View Full Version : Problem with winlogon.exe (among other things), eating up serious CPU, creating A LOT

Hi!

Saw you guys do an amazing job of helping people, so I was hoping you could give me a hand.

The problem started when I decided to upgrade Microsoft Windows and Office. After doing so on the official Microsoft site, my IE 7.0 went berserk (kept getting pop-ups every 10 seconds, ...). I now use Opera.
Then, a couple of days later, I begin to get I constant warning prompt from NOD32, saying I have problems with a file called ddcywuu.dll and no matter what I decided to do, it kept coming back.
Ran Task Manager, found that winlogon.exe keeps running between 25-75% of my CPU capacity. Tried to fix the problem with a virus scan, ran ad-aware, ... no effect.
The prompts keep telling me that I have to erase ddcywuu.dll, that it (anti-virus, ...) cannot do so right now because the file is in use, that I have to restart the system - but there is no effect.

Since I my description is hardly adequate, I downloaded Hijackthis an performed a scan. Here are the results, I hope you can help.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You have a Vundo infection and there is probably class-action going on with it, if you want more information, let me know. That infection is tough enough to remove and it is not your major issue, this is:

I believe you need this information:
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

Wow!!

I have no idea what to do right now. I'd like to get my computer goint at least to the point that I can finish a project I'm working on, and then do the clean sweep of my computer, but that'll leave my completely vulnerable.

Well, I guess the only thing I can do is a complete format and then work from there.

Thanks a lot for the help, you've been great.

I understand your decision and would have to do the same if it was one of my computers which I use extensively for online activities. Here is information if it helps:

and some information to help you in the future to avoid these situations.

Some good information for you:
