Hi folks,

I am fairly new to having my computer hijacked, but now that my 3 kids have started using the computer I can not control all the clicks.

My IE was taken over, and unwanted ads keep popping up, and msconfig shows unknown .exe programs that I can not kill. I took some steps before becoming desperate for help, so let me lay out those steps.

1) tried to go to an old restore - failed - no old restore points were accessible
2) add/remove programs - removed many programs unknown to me
3) some programs that would not let me remove them - I went into C: drive and removed the files
4) tried to control some start up programs via msconfig
5) dl'd ad aware 2007 and ran it 2x, removed over 300 things
6) dl's spybot search and destroy, ran immunize then removed all suggested problems, note that a 'delete' command keeps popping up almost as if the spyware is fighting the spybot and in fact without my consent spybot was shut down (it just disappeared from the task bar)
7) went into system32, considering deleting .dll's created 2/3/2008, then started to read up on hijackthis
8) dl'd hijackthis, ran it, considering deleting entries, decided to post first (the us4 stuff has to go)

Well, here is the log. What a painful 8 hours :) Browsing the internet is very slow, even to look for help, because each search spawns 2 windows that I have to stop and say 'no' to the active X prompt.

Hi

Navigate into C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder and rename HijackThis.exe file -> Leitari.exe. Post a fresh hjt log after renaming is done :)

Hi,

I am having trouble navigating. Sorry for the slow response. Spybot is finding registry entries that are being changed, and if I deny them they start an infinite loop. Below is the rerun hjt log.

Each IE window also spawns an IE window with:
res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm

Hi

1. Download this file -
combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your
next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause
it to stall

ok, things are running a lot cleaner right now, I am starting to think there is hope. But I also ran into some issues so let me describe it all to you.

I followed the 'how to use combofix' guide by creating a windows recovery console. I shut down ad aware and TeaTimer. Double click combofix.exe & followed the prompts.

Combofix ran well at the start, then everything disappeared. Computer looked frozen. I waited 45 minutes to be safe. Then I alt-tab-delete, got the task manager. I did not see any programs like findstr, find, sed, or swreg running. I waited a full hour, then I used task manager to restart.

Upon restart, spybot s&d started to run. combofix was also running in the background. I used task manager to stop ad aware and TeaTimer. Combofix finished and generated a log for me as follows:

ComboFix 08-02.05.3 - Owner 2008-02-06 2:33:19.1 - NTFSx86

Again, I am feeling so happy right now, I was able to post the above without seeing multiple IE windows spawn.

Below I complete your assignement by posting the updated hjt log.

Please let me know if I need to redo any steps because TeaTimer or Ad Aware launch on each start up.

Hi

We're not done yet :)

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as
CFScript

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Re-run Kaspersky online scanner and post its report, ComboFix log and a fresh hjt log.

I will post combofix log, then latest hjt, then kaspersky as assigned. Kaspersky log may be delayed as it takes a while to run.

ok. MarketBrowser shows up in add/remove programs, but it does not allow me to remove it (installation support file could not be installed). A file search does not find it, and folder C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser does not exist.

All 6 hjt entries were found, checked, and fixed.

Delete following files if found:
(not found) C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\win32.exe
(found and deleted and removed from recycle bin) C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\slx.exe

and folder:
(not found) C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

If the service pack 2 download is too large, you can order a copy on cd from microsoft here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#scanners) to choose one

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#firewalls) to choose one

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Thank you so much for your help! This was a wonderful experience.

One final issue (I can live with it):

I am not able to double click 'My Computer' because the system hangs - I use task manager to restart the computer and it shows me explorer.exe is not responding.

To get around this, on each and every restart, I found I can go to "Start->My Documents" and from there navigate to 'My Computer'. In addition, from that point on, I can double click 'My Computer'. Once I restart, if I try to double click 'My Computer', explorer.exe hangs, and again I can fix this by first visiting "Start->My Documents" then navigating to 'My Computer'.

OTMoveIt2 removed all but ATF-Cleaner.exe and the renamed HiJackThis. Should I just keep these on my desktop?

I will work on all the homework you assigned next. If I were to summarize, it appears you recommend running all these types of programs:
1) ad aware
2) spybot
3) boclean
4) spyware blaster
5) iespyad
6) hosts file
7) anti virus software
8) firewall

Few questions:

1) Should I turn TeaTimer back on?
2) I do not use, and I do not like, ms messenger. It was in the hjt log (09).
3) Why does (08) excel.exe/3000 show up in the hjt log (I use excel, but rarely)
4) Can I turn off WkDetect using msconfig? I do not use works at all (I think).
5) I have one other computer that I considered secure, and a kas scan showed one virus. Can I start a thread for that issue, or would your forums prefer I deal with that on my own due to the volumes you deal with here.

