Hello, my problem is with Win32.Agent.pz, a malware that creates a directory named "wsnpoem" in the system folder, installs library files, and runs in the background.

I followed the step-by-step instructions in the "Before You Post" thread, so I only attempted to get rid of it using Spybot after I scanned using Kaspersky. But unfortunately it's still here. :( Someone please help me. Thank you so much in advance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this is a backdoor trojan that steals your information:
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-040208-5335-99&tabid=2
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojagentecu.html

Allows others to access the computer
Steals information
Downloads code from the internet
Installs itself in the Registry
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

OMG, my heart is pounding. But wait, a few developments have taken place recently.

First, AVG has now detected the malware. It isolated the file responsible for its persistence, ntos.exe. Because of this, I was able to use Spybot to get rid of Win32.Agent.pz.

Ever since, Kaspersky and Spybot have been reporting 0 infections. AVG reports no infections too, but reports this:

Object: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Result: Change
Status: Changed

I don't know what that means. It's not an infection, but it shows up on the "Virus results" tab.

Now I have three important questions:
(1) Are Win32.Agent.pz and ntos.exe really gone? Can I really believe Kaspersky, AVG, and Spybot?

(2) By Spybot fixing it, does that mean the changes made to my PC were reversed?

(3) How do I know that information has been taken from my PC? (It didn't install any other trojans, by the way.) What are the chances it didn't take anything at all?

It really worries me, but I can't just format everything and start over. :( Don't IPs change from time to time? And it might be gone now anyway.

Anyway, thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it. I hope to hear from you again soon.

Thanks for returning your feedback. I understand the concern for your computer. Did you read the information I posted:
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted...
The trogan is removed by us all of the time, but because of what it does, I believed you needed to know this information to help make your decision. Please take the time to read the information again, especially the information in the links. Here is information information about doing a reformat:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/

This: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
is your hosts file, AVG is letting you know a change occured. Here is information about the hosts file:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial51.html

To answer your three questions to the best of my ability:

1) If Kaspersky, AVG and Spybot report a clean computer, chances are the trojan is gone. I would like to see a new HJT log however.

2) Spybot is a great freeware tool and it can remove malware but there is no guarantee any tool can completely fix what the trojan may have done.

3) I would personally assume any information on the computer to be compromised and take no chances, that is the reason I posted the links telling you how to protect yourself. These hackers are looking for ways to turn information into $$$. I suggest you follow these directions: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451 and do what they say to protect yourself, once I have a look at the HJT log, then change all password especially those to secure areas.

Thanks

I have read some of the pages you posted. It's really disturbing. But I came across this on Symantec's website...

The Trojan deletes cookies in the Internet Explorer URL cache so that users will have to re-insert passwords when logging into banking Web sites.

During the time I was infected, I made sure to keep surfing to a minimum, logging into my e-mail account only. So with that I have a new set of questions:

(1) Doesn't that mean that I could just change my passwords so the hacker can't access my account?

(2) Now that the malware has been removed, it can't steal information anymore, right? (TeaTimer is running.) Because from what I understand, the malware needs those files I deleted if it wants to gather data, and now that they're gone, I was thinking that it can't gather and send data anymore.

Sorry for being quite stubborn about reformatting. But with two users, multimedia, programs, drivers, documents, and settings all in place, it's quite overwhelming. I do, however, understand your point.

It's just that I don't use my PC to access banking information so I'm hoping that the hacker--if one did peek--would find things useless. I will take action with regard to my credit card though, because I entered credit card information on Amazon.com more than a month ago and I'm not sure if I deleted the cookie.

I know other people got infected by Win32.Agent.pz as well. Do you know what happened to their situations? Just wondering.

Well, here is my latest HJT log; maybe you can tell if it's gone? Again, thank you so much for your time and concern.

Thanks for returning your HJT log, as far as I can see the log is clean.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\ <<< appears your Java Program is out of date, I suggest you download the newest version and uninstall any old versions in add remove programs.

I can not make your decisions for you, and I believe I have provided enough information for you to make them, if not Google for more information, there is plenty online.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Thanks for looking through my log. Later when I get home I will update Java and study those pages you gave me more closely. Thanks. :)

I scanned them though, and I was looking for answers to my two previous questions:

Quote:

Hmm, I couldn't find the answers. Would you mind advising me on this? :) I really appreciate all your help. Thanks.

One of the reasons we provide the information with these backdoor trojans is because we don't know what damage a hacker can do once they have had that kind of access. You may never have an issue, I for one can not guarantee that.

I'm sorry to bother you again, but I have this new concern. Today I decided to do a full scan of my computer just to make absolutely sure:

Spybot (updated) found no infections.
Kaspersky (updated) found no infections.

Then I decided to use AVG Anti-Spyware for the first time. Apart from cookies, it found this infection...

Threat: Logger.Zbot.np
2 traces detected in the following locations:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{081A11A6-5191-42C6-B813-16EE6DF94A62}\RP97\A0011695.exe
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{081A11A6-5191-42C6-B813-16EE6DF94A62}\RP98\A0011840.exe

Soon, AVG Anti-Virus detects trojan horse Pakes_c.LS in the same locations (C:\System Volume Information\_restore...A0011695.exe and C:\System Volume Information\_restore...A0011840.exe).

» Now I'm speculating that they are not active because they're not loose in system folders or registry entries. This malware was detected because Windows included it in a system restore point, am I right? So can I just quarantine or delete them and not worry?

I'm also speculating Logger.Zbot.np is AVG's alias for Win32.Agent.pz. (I did a Google search on it and no helpful links showed up.) As for Pakes_c.LS, my Google search linked it to ntos.exe, that file I had back when I was infected with Win32.Agent.pz.

Here is my latest HJT log. Thank you so much, pskelley.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\ <<< appears your Java Program is out of date, I suggest you download the newest version and uninstall any old versions in add remove programs.
Java is still out of date in the latest HJT log. Here is how easy that can get you infected.

Those are infected System Restore files, follow the instructions I posted earlier to clean those files.

Thanks

Java update done; it's now Version 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_03-b05).

I have gotten rid of the infected system restore files, and according to Spybot, Kapersky, AVG Anti-Spyware, and AVG Anti-Virus, my computer is now free of malware.

Thanks for everything! :)
