View Full Version : Infected with Downloader.agent.bhp

After attempting to clear my computer with Ad-Ware, AVG Anti-spy, spybot, mcafee, and spyware doctor, I've decided that I need some expert help.

AVG reports the infection as Downloader.agent.bhp, but rebooting as required does not clear the system. Kaspersky reports two infections, Trojan-Downloader.win32.agent.hbp once, and Spamtool.win32.agent.et twice. My CPU is running at 100% all the time.

As requested, here is the HJT log:

The Kaspersky Scan is too long to post in its entirety. I can post it next if needed. What follows is what I hope are the gory details--I deleted several lines that appeared innocuous to me. (I know, "a little knowledge is very dangerous.")

Spybot scan was clean, BTW.
I'd be grateful for any help you can provide!

Hi Jim, welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

What program is reporting this stuff? AVG Anti-Spyware? Won't the program delete or at least quarantine the junk? McAfee is not finding it?

I am not real sure what this is but Kaspersky is showing it like this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\prx93f_.dll ------> SpamTool.Win32.Agent.et
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\wsil32.dll ------> Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.hbp

and it has infected one System Restore file so we have to clean SR:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{BFAA719B-281F-45B6-9E39-9D4BB578C2A4}\RP486\A0051590.dll ------> SpamTool.Win32.Agent.eh

I looked in my C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and I do not have that AppCert folder and google has little to say about it also, does this mean anything to you?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=AppCert&btnG=Google+Search
If not you might just want to delete the folder.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\prx93f_.dll & wsil32.dll <<< for sure delete the files in red, you might need to boot to safe mode to do it.

You can try this tool:
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

HJT is showing no malware and I am surprised these items are causing those CPU spikes, but delete the junk, empty the recycle bin and then follow these instructions to clean System Restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

Let me know if that takes care of the problem.

Thanks...Phil

Thank you Phil! Your remedies worked perfectly, and the computer is running well. HijackThis' delete on reboot did the trick, and I cleared the SR as instructed.

BTW, before your miracle suggestions, AVG was reporting the problems and quarantined them, but would not delete them on reboot. McAfee did not catch any of this, neither did Spybot or Ad-Ware.

Oh, and I haven't a clue what AppCert did, but it apparently housed some pretty nasty stuff.

AVG now shows the computer as clean. The CPU usage now fluctuates as it should, averaging in the 60% range during high demand, and falling to less than 5% during low demand, instead of being pegged at 100%.

Other than to thank you for saving me from frustrations, headaches, hours and hours of pointless attempts to fix this, and probably lots of money to have someone try to help, is there anything else I should do?

Whoa Jim, I never expect anything to be this easy? Keep in mind the purveyors are doing all they can to keep up with the hackers, seems the hackers have unlimited $$$ and time to do their dirty, but they do depend on the users to provide the breach in security, look how easy you can get infected.
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/11/07/rogue_antispyware_ads/
and your security programs never see it happen.

If you flushed the System Restore points, you should be good to go. I suggest a last Kaspersky scan to make sure we missed nothing and I do not need to see a clean scan.
