I'm glad to know I probably wasn't imagining things, then. He must have decided on flight instead of fight.
I saw a skunk a while back when I was visiting somebody. He/she marched across the parking lot and disappeared into the rocks in the rock wall by the bank as bold as brass. I'm not sure what one was doing in town.
I guess skunks stamp their front feet to warn you if they feel threatened before they spray, which I've never seen but sounds absolutely adorable. :)

Juliet
2023-03-12, 16:01
Don't know about stomping their feet I just know don't stand behind them.
We've had one in the past take up home under our deck, could not go outside for quite some time afterwards, had to hold our nose.

I don't know whatever happened to the skunk but we have seen a ground hog in the back yard.......pretty sure they don't have a pleasant smell either.

Zenobia
2023-03-14, 23:01
Quebec had a sad groundhog day this year when they found out their groundhog Fred la marmotte had passed away.
I'm not sure if groundhogs smell or not. We were the (very reluctant!) host of a mama raccoon and a guesstimated 4 to 6 raccoon babies in our shed a year or so back, and they didn't smell real fresh or spring-like I'll tell you that.
I discovered a very very (very!) large raccoon in the shed when I went to get my paint brush in there. My husband was gone away for a week or so.
After some research into humane evictions and discovering that raccoons are great mothers, but there was a small chance she might abandon them if evicted, I let her remain in the shed. I was very careful not to engage with her or them so they wouldn't become human friendly.

Fun fact: Having this kind of conversation...."Screeeam -What are you doing in my shed!??! You can't stay in there. Are you pregnant!?! You can't stay and have babies in there. Shoo! Shoo!" is apparently not a very good raccoon deterrent.

Juliet
2023-03-15, 16:42
Oh my gosh, didn't they do checks on Fred la marmotte?
LOL

I'm thinking, someone screaming at me would probably make me get the heck out of dodge.

Walking into the garage one summer day I just happened to look up, still don't know why I did that but, I saw a support beam or whatever and saw a hornets nest just above my head that I had not seen before.
Wasn't a small nest so I have no clue why I had never before but..........gave me shivers to think that thing could had fell on me and then I would had been in a world of hurt!

Zenobia
2023-03-15, 23:59
I guess they must not have except for the day before groundhogs day they checked his burrow. I'm not sure if he died of old age or something else , the poor thing.
Not sure what that means for spring coming, lol!

Yikes! That's scary.
I once sprayed a hornet's nest out of the barbecue with a hose. Probably not the safest endeavor or my smartest moment, but I was unscathed, hehe!

Zenobia
2023-03-17, 05:09
They seem to like the barbecues for some reason. I've had a hornet's nest in two different ones.
I don't mind spiders too much. Somebody online posted a video of spiders crawling through the snow the other day, which I thought was a bit weird, but I dunno, maybe spiders do that and I just didn't know about it.

Juliet

I would think they like tropical environments better.

Zenobia

Zenobia

Zenobia
2023-06-23, 03:26
I think my uncle taught me to punch properly. He had to re-teach me to make a fist because I used to put my thumb on the inside of the palm of my hand, and he had to show me to tuck it under my fingers. I used to find I punched harder with it under my other fingers, but he used to explain that I could break my thumb that way. I think I had the clown and he had a punching bag, lol.

Juliet

When we fought, which was wrong I agree but, when you got that many kids it's going to happen.

Grasp...
I only did this a couple times, and I had to be really, really mad to do it, but a couple times I'd grab the person's hair and pull their head down, then flip them over with it. If somebody would have asked me to demonstrate I couldn't have to save my soul, because I had to be in a complete rage to do it. Nobody was ever badly hurt by it, and they always seemed completely surprised...one minute they'd be getting ready to deck me one, and the next, smoosh, on the ground they go. lol! :red:

My older sister got me bent over once, popped me right in the eye, I noticed an umbrella on the floor and come up swinging with it. Got her a good one across the head with it.
My eye felt funny, didn't know what it was so I looked in the mirror, it was swelling.
Was blackened by that afternoon and mother made me go to school everyday with a black eye cause she was mad.
Little did she know that walking in the hall in between classes, people would say 'Hey, what's the other guy look like?, turned out to be funny.

