me what's Google!!

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Wareout%3F&btnG=Google+Search

I have been at this since 5 AM EST (Clearwater, Florida) I need some Sunday time and will try to post today. I do suggest you stay offline as much as possibly until we clean the Ukrainians out of your computer.

Ok, will do. I assume that this wareout does more than just redirect search engine result clicks. What about passwords, banking related, online billpay etc. Thats my real concern....even tho my accounts are empty:( ...broke.

Thank You for fighting the good fight,

OK, let's do this, I have just gone through two of these successfully but they were both battles as we learned about the morphing item during the fixes. Understand that that this line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmzxy.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmzxy.exe that you are going to remove during the HJT portion of the fix, is going to morph on reboot. You will have to locate the new item which will be fairly close to the one you just removed and kill it. Until this is done the infection will remain. Here is the way the information was given to me, read it over several times in fact you should print the information.

NOTE:
With this infection, it is important you tell the victim, when hijackthis opens after reboot, before the rest loads, (s)he needs to check and fix the random O4 entry starting with dm***.exe
This one will always change after reboot. If that entry is not fixed, it will load again and rename, keeping the infection alive.

Here is the fix, follow it carefully:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts
Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmzxy.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmzxy.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\ProgramFiles\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe

Then click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Once you are sure Wareout has not returned a morphed line to the log, then post the two logs bolded above and I will take a look.

Thanks...Phil

Ok here are the initial results. However these two lines were not removed as you suggested b/c they were not listed in HJT:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: "C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC\UnSpyPC.exe"

I ran FixWareout as ordered. HJT ran and I removed all items you suggested except the above mentioned two items. I saved the WareoutLog and rebooted. I ran HJT and saved the log.
The 04-HKLM\..\Run: {dmzxy.exe}** variant was not listed so in HJT so I removed nothing on the reboot.
Here are the results:

Ok I also change the setting in the 'Network Connections' that you suggested. I am curious to the purpose of this action.

Thanks

OK and thanks for the information. This infection which as I said earlier appears to have originated somewhere in the old Soviet Union, appears in many forms. The hackers access your computer here: http://www.yale.edu/pclt/COMM/TCPIP.HTM and change your settings to suit their needs, thus the reason for needing to return the settings to what they should be. I am not sure how the trojan gets on the computer, use google to do some investigating if you are interested. The name itself, I believe, came from a bogus spyware program offered in popups that of course added more infections when it was clicked on.
Here are a couple of links that might be of interest:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wareout/ and http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/allpage-100.html I have only dealt with 1/2 dozon or so of these and each one appeared to be different. I believe you can credit LonnyRJones for the fix.

You HJT log appears to be clean of malware at the posted time, here is one item you may want to look at:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs and information: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-4638.html If you want this item off your computer, you can ask the agent who put it there to be sure you can safely remove it, you may want to tell them how you feel about it at the time? It can then be removed by using HJT to remove the line, this will stop the process. Before a reboot navigate to the file and delete it. You might ask if you can delete the folder if it is not used.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

System Restore does not know good from bad, it backs up everything. In case some of the infection got into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, restart your computer and turn it back on.

If I can do more, let me know...safe surfing and great job of following the complex instructions...Phil:bigthumb:

The cold war continues in cyberspace!
Thanks for all your help. I used google search engine and did not get redirected anywhere so all seems good 2 go.
As for the line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

this is some sort of support agent that is part of Sony Viao's package and came preloaded on my computer. I have never used it and never will so I am going to delete it when I get home tonight. (this post is from my computer at work). Is deleting the process using HJT enough to stop it or do I need to find the file folder and do some manual deletion?

Also I have Symantec AntiVirus program, however I am having trouble with enableing the "real time" protection:scratch: . I have heard that running multiple AntiVirus programs is not good and can cause conflicts. Should i scrap it and go with something like AVG?

I will get my wifes paypal info and send a "Donation" when I get home.
Keep fighting the good fight!:bigthumb:
Thanks for all,
Griffin175

Sounds good what you said :bigthumb: Do get into those links, those are some of the sharpest folks I know when it come to security. As to your other questions, I have never used a Symantec product, but many folks swear my it. I have used McAfee for years and have three computers running on one subscription. AVG is a good free product. I installed it on my sisters new Dell, but remember that there is no support for that price. I understand Symantec has good support, email/chat and here is where you would start: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/
If you want to see if they can fix the problem. Here is the link to a good free peer to peer forum in the event you choose AVG: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/index.php?0

This one: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs if you don't use it delete the folder: This one: c:\program files\support.com\ <<< folder. Let it set in the recycle bin for a couple of weeks to be sure.

Thanks for your thoughts, we are all volunteers but I am sure the folks who run the site can find a use for any donations.

Safe surfing...Phil
