View Full Version : Spyware, crashes, and virus trouble

For the last couple of days, my computer has been acting erratically. Not long after rebooting, it would suddenly crash or something, with both the desktop and the taskbar disappearing (the IE windows remaning accessible via alt+tab), and now and then I get "buffer overflow" errors as well. I tried running Spybot and AVG, which seemed to find some things, but didn't fix the problem. I should perhaps also note that after running VundoFix.exe some stuff was found, but the program couldn't remove "ddcdaby.dll", even after repeated reboots, and repeated attempts. Hope you folks can help. :)

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
When you talk about "errors" I can not research them unless I have them "word for word" just as Windows sends them.
Thanks for the feedback, I see no evidence of Vundo, but it does hide and we will have to check for it. I need some help, I can not identify this item:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_kev.dllThat is about the only thing I question in the HJT log, use one or more of these free scans to find out what that is if you do not know.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
Please post the results. You will need to have files and folder unhidden:

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Monday, February 18, 2008 12:35:42 PM
C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan Styles\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\ <<< delete the contents of that quarantine folder
This one may or may not be bad, Kaspersky does not like it. Scan the file in red and delete it if it scans bad
C:\mIRC\mirc32.exe ------> Client-IRC.Win32.mIRC.582 skipped
There is one infected System Restore file, we will clean that before we finish.
If you have Vundofix, please delete it and download it new from the link I provide.
Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial
"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\
Post the Vundofix.txt and a new HJT log and the information I requested, add any comments you think will help.
Thanks
Octavian

Thank you for the reply. I did read that thread, yes.
Well, the one error I can specifically point to is the "Buffer overrun detected! Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe" error. Clicking "OK" seems to make the task bar and desktop disappear, and I pretty much have to reboot. Also AVG has been repeatedly complaining about how "Virus Lop" has been found...
Strangely enough, when I tried to use one of those free scans on "win_kev.dll", I couldn't find the file... I did follow those instructions and had files and folder unhidden, but it wasn't there.
I deleted the quarantine folder. It seems "mirc32.exe" was a nasty as well, so I deleted it too. Downloaded and ran VundoFix from the desktop; it seems VundoFix couldn't delete "ddcdaby.dll" again, even after a reboot. Here are the VundoFix and HijackThis logs:

Are you sure you followed the directions to unhide all files and folders?
So you could not find that file to scan it, can I assume you have no idea why it is on your computer. I'd like to know what something is before I ask you to delete it.
VundoFix V4.2.69 <<< if you have an old version of Vundofix on your computer please delete it and use only the new version I provided a link to.
see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is BADLY out of date and likely the reason you are infected. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
I would prefer we know what this is before we delete it, understand there is no information at Google and you will be removing it at your own risk.
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_kev.dll
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens,
copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.
(files to add)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcdaby.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_kev.dll
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {003809C6-E8BC-490A-8579-3EC483407335} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmm.dll (file missing)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_kev.dll
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
5) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
(make sure the files in red are gone)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcdaby.dll

I did follow your instructions exactly, made all files visible, and I still can't find that win_kev.dll... No, no idea what it is.
Something seems wrong though, you say that I should use VundoFix V4.2.69? But the linked version, or at least the one that gets downloaded to the desktop, is V6.7.8? I tried running it again and the same thing happened: it couldn't remove ddcdaby.dll, so it wanted to reboot and remove it. However, after the reboot, it still couldn't remove the file.
I uninstalled the old version of Java, and downloaded the newest version (didn't install it yet).
Downloaded ATF Cleaner to the desktop.
I ran HijackThis, and well, weirdly enough, none of the boxes you say to check are there, except for O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_kev.dll ! No clue what's going on here... Didn't run ATF Cleaner yet, because of all this strangeness. What should I do now?
Oh, and there are two files in my C: drive now, one called "hiberfil.sys" and "pagefile.sys", both combined are almost 2.5 GB. Is that relevant to what's going on?
Here another HijackThis log:

Something seems wrong though, you say that I should use VundoFix V4.2.69? No...I said to delete all old versions and use the newest version in the link I provided. The Vundofix scan indicated you either scanned with that version before or had it still onboard?
I uninstalled the old version of Java, and downloaded the newest version (didn't install it yet).
Install it whenever you can.
Oh, and there are two files in my C: drive now, one called "hiberfil.sys" and "pagefile.sys", both combined are almost 2.5 GB. Is that relevant to what's going on?Read this, I would leave those alone:
http://www.cknow.com/faqs/What/HIBERFIL.SYSandPAGEFIL.SY.html
http://www.theeldergeek.com/paging_file.htm <<< tutorial
Your HJT log is clean except for this item:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_kev.dll
Use Search Companion: Make sure all files and folder are enabled:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Start > Search > All Files and Folder > Search for win_kev.dll
Make sure you allow some time, there are a lot of files to search through, that file is there somewhere. Once Search Companion locates it, please upload a copy of that file to here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
Make sure to post a link to our topic and provide information so they can contact you with their finding.
Once you get the location, use also use the scanners I posted earlier to scan the file and post the results.
Besides this file, which we are not 100% is even bad, the HJT log is clean.
Run a new Kaspersky Online Scan and use these settings:
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.
Thanks

Looking at the log file, it seems like part of it was from a scan done back in 2006... weird. Anyway, I definetely have the latest version now, if that is v6.7.8.
Hmm, I'll leave those files alone then.
Wouldn't you know it, after I restarted my computer and ran HijackThis again, I found all those entries you had mentioned before! So I followed your instructions from the previous post. Unfortunately, I never could find that accursed win_kev.dll file (by either looking in the system32 directory, or by running a search for it). I did indeed select Show hidden files and folders, and unchecked Hide file extensions for known file types and hide protected operating system files, and hit yes to confirm. Still couldn't find that durn thing...
I think things might be better now, not sure... Here is the latest HJT log:

Also ran ATF-Cleaner and got back 550MB of hard drive space, which was nice.
I will run Kaspersky tonight, and post the log up here tomorrow.

Thanks for returning your information, this HJT scan:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 8:25:15 PM, on 2/20/2008 is no longer showing win_kev.dll, but some other junk needs to be cleaned. Are you running Spybot TeaTimer at all on the computer? These leftovers look like stuff from the TT memory. It could also be CounterSpy not allowing removal of these items, turn it off when you perform these next instructions.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(first three are optional, is you use those, you may leave them)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
(understand that none of those items are active malware, just debris, but something is blocking us from cleaning it from the registry. Usually, this is TeaTimer, all I see in your log is CounterSpy)
Post a clean log for me to view and the follow these directions:

Followed your instructions on the System Restore file. Thanks for the links, I bet they will help in the future. So, well, maybe we've won the battle against the spyware? :)

Thanks for returning that information and the feedback. The HJT log looks good and I do believe we have won another small battle, but the war goes on.
