View Full Version : Xpre.exe and xrun.exe
Hi all
Can someone help me with the above pease. I was browing last week when all of a sudden zonealarm told me the above programmes want to access the net. I obviously denied access not knowing what they were and googled them which is how I have ended up here. I think I have stopped there payload as various spyware programs dont pick anything up, but do I need to do anything help. Below is my HJT log.

Since You appear to have not read the directions, I am not sure what else we will run into. I can tell you this looking at the out of date HJT log.
1) See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03 <<< Your Java program is BADLY out of date and likely whi you are infeced. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
2) You have more junk to clean, but the trojans are our worry.
3) Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.
4) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Can you describe any malware symptoms you are having.
You have AVG Anti-Spyware onboard: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\
Make sure it is updated and run a system scan. Make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything located and be sure to save the scan report to post.

I have run AVG Spyware and all it found was cookies. It didnt give me a report so I cant post it.
The only symtoms I have had are when I visited a website zone alarm told me Xpre.exe and xrun.exe were trying to access the internet. I denied them and then there was a lot of disk activity.
What can I do now?

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Are you sure Zone Alarm is not blocking this stuff from coming in, not the other way around? Prevx says it removes the junk, but first let try a good cleaning.
You can remove combofix from your computer.
This is what I would like you to do:
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
5) Run ATF Cleaner: Make sure to clean according to the instructions

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer
Make sure all files and folders are visable using these instructions:

Now I want you to use Search Companion:
Start > Search > All files and folder > Search. Search for these files: Xpre.exe and xrun.exe
You can not rush the search, there are a lot of files to search through. If Search Companion finds either file, post to tell me where they are located.

I've done as you asked and serch has not found the files. They are definately listed in Zone Alarm as attempting to access the internet. I will set them in the program list to 'ask' when accessing the net to see of they try again. Zone alarm lists them as C:\Documents and Settings\Name\. Do I have anything tyo worry about?

I want you to understand that the hackers do not play by rules, they put their junk anywhere they want to put it, and I can not locate it for you. If Zone Alarm told you where they are, go there and delete them.
If you can not do that, try Free Prevx, they say they can remove it for you.

If I knew what to believe I wouldnt be here. I thought that is what this forum was for. I'm sorry if I have p'ed you off in some wy but I really am not an expert in all this and am just turning to people who are. Not zone alarm says they are there, serch dosnt, I have looked and cant see them but surely ZA didnt make it up.

Zone alarm tells you the pathway to the bad files, I have no idea how ZA knows and Search Campanion, which is a Windows Tool does not.
I am here to help, but I can not do it for you. If you think I would post a link to a product ( http://free.prevx.com ) that can not be trusted, then perhaps we are both wasting our time.

That is all PrevX found. I cant understand how zonealarm blooked something that isnt there! Any ideas? Its clear that the .exe files dont appear there anymore so is there anything else I can do to ensure I am safe?

We have run a lot of tools that find nothing, I personally can not say unless I personally follow this pathway:
C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\Local Settings\Temp\xpre.exe
with my own eyes to see what is in the temp folder, and this is not going to happen. We ran this tool:

and I asked that you follow the directions which would have cleaned that folder (all users temp) if you followed directions. If the hackers are running those .exe files from Prefetch, the instructions would also have cleaned those.
I can only suggest you make sure this is the case. If Search Companion does not find the files, then I can assume they are probably not there. The only other advice I can give you would be to see if this forum can help:

Sorry to post again so quick but I have just visited a website I use alot and is trusted. However AVG Antoi Virus Resident Shield detected the following "Virus Found HTML/Framer on C:\documents and settings\tom\local settings\temporary internet files\content.IE5\OV4NJ7A5\sh[1].htm. I sent it to the vault.
It also found JS/Downloader.Agent in the same folder which I sent to the vault.
What is this? A Java applet then tried to run which I stopped. Am I noticing this because of the new version of java I downloaded.
