Hello,

When I immunize (I have the latest version of SB) everything is fine except there remain unprotected items (7,907) in the Global Hosts File. I have been instructed to uninstall SB, make sure all files are deleted, then install again. Sill this file remains unprotected. I have also unchecked everything but that file, clicked "undo" then immunized again. It still does not work.
Any suggestions as to how I can get this file immunized???
Thanks!
:)

Hello,

So with the latest Spybot version you mean version 1.5.2?

Some users have reported that they use SpySweeper or SpywareBlaster and shutting them down solves the problem. ZoneAlarm might also block the global hosts. If you go to Firewall in ZoneAlarm on the left and then the main tab in the upper right then go down to the advance button and click on it you will see under General setting "Lock Hosts file".

Further please try the following:
Open Spybot > Immunize > under Windows uncheck Global (Hosts). Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Hosts file > and then click on the "Add Spybot S&D hosts list" button. Go back into Spybot > Immunize
The problem that not all global host entries have been immunized has also been discussed in our forum:

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.
I had already disabled Zone Alarm and that did not help.
I followed the other directions, looked at the Hosts file and it showed nothing. I clicked "Add SpyBot", the blue line moved at the bottom, but nothing appeared. I immunized but got the same result with those 7903 unprotected in that file.
I had another problem a number of months ago, not with SpyBot, and the moderator on another forum had me change the Hosts file, he sent a new one and had me delete the old one. Since I have had this problem with SpyBot, I have wondered if the problem is with the Hosts file and NOT SpyBot. What do you think????

Patz2:

If you think that the problem may be with the HOSTS file itself, you can replace the HOSTS file with the Microsoft default file and then attempt to add Spybot's HOSTS file.

To replace your HOSTS file with Microsoft default HOSTS file:
Download HostsXpert from the following site:
Funkytoad.com -fast, functional and free - Home
http://www.funkytoad.com/
The page for HostsXpert is:
Funkytoad.com -fast, functional and free - HostsXpert v4.1
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/13/31/
The direct download URL for HostsXpert.zip is:
Click Here to download HostsXpert (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip)
After downloading HostsXpert.zip, unzip (extract) the content of the file into a known location.
Execute HostsXpert.
If the first button in the left hand pane is "Make Writeable?", click on the button.
Click on the "Restore MS Hosts File" button.
When you receive the following confirmation dialog click "OK".
Confirm
Press OK to Restore Microsofts original Hosts File
[OK] [Cancel]
Add Spybot's Hosts file as follows:
Go into Spybot > Immunize.
Right click on the right hand pane and select "Deselect all".
Scroll down to the bottom of the right hand pane and under Windows check "Global (Hosts)".
Click the "Immunize" button at the top of the right pane (the button with large green plus sign)?

--- or ---

Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Hosts file > Click the "Add Spybot S&D hosts list" button (at the top).

Thank you for your reply, I have printed it and will follow those directions AFTER I find out if it is safe for me to replace my Hosts File.

You're entirely welcome.

Apparently the file that "… the moderator on another forum …" sent you or the implementation of that file caused problems when trying to add Spybot's Hosts file.

I'm glad you were able to get your problem resolved.

Immunize showed 1260 Global Host unprotected under windows.
After reading this thread I started Zone Alarm(as I was in safe mode)
and navagated to the Firewall link on the left then the Advanced button
on the bottom-right, I removed the check from "Lock Host File".
Ran the Immunize again and now have (0) unprected. I put back the check in zone alarm

Thank you spybotSandra of Team Spybot:thanks:
