View Full Version : I can't run Hijack this

Hi, I have been infected with Smitfraud since 30th Jan. I tried both Smitfraud fix and Smitrem but am still getting the pesky pop ups, and my pc is very sluggish. I also installed Kaspersky and thankfully that seem to be doing a good job of blocking a lot of bad things from going in and out so my pc is still usable.
Each time I run Sybot it still detects Smitfraud. It shows that it is in C:\windows\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk and I check the box to delete it but it is still there.
I have been trying to run a Hijack this log, but get runtime error, 50003. Nobody else seems to have a problem providing a HJT log. Please help!

Hello

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before YouPost (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Try downloading HJT by Trendmicro
Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

If you still can't get it to run then do this.

Please download SuperAntiSpyware Free (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE)
Install the program

Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
Check: Perform Complete Scan
Click Next to start the scan.

Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next <-- Important
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click: Preferences
Click the Statistics/Logs tab
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Then this.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Post both reports please and then try installing HJT and post that log also

Hi Ken, thanks for your help, sorry I did not respond but the pc stopped doing anything, Kaspersky kept telling me that a file was infected and it would need to be cleaned off then the pc would restart, and that was happening over and over, not allowing me to do anything.
Fortunately I had a friend on the phone reading through some of this forum's messages, suggested I try Vundofix so I downloaded that in Safe Mode, ran it and let it clean off lots of infected files. Things SEEM to be working OK now and I also managed to iinstall and run Hijack this after reading the FAQ on their web site about error messages that might pop up, so had to install some Windows update, though am still getting a message saying that I need to put in the Windows XP Professional SP 2 cd, which I don't have as it wa preinstalled on this pc, and anyway id the Media Center Edition, so why is it telling me that it is Professional....
SO, I have no idea if this HJT log is good or bad, please take a look and let me know thank you!

Hello,

If Kaspersky is getting in your way while doing the fixes then disable the program , you should be able to right click on the icon in the system tray and shut down or disable it, it will start up next time your reboot.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Most times Vundofix may not get all of it, so run SuperAntiSpyware and then Combofix and post the logs along with a new HJT log please

Thank you for your help. I spoke to a computer boffin locally who said that the best thing would be to do a system recovery as these things are extremely hard to get rid of and will likely leave bits of virus behind however careful I am with the cleaning operation.
I agreed that I would be happier with a completely clean machine, so he has taken it away to do that for me and you can now close my thread.:flowers:

Tricia,

Thanks for letting me know, sometimes with the seriousness of the threats going around a re install of windows is not a bad idea.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
