View Full Version : Virtumonde and ?others?...

My computer had several problems found when I ran S&D, but the one that keeps coming back is Virtumonde. I followed the following steps and after running S&D in Safe Mode, it said it fixed everything (after running 2nd time).

I have a regularly-updated Norton Antivirus running on the machine.

From the "before requesting assistance post", I followed all the steps...
1. Kaspersky online scanner (see log below)
2. Rebooted into Safe Mode
3. Ran S&D, fixed Virtumonde, reran S&D and found no problems.
4. Ran HijackThis (see log below)

Briefly after running the HJT, I got a message from Norton that said Trojan.Vundo was found and I let Norton try to fix it, but apparently it was not able to - it kept just saying "pending..."

Thank you very much. This is my mother's computer and I've been working on it off and on since yesterday. A friend's daughter came over and used her computer for a while and caused these problems.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< she is running a BADLY outdated version of Java, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
(this is likely why she is infected)

1) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

2) Tutorial if needed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

First we removed and then installed the latest version of Java SE JRE as described.

We the ran Vundofix and Combofix exactly as described. Vundofix we had to reboot and run a 2nd time but it appeared to delete the last one successfully the 2nd try.

Thanks! Here are the logs...

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above
the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens,
copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window.
Then click Remove Vundo.

(Files to add)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pjpvnahu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mmpuypmw.ini

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pjpvnahu.dll <<< make sure this file is gone

C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe.tmp <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner >>> tutorial if needed
http://www.nutnworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1925
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and some feedback. How is the computer running now?

Thanks

I followed all the steps above, including removing the Viewpoint, which as you speculated, was not something we wanted on there. Thanks.

We followed all the steps you defined and the computer appears to be running fine at the moment.

The only thing I noticed that was slightly different from your instructions was...
C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe.tmp was not there to delete, but maybe you just wanted me to be sure it was gone??

Below is the Vundo log and I will post the HJT log next.

THANK YOU so much for your help thus far and let us know what you think we may need to try next if anything is needed.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you said:

C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe.tmp was not there to delete, but maybe you just wanted me to be sure it was gone??Probably remove by combofix, the bad file showed here:
"Files Created from 2008-01-24 to 2008-02-24" and I could not see where it was removed. You are right, I should have said to check for it.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 6:43:28 PM, on 2/23/2008

I do not know what this is: C:\Documents and Settings\Sue McMurphy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\M72NY4K1\FogCreekCopilotHost[1].exe
I thought it would be deleted when you ran ATF-Cleaner. If you do not know why it is there, we need to investigate.

We also have some files Kaspersky says are questionable we need to check. Make sure files and folders are all still visable and use these free scans (one or more until you are satisfied) to find out.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

This is the item showing the questionable files, do you know if it was downloaded on purpose?
RealVNC: http://www.realvnc.com/

Here are the files to check in red:
C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\vncconfig.exe
C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\vncviewer.exe
C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\winvnc4.exe
C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\wm_hooks.dll

You also want to check this one if you are not sure it is valid:
C:\Documents and Settings\Sue McMurphy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\M72NY4K1\FogCreekCopilotHost[1].exe

If any of those scan as bad, I suggest you delete them, once that is done we have infected System Restore files to clean but first the Recovery Console issue.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.

Thanks...Phil

RealVNC I installed quite a while back to remotely help her manage her PC. I trust it, but will immediately update it. It is ver 4.0 and I see a ver 4.3 is out now. The FogCreekCoPilot is a tool that I'm currently using to remotely manage the machine. It is was intentionally installed and I use it to connect to her machine to run the scans, etc. I'm not actually sitting at her PC. Some tasks have required me to step her through them over the phone (running in safe mode, etc) when I could not be connected remotely. I should have explained this before - sorry. Hope it didn't cause too much distraction.

Kaspersky appears to still be identifying quite a few items. Thank you so much for your help.

I will look into the Recovery Console and probably install it and reply back in the morning.

Thank You!
Lyndal.

RealVNC I installed quite a while back to remotely help her manage her PC. I trust it, but will immediately update it.
Even if you trust the program, I suggest you scan the files to be positive they are not infected.

If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup. There was no request for a Kaspersky scan? We need to get past the RC instructions. If combofix is needed to install RC, I do not want to remove it until you have done so. As I explained, the installation is optional (can be important in the future as is also explained in the instructions I posted)
Once we are past that point one way or another, then the tools we unsed will be removed and the last Kaspersky Scan run.

Thanks

Lyndal

Sorry for the late reply - my mother was out of town and I didn't have access to the PC.

I installed RC as the page instructed and it appeared to be successful.

I misunderstood your earlier post asking me to scan those specific files and that's why I ran the Kaspersky scan again. Sorry about that. I have now scanned those files again that you mentioned and they are clean.

Thank you and let me know what else I can do. She has used the PC some since my last post and she said it appears to be operating normally and performing well.

Lyndal.

This was returned by the RC install - wasn't sure if you needed it....

3) C:\QooBox\Quarantine\ <<< delete that folder

4) C:\VundoFix Backups\ <<< delete that folder

5) Empty the Recycle Bin on your Desktop

6) Restart the computer

7) Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You can scan at that point with Kaspersky and it should only find the RealVNC files which you can ignore