Zenobia
2023-08-01, 03:07
Now that's some extremely bad timing! We have an ancient window air conditioner that did some sort of really weird thing where it went through all it's numbers. It went from 00 up to 99, then ran through turning everything on, it changed Fahrenheit/Celsius several times, even set it's own Economy button. I wasn't sure if it needed a repairman or an exorcist to be honest. Then it just started working again. I don't know if it was a self-test, or what it was. But since it's working now I just left it alone(but I only have it on when I'm home and don't set a timer or anything, because that was weird.)

Misery...

I don't think they give their GPS location but just the name of their state.

Zenobia
2023-09-06, 06:34
That would explain it. I was always baffled by that one. :)
I remember one time I was a passenger with someone driving somewhere up towards a valley. We got into a place and didn't seem to be making any headway and I finally realized we had been making turns and going around in a circle...or more accurately in a sort of rectangle when I recognized the same houses and landmarks. We felt dumb, laughed it off, then were on our way. Then a few years later my husband was in there with someone who had GPS. Believe it or not, the GPS sent the driver around the exact same circle/rectangle that I'd been in before. I realized it from the description.:laugh:

I'm surprised it isn't in our national anthem lyrics somewhere.:laugh:

I thought it was eh?

I think I remember hearing "eh" in the Bob and Doug Mckenzie skits on SCTV. I don't think saying eh originated with them, though.

We've had something over the years but, just can't remember right now.
Here in the south where I live we say
Hey Y'all

Zenobia

One of my acquaintances used to say "Heeeeeeyyyyyyyy" whenever I saw her. I always used to chuckle.

Reminds me of
y'all take your coat off and stay a while.

Zenobia

That reminds me of when guests used to come over to my relatives house I always used to hear "Come in, come in! No, no don't take your shoes off." It used to confuse me, because you'd think taking your shoes off would be more comfortable.

We had to because Momma didn't want a dirty floor.

Y'all eat more we have a plenty.

I used to hear "Pull up a chair." if anyone came during mealtime at my grandparents, and a plate full would materialize despite any protests. Sometimes I think they'd already eaten, and were politely forced to eat again.

We got dessert, y'all save room.

Zenobia

My great aunt sometimes used to bring trifle for dessert. It was delicious!
Though it is possible it just seemed really delicious because my other relatives always said she added a large amount of rum to it.

It's possible, my mother would soak her fruit cake in rum......always made my nose burn.

Zenobia

I don't think anyone ever made a fruit cake in my family. As I recall, it was always boughten and never eaten. It would just sit there.

I would eat a little bit of it if it had plenty pecans in it.

Zenobia

Pecans are yummy. And walnuts.

Juliet

Oh yeah, nothing beats a southern made pecan pie.

Here we have Black walnut trees that we've been told are worth quite a bit of money.

This is the first time I ever learned black walnut trees exist. I'd never heard of them before. From what I see on google, very pretty! And I also see the wood is indeed worth a lot. Learn something new everyday. :)

My nephew started picking some up (walnuts) that had very recently fell from the trees, looked down and saw his hands had changed color.......
Evidently, the hulls can also be used to create stain?, took a few days to get that off or rather had to wear off.

I saw that when I googled. There was a picture of a woman with stained hands from the walnuts. It looked like it would take some effort to get off her hands. I also saw some black walnut floor pictures and the floor was gorgeous. :) It's cool you kept your black walnut trees, I bet they're so pretty.

Extinction event.

Myself, I think the walnut trees grow way to tall and can be dangerous. We live in an area prone to tornadoes so you really don't want these massive trees close at all to your house.

Zenobia

Yes, that would be scary during a tornado. Pretty trees are great, but not when they're crashing through your roof.

I'm not sure why that popped into my head, I never watched Ice Age. I actually had to look it up to see what I meant! :lip: :laugh:
