Firstly i would like to ask if a moderator could lock or delete my last thread as it contains the wrong information (Wrong HJT Log), which is located here:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=24050

My problem still is the same, A couple of days ago my Windows Defender detected a settings modifier on the system but was unable to quarantine it, and keeps picking it up again and again everytime it does it's routine scan, i also did a scan with AVG as well and that detected it as well but all it asked me to do was either to confirm the changes or tell it to ignore it, this is the bit which seems to be affected: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then after doing the kaspersky scan i can also see i got some viruses of which im unaware of and no of my antivrus software has picked up on, so if someone could please help!!!

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but with the ATF Cleaner instructions, do i also select prefetch to clean, because the topic creator did rcommend against it if your compuer has spyware :red:......(by the way you didnt mention what the problem is with my computer, is it spyware, a virus.....something worse....)i'll await your reply before i follow the ATF Cleaner Intructions and on if i should clean the prefetch :red:.... also just something i noted when removed the old java, and downloaded the latest version, i can barely get my IE working and has started to take a while to load, also i cant open more then one tab on my IE now...

Thank you for the clarification :red:
I have used the cleaner but as i mentioned in the post prior to the last one even after using the cleaner i can barely get my IE working and it is still starts to take a while to load, (i cant open more then one tab on my IE now again :red:), also when i do access the internet my CPU usage will go to 100% until the IE finishes loading my home page, which it didnt used to do.....btw is their a certain type of behaviour i should be looking out for?

Here's my fresh HJT Log after reboot:

bafter using the cleaner i can barely get my IE working and it is still starts to take a while to load, (i cant open more then one tab on my IE now again :red:), also when i do access the internet my CPU usage will go to 100% until the IE finishes loading my home page, which it didnt used to do..

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exeb
c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe

Looks like you have 2 anti-virus software programs running you will need to remove one of them. This is causing your high CPU usage

Reboot and rescan with HiJackThis when done and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hiya, regarding your advice i did actually make a topic in the tavern about this, and to be completely honest i dont want to get rid of norton antivirus, the main reason being that i like the fact i can block IP's that have attempted to hack on my computer by actually being able to put the the IP's in the restricted zone, which i dont think AVG Antivirus offers in its free version, i also like the fact the norton actually asks me if i want the Active X's to be permitted or not on certain pages which i think is a very handy feature, whereas once again AVG does not do.
In that thread i was advised to ditch norton but as i said there
... I have to be honest its the outdated version from 2005 that i have, and the 12 months free updates are obviously up, but as i said i really like the features it offers for free, the Active X prompts, the IP blocking (the personal firewall), it updates the intusion signatures for free as well, and the live update, the only problem is the actual antivirus capability, obviously i couldnt afford the the updates after the free 12 months continously, so it is behind in its definitions, but to me the features outweigh the vices, and thats why im asking....???

So what do you think i should do???

little eagle
2008-02-20, 02:09
Norton is the worst. IMHO not spybots

You can use spywareblaster to stop the Active X.
Use a host file and no of them will slow you PC down.

shandyleer
2008-02-20, 14:41
Ok well then ill follow your advice and uninstall Norton :red:
I just dont know what you mean by the following comment (If you could just explain it please, im not that good on the technical stuff of this...)
...Use a host file and no of them will slow you PC down.
Sorry if im being such a nuisance, i just want to make sure everything works right.....:red:
And sorry i know ive asked this question before....and im sounding like a realy paranoid and probably annoying individual but you still havent told me what was wrong with my computer...???:red:

Here are a few programs that will help you.
They do not run in the back ground.
Let me know what you do not understand.

Block Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)

Prevent the installation of spyware SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)

Restrict crapware pushers inside Internet Explorer with IE-SPYAD (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm)

Hiya sorry to bother you again, just before we carry on with the fix, i just wanted to run something by you regarding something that i mentioned when i started this thread, it was about a settings modifier which was and still is found repeatedly by my Windows Defender, now what i didnt notice was windows defender actually gave a link to this site: http://www.microsoft.com/security/encyclopedia/details.aspx?name=SettingsModifier%3aWin32%2fPossibleHostsFileHijack&threatid=1758608427027806866

And here it gives a (what looks like a simple) solution to the hosts problem:

How to Recover from Infection
Manual Recovery

To recover manually from Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack, you can manually recreate a clean HOSTS file, or you can restore a version of the HOSTS file from a backup you made before the file was modified without your consent.

To recreate a clean HOSTS file manually:
Click Start, and click Run.
If your computer is running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME:
In the Open field, type: notepad %windir%\hosts
If your computer is running a Windows NT-based operating system, such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
In the Open field, type: notepad<system folder>\drivers\etc\hosts
-- for example, on Windows 2000:
In the Open field, type: notepad C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
-- or on Windows XP:
In the Open field, type: notepad C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Delete all text in the HOSTS file.
On the first line of the HOSTS file, type: 127.0.0.1 localhost
At this point the HOSTS file contains nothing but this one line of text.
Save the file to the same location you opened it from.
Close Notepad.

This information does seem similar to the information that you gave via the link which you gave me, and i just wanted to run this by you, and see if you think i should use this to resolve my problem?

And easy-er way would be to Download the HostsXpert 3.8 (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip)- Hosts File Manager.

* Unzip HostsXpert 3.8 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
* Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.8 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
* Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
* Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
* Click the X to exit the program.
* Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

I've just attempted to use the HostsXpert like you said but i got the following message

ERROR cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts

What shall i do now???

Hi, i was just going to uninstall Norton, when i thought i should first install SpywareBlaster onto my system, so i downloaded the program and then i intalled it, after its tutorial i clicked on the Enable all Protection button, and then my my Spysweeper shield informed me that spywareblaster was changing my IE settings to something called 0900 dialer.com, so i just got really scared :red: and got spysweeper to prevent from the change from occuring and then i uninstalled it.....why would it change my IE settings to a dialer....????

May have been putting it into the restricted site on IE.

The program has been used by many for prevention it is safe. ;)

Thank you for once again clarifying another thing for me, and i just wanted to ask one (i totally promise this will be the last question i ask :lip:) final question before we carry on with the fix :red:, as i mentioned before My Norton actually blocks IP's which have repeatedly tried to attack my computer, it actually blocked them from having any contact with my computer whatsoever which was really good, and because i was attacked repeatedley by the same IP's i thought they must be targetting me for whatever reason......so i was wondering if you could recommend any good IP Blocking Software available on the net, i would look myself, and i have, but i also know (thanks to you guys :bigthumb:) that some of these can be fraudulent and full of spyware websites and software, who are waiting for stupid people like to try and download it :red:, so i was wondering if you would be so kind to recommend or find one for me plz?

Thank you so much for your help, and hopefully this should be the last day of questions, lol, but just one final (i know i said the last was last time, but you offered :red:) question, so before i get rid of anything i just want your approval for what im going to do with my defence, So

1. Uninstall Norton
2. Keep AVG
2. Uninstall ZoneAlarm
3. Install SpywareBlaster
4. Install COMODO Firewall
5. Install SpywareGuard (I still don't understand what this program does.....any help????)
6. Install the IE Spyad (I apologise for the spelling, btw i still dont understand this either, but im sure you'll explain after we solve the hosts problem :red:)

Is there any personal recommendations that you may have in regards to Antivirus or Antispyware software or firewalls?

little eagle
2008-02-23, 15:35
1. Uninstall Norton YES
2. Keep AVG YES
2. Uninstall ZoneAlarm YES
3. Install SpywareBlaster YES
4. Install COMODO Firewall YES
5. Install SpywareGuard (I still don't understand what this program does.....any help????) It alerts you when changes are made to the registry
6. Install the IE Spyad (I apologise for the spelling, btw i still dont understand this either, but im sure you'll explain after we solve the hosts problem :red:)

IE-SPYAD contains a set of Internet Explorer "Restricted sites" lists for use with ZonedOut, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility available from FunkyToad:

http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/

This Restricted sites list is the same as the older "original" IE-SPYAD. The ZonedOut utility from FunkyToad simply automates the process of loading the IE-SPYAD sites list into Internet Explorer's Restricted sites zone, much like the batch file installer in the "original" IE-SPYAD.

Is there any personal recommendations that you may have in regards to Antivirus or Antispyware software or firewalls? Here is a list of tools (http://www.nutnworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98)that I use.

Also just for your reference when i installed COMODO Firewall, it did it's scan on the instillation and found the following: Unknown Malware (Dirty)(ID = 0x4edaf) C:\WINDOWS\_MSRSTRT.EXE
Which i clicked to delete, was that a right action to take?

Yes I think that you were right.

What other trouble are you having?
Not seeing anything wrong.

Lol, of course i can, thats ok, considering the amount of stuff ive asked you to do, lol, and im only one person, id be happy to recap for you :red:

A couple of days ago my Windows Defender detected a settings modifier on the system but was unable to quarantine it, and keeps picking it up again and again everytime it does it's routine scan, i also did a scan with AVG as well and that detected it as well but all it asked me to do was either to confirm the changes or tell it to ignore it, this is the bit which seems to be affected: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

And this problem is still persistent, my windows defender is still picking this up with every scan, despite me quarantining it everytime as well, even after the fix

Before you asked me to use HostsXpert to restore the original, but i was unable to do so because i kept getting this following message

ERROR cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts

So are you still up to help me???? :red:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

I would like to see a copy of the file in bold.

Click start / then my computer / local disk then follow the process tree.

Right click on the file and select Send To and Compressed (zipped) Folder.
This makes a copy it does not delete it.
Please zip the file and upload it here (http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=270)
Or email it here (little_eagle@security-central.us)

Please include a link to this thread.

So are you still up to help me???? yes this is so much fun :)

Host file is clean.

Lets try this scan.
Click HERE (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm) to run Panda's ActiveScan

* You need to use IE to run this scan
* Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
* A new window will open...click the Check Now button
* Enter your Country
* Enter your State/Province
* Enter your e-mail address and click send
* Select either Home User or Company
* Click the big Scan Now button
* If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
* It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
* When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
* When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