Upgraded to SP2, and I can now click My Computer with no hang ups. I'll continue the homework.

Hi

You can remove HijackThis but I recommend keeping ATFCleaner and running it occasionally to get rid of not needed temporary files.

Answers to your questions:
1) Yes.

2) You can uninstall Windows Messenger by following next instructions:

Go to Start --> All programs --> Control panel --> Add remove programs

Select the add/remove windows components (third down in the left hand column).

Where it says "components" scroll down to the bottom and deselect the Windows Messenger check box.

Click Next wait for it to finish click finish and your done.

3) That entry is created when Excel is installed. Nothing to worry about :)

4) Yes.

5) Yes, you can start a thread for it.

Almost done...I do not want to make mistakes now.

I tried to remove McAfee virus scan online scanner and Agent in "add or remove programs" and I was unable to complete the operation.

This seems a necessary step because other anti virus software tells me:

Please make sure you uninstall any other antivirus program before installing Kaspersky. Multiple antivirus programs on the same machine will conflict.

I also followed your instructions to remove Windows Messenger, but it persists in the hjt log:

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

I have SpyBlaster working...my one question there is how exactly does it work when I do not see any processes for it in task manager?

Windows updates complete - SP2 now, IE7, firewall on
BOClean on
SpywareBlaster on (I think, can't tell)
TeaTimer on

ToDo still: iespyad, hosts, anti virus software

I have not used the computer yet, except to perform all the downloads and updated.

Right now TeaTimer is denying a change (resident denied change of browser helper object) nonstop.

Here is the result of a spybot/kas/hjt run:

Hi

I tried to remove McAfee virus scan online scanner and Agent in "add or remove programs" and I was unable to complete the operation.

This seems a necessary step because other anti virus software tells me:

Please make sure you uninstall any other antivirus program before installing Kaspersky. Multiple antivirus programs on the same machine will conflict.
Online scanners won't cause any troubles. So, you don't need to remove any of them :)

I also followed your instructions to remove Windows Messenger, but it persists in the hjt log:

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
Don't mind about those.

I have SpyBlaster working...my one question there is how exactly does it work when I do not see any processes for it in task manager?
Yes, SpywareBlaster not visible in any running processes list. As I told you in my earlier post it makes changes in registry. So, if you didn't get any error while installing then it should work.

I'm not sure but it looks like turning teatimer on brought back some registry entries. So, time to turn teatimer off again.

After teatimer is turned off start hjt, do a system scan, check:

I left this morning for work, before your reply, and I left with Kaspersky Anti-Virus software running. I had turned off TeaTimer (due to the infinite registry loop).

Note that I had to uninstall Comodo BOClean, because Kaspersky install said it was not compatible.

Kaspersky found 3 infections:
1) exploit.html.mht in a system volume info\_restore location
2) exploit.html.mht in a TrendMicro\HTJ\backups location
3) packed.win32.tibs in c:\windows\downloadedprograms\win32.exe

I deleted the infections. Note that the log tells me the exploit.html.mht in a TrendMicro\HTJ\backups location could not be deleted.

I then ran hjt, and checked all 9 items you listed. All 9 were still present. I then 'fixed checked'.

Note that this file no longer exists:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\win32.exe
so I did not perform your OTMoveIt steps.

However, I went into C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files to take a look, and I did see this entry. I have taken NO action, but I want you to know the entry, which hjt does not seem to find:

{02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B} with no creation date.

Here is the newly generated hjt log:

Kaspersky scan - clear
Ad Aware - clear
Spybot - clear

Looking good.

Question - should I uninstall Spybot, turn off system restore, turn on system restore, download Spybot, all before turning TeaTimer on again?

Hi

However, I went into C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files to take a look, and I did see this entry. I have taken NO action, but I want you to know the entry, which hjt does not seem to find:

{02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B} with no creation date.
I believe that's legal one.

Question - should I uninstall Spybot, turn off system restore, turn on system restore, download Spybot, all before turning TeaTimer on again?
That might be the safest way :)

Blade,

Thanks so much for your time and help! I felt like I had lost my computer a few days ago, and your help turned it back under my control.

This is my final post unless you ask for more information. Everything is running great, and I have completed all these steps:

1) ad aware
2) spybot
3) boclean (later uninstalled to avoid anti virus software conflicts)
4) spyware blaster
5) iespyad
6) hosts file
7) anti virus software
8) firewall

I am also fully updated with win xp sp2 and all ms updates like ie7 (from sp1 and ie6).

Cheers!
