View Full Version : Virtumonde infection
Hi everybody !
I think I've got a infection by the trojan Virtumonde !! I ran Spybot this morning and it found Virtumonde and Virtumonde.dll, and the repair procedure wasn't able to fix the problem, so I began to search for information ...
So; by now I have :
- updated SpyBot (I had still the 1.4 version, but with regularly updated virus definitions)
- run Spybot and obtained once again the confirmation that Virtumonde is in the place, and Spybot cannot remove it
- run a Kaspersky on-line scan
- installed Combofix and tried to make it work, but all I've got is a message like (I translate it from french as it is my natural language, and my conputer's too !) :
"the instruction to '0x7c9211de' uses the memory adress '0x006d006c'. The memory cannot be 'read'." then I click OK and ComboFix stops ... I guess something's wrong !!
anyway, here is the Kaspersky report :

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Hello Nilsson, you have a very infected computer (multiple infections) and I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. Please do not expect easy or fast. If you have any tools I use, delete them and download them new from the link I provide, read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
I am very concerned about these trojans which appear to be backdoor types:
O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [Windows Printing Driver] WinSpooler.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [WinUpdating] WinUpdating.exe
You may want to read and consider this information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451
Delete your NAV quarantine file of it's contents so we don't have to see those more:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\ <<< that folder in red
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000041213443506
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial
"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\
(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)
3) tutorial if needed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.
Thanks
Thanks for your reply pskelley !
Well, since I posted my first SOS, I tried to manage a little by myself, that is : I read all I could understand on your forum, downloaded ComboFix and ran it once, did a Kaspersky report, updated SpyBot, tried Vundofix ...
and since no alarming reports were produced (not talking about the HiJackThis, I don't get it !), but ComboFix and Vundo seemed to say everything was OK, so I didn't keep my computer offline (furthermore, it's my main professional tool ....)
Anyway; this morning it's beginning to act quite weird (many TeaTimer questions, an IE windows that opens spontaneously, computer quite busy even if I'm not doing anything ...) , so here I am again, to see if I've got an answer to my post !
Anyway, I'll print your list of recomendations and perform the tests and reports you ask for, and I'll be back ASAP !
Thanks a lot !
Nilsson
well, here I am again !
1- I confirm that I've read the "Procedure before Requesting Assistance" !
2- regarding the directory c:\Documents and Setting\All Users\Application Data\Symantec etc ... :
I've deleted it all, as I'd uninstalled Norton a long time ago and don't use it anymore (I rather use Avast nowadays)
I knew Norton is quite tricky to remove, but I hadn't noticed that directory remained
3- Tea Timer disabled, computer restarted
4- I ran Vundofix (v.6.7.8) and it didn't find anything (message "Done searching for file. No infected files were found"). So when I clicked on the "remove" button, it just closed => should I manually remove the Vundofix files (Located in c:\windows\prefetch) ??
Here is the Vundofix report :
*************************************
VundoFix V6.7.8

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's cover this first:
While waiting for the forum to be available again, I ran a thorough Avast scan, and it found 3 infections by Trojan Win32.Pakes-AJM in the following files :
c:\windows\System32\WinPrint.exe
c:\System Volume Information\ ... \A0152204.exe and A0153351.exe ...Confirms the infections, did you have Avast remove this >>> WinPrint.exe
The other infected files are in System Restore and are protected, we will clean those before we finish.

Because of the limited information, I suggest you assume any information on the computer can be compromised, review the information I posted here:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451 have a look at this information also:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
and act accordingly to protect yourself.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart and post a new HJT log, tell me about any malware symptoms.
Thanks
here we go again !
1- the answer to your question about Avast removing the suspect WinPrint.exe is YES, it dit, as for the 2 other files I mentioned in System Volume Information

