Hello, Can you please help. When I run Spybot it detects the virus virtumonde. Spybot says it deleted it but the virus keeps coming back after connecting to the internet. I ran the Kaspersky scan and the HJT . The Kaspersky scan log is too long to post but found several problems if you need to see.
Here is the log file from HJT.

Hello madamat :)

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
Expand the "Tools" menu.
Click "Resident".
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

----------------------------------------------- Step 2

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

----------------------------------------------- Step 3

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe).
You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix then post the following reports/logs into your next reply: Combofix.txt A new HijackThis log.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

## Important ##
As we do not know the name of the file that's downloaded, you have to save the file as RC.exe to the root of SystemDrive e.g. C:\RC.exe

STEP #2

Download the latest copy of ComboFix.exe => http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

RecoveryConsole::
C:\RC.EXE

Save this as "CFScript"

Please drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\CF-RC.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

## Important ##
This is a precautionary measure. Please do not reboot the machine until we have reviewed the log & responded to you.

----------------------------------------------- Step 2

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt (ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe) & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows: Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
Back at the main window, click "Custom Scan", then Select drives (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen).
Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Hello RiP ChAiN,

I ran into a problem. I downloaded Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack2 . Saved it in Local Disk [c:] and renamed it RC.exe. I then downloaded newest ComboFix copy. I then copied and pasted text in notebook naming it CFScript. I turned off my security programs and drug CFScript file into ComboFix. Combofix would start up and start to scan but then it prompted me with this error - "C:\RC.exe is not a valid win 32 application " then it said "installation is aborted." I think I saved the windows service pack to the wrong spot. I didn't fully understand
"save file to the root of system drive." I'm sorry

It sounds like you did everything correct here, I wonder if the download managed to get corrupted during the download to your computer. The root of your system drive in this case is C:\ which is where you correctly saved and then renamed the file at. Can you try downloading a new copy of the Service pack to your computer's C:\ drive, renamed it once again to C:\RC.EXE and try running ComboFix again?

Hello madamat :)

That scanner didn't find anything out of the ordinary, and your logs are looking pretty good now. Please post back with a new HijackThis log, and an update on how your computer is running.

My computer runs well when I am offline but when I used Internet Explorer last nite it went blank. It was like I X'd
out of the screen. When I tried to shutdown and restart I got two messages: " ending ccpp" and the next message "ending explorer.exe. " I've been on it all morning to try to repeat it but its been running fine so maybe that was just an internet error.

Thanks again

Hello madamat :)

Those errors I've had before myself, they probably aren't a sign of anything to worry about.

Please delete the following folder:

C:\Qoobox

Congratulations, your computer is now clean of malware!

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
Click "OK".
Click the "More Options" Tab.
Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Hello RiP ChAiN,

Thank you very much for your time and knowledge. I will definitely refer people to SpyBot just as I was referred. My computer is running great and I took your advice to make it more secure. Thanks again
