hi
i noticed you have ewido installed:
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:

reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then launch ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido security suite.

reboot back to normal mode, post the ewido report and a log from a fresh hjt scan

Thanks for the reply.

I did the ewido scan, it got rid of four things (including something in l2mfix) but when I asked to save a report all it gave me was this:

ÿþ-

with the odd filename of "Scan report_20060213.txt.txt"

is my copy of ewido corrupted?

anyhow, here is a fresh scan from HJT after the ewido session:

hi

wha language version of windows you have?
it is possible that some of the malware has deleted notepad, can you open other txt files ?

log looks almost clean , but maybe someone of your protection programs was interfereing, as there are odd lines there

Download and Save Blacklight (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml) to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled ewido and logging works fine now... ran another time, but not in safe mode and nothing came up...

the only thing that catches the reg key is spybot s&d

I have Windows 2000 Professional BTW

I'll run blacklight now and post the outcome.

Thanks!
Dimitri

Blacklight said "no items found," but here is the log:

02/14/06 12:57:50 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.30 initialized
02/14/06 12:57:50 [Info]: OS: 5.0 build 2195 (Service Pack 4)
02/14/06 12:57:50 [Note]: 7019 4
02/14/06 12:57:50 [Note]: 7005 0
02/14/06 12:57:57 [Note]: 7006 0
02/14/06 12:57:57 [Note]: 7011 1252
02/14/06 12:57:59 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1014
02/14/06 13:00:46 [Note]: 7007 0

I was thinking that since I don't see anything like "command.exe" in HJT, maybe I should just delete the keys by creating a file in notepad with this info and calling it something like "registryfix.reg":

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\cmdService]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService]

Would this be a dumb idea or could it be all that is left to do?

Thanks
Dimitri

hi

that may be a problem with the permissions for that key.
you can try manually deleting the keys, if it fails you'll need to adjust permissions to give yourself full acces to it

or you can use this:

Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted !!.
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip
Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.
Then restart the PC run spybot check for and fix any problems found.

tell me how it goes

there are some minor items in the hjt log, post a new one after delaing with the service and we will get to it

is spybot still finding it ?

Dimitri
2006-02-14, 23:55
looks like the ren-cmdservice cleared up that key.... a bunch of green items came up but S&D stated

Congratulations!
No Immediate threats were found.

Should I post a fresh HJT log to confirm?

Thanks

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Before starting any cleaning steps, please disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:

Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
Click on "Security Agents Status".
Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
Click the Save button.

Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

You can reenable it once your system is clean.

open hijackthis, checkmark/fix these with all browser and explorer windows closed:

reboot

those should be gone now.
just a minor glitch, not a big one

okay... so I rebooted after doing the above and kicked out a new HJT log... oh yeah, one other question... in my quest to rid this computer of malware, I now have quite a full taskbar, not to mention many activeX files from all those online scanners (bit defender and gang). Is there a core set that I should stick to so that I can maximize my protection, minimize the chance of conflicts, and limit resource and disk space usage? I know this is a lot to ask, but after all these installs, I am confused as to which are worth keeping.

Thanks!
Dimitri

hi

for starters i think ewido is a keeper, the real time guard will expire with the trial, but the scanner will still remain functional :)

other that that you need an antivirus, a firewall maybe one antispyware, whether you want one with real time protection is up to you
prevention is the main factor here as many spyware nasties are extremely hard to remove

here's some more:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