By the way, is it normal that, running HJT with a "simple" Windows account (i.e. not an "admin" one), HJT didn't produce the same scan list ??
(don't worry, when I noticed that, I logged as an Admin, and then HJT showed me again the list with the 5 items you pointed !).
about malware symptoms :
- this morning, that is before doing all the fixing things you described, when I connected to the Internet (I use Mozilla as a browser), an IE window seemed to open spontaneously, that is I noticed a IE button on the task bar, bearing the name "Gladiatus" (or something like that, I didn't write down the name), so I immediately closed it (rigth-click and Close)
=> I disconnected my computer from the WiFi not to let any access open ..call it paranoia !
- another symptom since Sunday (the beginning of the infection) : my computer is quite slow, it seems always busy, even if I don't work on it, the fan makes a lot of noise, just like when I'm running 4 programs at the same time (and "fat" ones, like InDesign, Photoshop, ...)
- another "curious" thing (but then again, I might be paranoiac !), I have in the right side of the taskbar (don't know the name in English, but it's the place where you see the date and time !) the Windows Security icon (a red shield with a white "X") and it says that my computer is in danger as I've disabled Norton Worm Protection ... it's weird because, as I've said in a previous post, I don't use Norton anymore, and thought I had removed it ...
but it might be nothing serious, what do you think ?
so that's all for now !!
thanks again !

Thanks for returning your information, it is best that all malware removal be done while you are signed in as administrator, but I also like to look at HJT log from each user account to be sure.
the fan makes a lot of noise <<< not malware, I hope you are not loosing a fan. When was the last time you blew all the dust out of fans and cabinet? I'll post some information to help the computer run better before we finish.
Nothing showing in the HJT log: Scan saved at 17:14:22, on 13/02/2008
Have a look at this information to possibly help performance.

I strongly suggest you run a free diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/
Register free and post a link to your Test Results, this may show us something?
Post a new Kaspersky scan results using these setting:
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.
Thanks
I've run the Kaspersky online scan, and here's the logfile :

as you see, we're not done yet ... I know you said it would not be quick and easy ... but it's a bit discouraging ...!
anyway, during the scan, I had an Avast alert about a virus attacking, so I wondered if there was a way to perform this scan without being connected ???
 ooooops, here comes Gladiatus again (the IE windows that pops up spontaneously). I clicked it away quickly, but had time to see it was a kind of commercial for a online game, or MMOPRG ... what it weird is that I'm currently using Mozilla as default browser, not IE ...
about the fan question, I "vacuumed" it 1 or 2 months ago, and it was about time, so I promised myself to do it very soon again, let's say, when that virus crisis is over !
and thanks for the PCpitstop tip (huh, hard to pronounce ! :) ), I'll have a look at that when I'll be ready for the vacuuming !
Nilsson
finally, I didn't wait for the vacuuming day to perform the PCPitstop test, so here's the link :

hope it should be useful !

(make sure these are gone, likely what is causing the problems)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\NTSpool.exe <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinUpdating.exe <<< delete that file
Empty the Recycle Bin on your Desktop.
I am taking a quick look at the Test Results, you should read all of the information.

I would follow these instructions were it me.
• Sub Optimal Internet Performance
• Adjust IE browser cache size
• Auto-filling Forms with Firefox May Present a Security Risk
Let me know how things are running once you delete those two bad files, I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.
Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.

If you are reading this information...thank a teacher,
If you are reading it in English...thank a soldier.
If you clean the dust and the fan continues to act up, I would keep a close eye on it, it may need to be replaced?
OK, the suspected files have been duly deleted, and wastebin emptied !
so I ran once again a HJT on my 2 sessions (both are Admin by now, but I've read it could be harmful to surf on the Web logged as an Admin of the computer, so I created another account, which is a plain user, not admin)

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, I am concerned about these:
user1 (the one I used yesterday for the HJT reports I posted here) :
*******************
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 07:40:02, on 14/02/2008
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1623897008-643792697-4038853474-1004\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\ddccc.dll,#1 (User 'ASUS')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1623897008-643792697-4038853474-1004\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\vtsqo.dll,c (User 'ASUS')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1623897008-643792697-4038853474-1004\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [WinUpdating] WinUpdating.exe (User 'ASUS')
We removed them with HJT in this log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 11:24:08, on 13/02/2008
They were gone in this log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 17:14:22, on 13/02/2008
But are showing in this one:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 07:40:02, on 14/02/2008
and in this log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 07:32:54, on 14/02/2008
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\ddccc.dll,#1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\vtsqo.dll,c
O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [WinUpdating] WinUpdating.exe
Those files are all bad and we must make sure they are gone, make sure viewing all files and folders is enabled:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
then do this:
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\ddccc.dll,#1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\vtsqo.dll,c
O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [WinUpdating] WinUpdating.exe
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\DOCUMENTs & SETTINGS~1\ASUS\LOCALS~1\Temp\ <<< delete everything in that Temp folder (not the folder)
WinUpdating.exe <<< search for this one and delete any instance of it you find.
Let me know that you are successful
Thanks
your question makes me wonder if didn't ended up mixing my identities and reports, so I ran it once again, keeping an eye on the lines you highlighted in the previous reports I posted :
1- User 1 : the one who have the Admin rights
---------------------------------------------
I opened HJT, did a simple System Scan and the 3 items you highlighted (ddccc.dll, vtsqo.dll and WinUpdating.exe)
well, neither HJT nor my search found them ... my search only found a WinUpdating.exe-1BBB97B0.pf file in c:\windows\prefetch => I didn't delete it because it didn't match exactly what you told to look for, should I delete it ?
here's the HJT report :

