ToshibaTech
2008-02-23, 22:36
Hello Team Spybot helper: I have Spybot S&D 1.5.2, which is showing several Virtumonde and Virtumonde.Dll , registry keys and file (respectively). If I "fix" Virtumonde.Dll upon restarting windows, and error appears stating that an error occurred and C:\WINDOWS\system32\kcuisays.dll (which is where Virtumonde.Dll is) cannot be found. So I recovered all registry keys and the file and don't know what to do!
I followed "Before you post Read this Procedure" as best I could. I did do the hijackthis.log before the Kaspersky Scan, don't know if that matters. I also did not run Spybot in Safe Mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

OK I downloaded VundoFix V6.7.9 from Atribune and will post the log. One concern: The first and third file in the log under "Listing files found while scanning..." Computer had to be rebooted to remove them. Now, everytime I reboot, a RUNDLL dialog box pops up on the desktop stating: "Error loading xxx" (where xxx is the file) and "The specified module could not be found."
What do you recommend I do to correct this? As promised here are the new logs from VundoFix and HJT.

VundoFix log:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's do this now:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your proection back on when you finish.

4) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above
the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens,
copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window.
Then click Remove Vundo.

(files to add)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\admopwrg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwdmperi.dll

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

pskelley: You TRULY are a Security Expert! Thank you for the FAST reply and very easy step by step instructions. I could definitely not do this without your top-notch assistance.
After Steps 1-7, no problem, thanks to your effective, clear, concise instructions. After Steps 1-7, I opened up windows IE V7.0 and did some browsing, no pop-ups or any anomalies. I logged into a https:// site no problem, also no problems, pop-ups, or redirections. Also no problems with
Mozilla V2.0
I now no longer get a RUNDLL dialog box on reboot. I typed the two following files into windows explorer and neither could be found, so success. I also navigated to the folder and looked in \system32\ in addition to utilizing the search item and neither could be found.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\admopwrg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwdmperi.dll

After a few shutdowns and restarts just be be sure, I ran VundoFix V6.7.9 again, it said no infected files found. I can't find the report, believe it or not, if I search for C:\Vundofix.txt the one I already posted comes up. Sorry, I'm sure this is simple for you, but it stumped me.

Here is the latest HJT log:

ALSO, Thanks for the ATF Cleaner. That cleared up 127.8 MB. In step 1, the settings you instructed me to set under Folder Options, I already had set as my folder options. Should I reverse them, or keep them as is?

LASTLY, I ran Spybot S&D, but before the VundoFix and HJT log, and Virtumonde came up in three registries. (NOTE: I have not updated Spybot S&D since 02/22/08, which is when the infected files were found. Should I check for any updates, or wait?) I can post the files if you want, I'm not sure, if it's against the rules. BUT, I clicked "Fixed Selected Problems" and they are now in backup, under the Recovery Icon. After a few more reboots and scans, Spybot S&D has not detected them again. Should I delete the backup?

OK, pskelley, (aka awesome security expert), thank you again. If you take a while to reply, that's no problem. I know this post is on the long side, plus I have some questions, so I don't mind waiting for a reply.

Until my next step, take care.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. The new HJT log appear clean of malware:bigthumb: It is possible Spybot is picking up old dead registry entries that it would remove if it were up to date and totally immunized. Do you have the newest version also:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd15/index.html

Remove Vundofix and the C:\VundofixBackups\ folder and run a new Kaspersky online scan, to make sure nothing hides, using these setting.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here. <<< I do not need to see a clean scan results.

Thanks...Phil

I have updated all my anti-virus & Spyware programs, I am currently running Spybot S&D 1.5.2 I ran them all, nothing malicious was discovered. The KOS found one virus and two infected objects. I just have the window minimized, displaying on my task bar. Let me know if any further action is needed.

Thanks for the scan results and the feedback, those are two infected System Restore files:

pskelley: I wanted to make sure I formally thanked you for your assistance. I could not have removed all those viruses, malware, spware, and adware without your step by step help. You are an asset to the Safer Networking Forums!!

I wanted to know if I should remove HJT, VundoFix, and KOS from my computer or just leave them installed? I have 1GB RAM, 100GB Memory & 3.33 Ghz Pentium IV Processor. Of that, I have 10.8GB used and 82.2GB Free.
I also wanted to ask before I deleted the VundoFix Backups Folder...is it ok to delete contents? It appears as if the infected files are in there, so I wanted to ask before I went messing around with them.

Thanks again,
Take Care.

Remove Vundofix and the C:\VundofixBackups\ folder and run a new Kaspersky online scan, to make sure nothing hides, using these setting.

I suggest you keep HJT, some infections block its installation and it uses no resources, just a little disk space. The tool does a lot more than create a HJT log also:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

Kaspersky Online Scan is optional, you can remove it but I suggest you use one or two online scans as a double check for your resident antivirus program.

Hope that helps
