View Full Version : Cleaning up a friend's PC

I'm currently removing viruses from a friend's PC - she had AVG free installed but the viruses got through and corrupted AVG. Loaded AVAST, scanned and removed what it found, mostly "moved to chest" as files couldn't be deleted. Spybot showed continuing Win32.BHO.df in spite of several attempts to remove it, running in safe mode, offline etc. Went onto your forum and found instructions so have done Kaspersky scan and HiJackThis.

I hope someone can help!

Thanks

Claire

Hi Claire, welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You have a load of junk stored in the Spybot S&D Recovery folder, you can empty it:
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

There is more, but this is our major problem:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/wnss.exe-21613.html
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QNE7DT68\skp16[1].exe ------> Backdoor.Win32.Agent.dvq
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnss.exe ------> Backdoor.Win32.Agent.dvq

There is not a lot of information available, but because of the nature of a backdoor trojan, I believe you need to read and consider this information.
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks

Thanks for getting back to me - though I don't much like the look of the news...

I had to give my friend her computer back this morning and yes, she has used it to do some personal banking. As soon as I got your message I rang her and told her she really needs to avoid using it online and advised her to notify her bank of the problem, change passwords etc and ABSOLUTELY not to do any more "confidential" stuff until we are sorted.

Having said that, she has had these viruses for some time, I believe, and so far at least there has been no evidence of any actual use. Possibly because until last week she was on a seldom-used, rather flaky dial-up connection, and I have had the computer since then.

Now, please forgive me but I am a newbie when it comes to this sort of situation, so I'd like to ask some probably very basic questions.

You said:

SO my first question is - If the trojan can be "killed", why is the PC still vulnerable?

How come it is invisible to Avast! when it is actually a running process?

If I were to reformat and reinstall Windows, should I clean the PC first or is that not worth it?

Can these malware programs infect the data files I shall be backing up? Most of her "stuff" is photographs and accounts.

The PC was supplied with OEM Windows - no disk - and knowing my friend she will not have made a recovery set. I presume this means a new copy of Windows?

Sorry not to be solidly decisive about my next step - I need to discuss it with my friend and get her agreement for anything that needs to be done, and will need to give her as much information in the decision-making process as possible.

What would you do? :buried:

Hi Clare, it appears you may not have read the information in the other two links I provided, your questions are answered there. If this was my computer, I would have no choice but to reformat because of my online banking, bill paying, etc.

How come it is invisible to Avast! when it is actually a running process? You would be better to ask Avast that. No one antivirus or security program for that matter is perfect.
There is loads of information about online security:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Online+hackers&btnG=Search

The days of kids causing a litle mischief are gone, it is now about the $$$ and more and more, organized crime worldwide.

Suppost I post this information, it should answer most if your questions:

Dear Phil

Sorry I didn't go into the links you gave me in greater depth - I guess I was just hoping against hope that this would be able to be fixed without such drastic action. Tried to look up the one on wnss.exe and it was talking about removal, but I suppose with the backdoors still there - and still open - this is the only way.

I'll have to call my friend and go through all this with her, obviously, so that's me done for now. I presume if it's a reformatting job, we're on our own now? (Though of course using your very helpful links!).

Many thanks anyway. At least with your prompt help we know where we stand. Keep up the good work.

Claire

Thanks Phil. I'll definitely be studying these and all links you have sent me. I won't be able to do the reformatting until after the weekend though.

Keep well

Claire