3- I also did a bit of exploration in the directory C:\Documents and settings\*user*\Local Settings and emptied the Temp and Temporary Internet Files for all the users folders that were there. Everything was OK, except for the "Local Service" user, a file named "index.dat" in the folder \temporay Internet files\Content.IE5\ resisted, and is still resisting the deletion ! I've got a message stating that something is currently using that file so it cannot be deleted ...
4- since this morning, I try to work normally with my computer (sorry, but I've a lot of work to do !), and it seems quite normal, except for a IE window that opens from time to time, with ads, so I close it ASAP ... I've never faced that kind or thing before.
well, hope you'll find something interesting in all these logs in informations, and, by the way, thanks for the links and tips to upgrade and optimize my computer, I'll keep them in store and will apply them as soon as you consider it's safe enough to make a restoration point before changing major parameters !

Yes...malware hackers do hide their junk in Prefetch because must folks do not know it is there. Delete everything in that folder and expect a few slow boots until Windows repopulates it with needed file.
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
1- User 1 : the one who have the Admin rights <<< this one is clean
2- User 2 (the one who hasn't the admin rights) <<< this one is clean
Your #3 there are usually a few old files that will not delete, they are apparantly needed and if you boot to safe mode and delete them, Windows will put them back. Do not be concerned with those, you know what the bad junk looks like by now.
Your #4 popup adds are a part of surfing the web, you can install a popup blocker if you wish. If they are being caused by Vundo you would know it because they constantly happen and the direct you to purchase rouge malware removers like WinFixer.
This is a good popup blocker, but I suggest it with basic installation, there is no need to install all of the junk and eye candy they try to install.
http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_pack_xp.html
What I suggest is that once you clean the Prefetch folder, update your resident antivirus program and run a complete system scan. If you have no issues, then if you have not done so, set a clean System Restore point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx
Then get on about enjoying your computer.
Thanks
I think this infection problem is history now ! ... until maybe the next one, which is likely never to occur, if I follow all the tips you gave me during this "virus hunt"!
anyway, after emptying the Prefetch directory, I ran a complet scan with Avast, and it found nothing,
then I ran also a scan with SpyBot, and for the 1st time since long, it gave me the congratulations of the jury for not having any nasties !!!!
yessssssssssssss !!!
(I hope I'm not too optimistic and that this damn virus is not lurking somewhere in my computer, waiting for a good moment to attack again !)
Anyway, I'd like to thank you very very much for all your help and your advices, I couldn't have managed it by myself, or else maybe causing much collateral damage !
:D:
(should I consider running a last HJT and check if the suspected items didn't re-appear ?)
thanks again :bigthumb::bigthumb::bigthumb: !
Mrs Nilsson
here I am again, with this damn Virtumonde on my computer ...
I noticed weird IE windows that opened spontaneously, even when I wasn't surfing ont the Web; even if my default browser is Mozilla ... Ok, I just closed them ...
but when I ran a Spybot check this morning, just to be sure, it detected Virtumonde again, so I asked SpyBot to fix the problem.
then I ran a HJT, and found again those weird lines like yesterday and the days before, so I checked them and asked HJ to fix the problems
and then I ran a Vundofix, and for the 1st time it detected a lot of infected dll's in my c:\windows\system32 directory, so I asked to remove them, and one of them is resisting, even after a reboot and a new "remove Vundo" operation (the name of this dll is "byxuvtt.dll", though it seems to be a randomly created name which doesn't mean anything ..)
Ok, now after a second reboot, Vundofix has succeeded in deleting this dll...
Right now, I'm running a ComboFix, after a new HJ that didn't mention the usual nasties...
Is my PC so infected that the only option would be to re-format and re-install all ???
I hope not !
 Nilsson, desperate again

Hi Nilsson, if I did not mention it before, let me say not only is Vundo one a the hardest infections to clean from a computer, it is also one of the easiest to get, see this:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/11/07/rogue_antispyware_ads/
It is likely we missed something, post that combofix log when you have if and we will stick wirh this until we are sure you are clean.
Please include a new HJT log running when signed in as Administrator.
I would also like to be sure your version of Spybot is the newest...1.5 and that you are totally updated and immunized at this time.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd15/index.html
Thanks...Phil

Since this morning, I "reopened" my Internet connection and have not yet been bothered by those IE windows opening spontaneously ...
Yesterday, I've tried to clean this mess by myself, checking items to "fix" in HJT, I've also been peeking in the Registry (I know it can be risky, but I was then so desperate about my computer that I took the risk of messing it worse ... and luckily it seems that I've not !)
and there I found a "MS Juan" entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft ... is it bad ?
(my attention was first dragged by a Mr. Enigma entry just above, which is supposed not to be harmful, as I've read on the Net ... but MS Juan seemed suspect to me yesterday, but I just dropped it, because I'm beginning to be fed up with all that crap !!)
are these logs and miscellaneous informations of any use to you ??? let me know if some further investigation is necessary !!

When I translate I get "Other suppressions" does that mean C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxuvtt.dll was deleted? That is likely a Vundo file.
Vundofix was not able to delete the file:
Attempting to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxuvtt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxuvtt.dll Could not be deleted.
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 11:08:40, on 16/02/2008
Use HJT to remove this dead item:
O2 - BHO: {660324c4-c227-92da-dd34-d519dda8e545} - {545e8add-915d-43dd-ad29-722c4c423066} - (no file)
Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens,
copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.
(file to add)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wycioxae.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aiushser.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SFA2B596B.tmp
The registry will get bits and pieces of stuff that is not removed, but they are harmless once the files are gone. It is always important to create a backup prior ro doing anything in the registry. I can provide you with a good free registry cleaner if you wish.
Let's look at another Kaspersky scan, don't post the results if they are clean, just some feedback.
Thanks...Phil
1- the file "byxuvtt.dll" wasn't deleted at first, but I insisted and ran VundoFix until it could manage to get rid of it
2- your translation was correct !
3- I fixed the HJT entry "O2-BHO ...... (no file)" => OK
4- I did the VundoFix trick you asked for (adding 3 files and asking for removal)
5- here's the Kaspersky log, reporting again a Virtumonde infection :

OK, so I've deleted the backup directories you pointed, I've removed VundoFix and ComboFix from my computer
BUT
I cannot get rid of the System Restore Point, even after I've done what you advised for :
turning off the System Restore
rebooting
turning if on again
that damn file keeps reappearing every time I turn the System Restore on again ( and it disappears when it's turned off)
The "display all files, even the hidden ones" is still checked on my computer, so it couldn't be just that (in case you thought of that !)
When I Right-click on this file, it has the property "hidden" which is checked, but it's in gray, so I cannot change it (even when I'm logged in as an Admin)
when I try to delete it, the system returns me the following message (approximatively, I translate it from French) :
"impossible to delete change.log : this resource in used by another person or another program. Close the programs that are likely to use this file and try again"
an idea ???!!!!
thanks !

Thanks
everything seems fine now, the restore point file presumed to contain the virus doesn't bother anymore the Kaspersky OnLine Scan, which returned this morning a "OK, evrything's fine" message,
Avast did the same
SpyBot also ....
wow ! I was very close to give up the cleaning process, and was preparing my checklist before re-installing everything !!
so instead of spending my (second) sunday on the computer, I went skiing !!! (guess that seems very strange form a Floridian point of view !!)
thanks again a lot for all your help:)I think I've learned a bit about security and am now aware of the dangers of Internet, and the ways of staying clear from them !!

Thanks for the feedback, used to do a little skiing myself a few years back. Don't seem to run into enough snow here though:santa:
