Hi this is my first time here. Bare with me, I know enough about computers to be dangerous. I have the same issue with Pipas.A as the rest of the posts on this issue. Spybot was running slow, it took all night, and found a few items including Pipas.A. I hit fix. Ran it again. Another day and Pipas.A shows up again. I ran my computer in safe mode and scanned with Ad-aware, Norton Systemworks 06, and Spybot. Spybot ran fast as it used to, but still came up with Pipas.A. Norton found nothing, and I had 2 on Ad-aware. Fixed all, went back to normal start up, ran Spybot again. It ran fast but still found it again. I have read for hours about Pipas.A and finally decided not to waste more time on it. I need your help. This is my work computer.

Let's get rid of the hackers first, then we will see if you have more to clean. Before I start, you can check one item for me and give me the information along with the next logs, here is that item:

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\agent.exe <<< follow the pathway to that item (agent.exe) and enter the whole pathway in one or more of these free online scanners and they will return information. I am fairly sure this is bad, just want to double check. Post that information in this same thread.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.


You may have to use this information to return things to normal:

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Now post the two logs bolded above and we will see what is left to do.

Hi pskelley,

Thank you so much. I'm answering you from home as the troubled computer won't let me get on the internet now. I'm hoping it was just my DSL that was out yesterday afternoon. It worked fine in the am.

A little more info. on my system. I have two HP pavilion computers networked together at work. Mine died last Friday and would not boot to windows at all. It said it was missing <windows root>\system32\hal.dll or something like that, I don't have that info. in front of me right now. I tried system recovery, nothing. Tried safe boot, it wouldn't do it. I tried booting from the Windows XP disc. and copying the hal.dll file back, it said there was no disk in the drive, or any other I tried. When I try to boot normally it just goes into a loop. It gets part of the way, shuts down, starts, shuts down, etc.

After more research I found I might be able to slave it onto the other computer and copy and paste the hal.dll file. As you know that computer has Pipas.A. I don't know if that is preventing it from working but, long story short, I have both hard drives plugged in to one computer and both need serious attention.

I will go back to my office this afternoon and try everything you have listed. Again, thank you so much for your help. I will definitely be donating to Spybot Search & Destroy!

Hi, just to make you aware, long ago I did troubleshooting but for years now I have concentrated on removing malware. I may remember enough to give you a little help or at least to point you in the right direction.

Here is some information about your missing file (I think) hal.dll: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-26,GGLD:en&q=hal%2Edll Please note that Google does not like "something like that's" and error message or files names must be accurate and complete, with the pathway.

Let me say now that this is a severe hijacking by "pros" at doing it. This is how the pay rent and eat in the old Soviet Union. There is a very good chance all will clear up once this infection we call "Wareout" is removed.

If you have a missing or corrupt file that is unrelated to the hijacking, I would suggest you have your Windows CD handy in case you need it and run System Files Checker:

Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Hi Phil,

I ran C:\PROGRAM FILES...through all 3 scanners you suggested. All came up clean with no virus found.

I moved HJT to the location you suggested.

I do not have the option available that you suggested for obtaining a DNS server automatically. I think I found it by going into the control panel, clicking on Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings>checking box marked "Automatically Detect Settings," and hitting OK>OK. Let me know if that's not correct.

Finally, I ran sfc /scannow. It just finished. I will post this, shut down, restart, run Spybot, Ad-aware, and Norton. I'll disconnect my other hard drive and put it back in my other tower and power it up to see if it will boot now. Let's hope all is well. I'll let you know in a while.

OK, a little more work to do, since this way a rather nasty infection, I would like to run another tool to make sure nothing is hiding from us. Please do this:

1) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

2) TeaTimer is a good program but it will block our HJT fix we must make. Use these instructions and turn TeaTimer off until you are finished with HJT: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results, a new HJT log and your feedback.

Your Java program is out of date and that is a security issue. Update like this: Start > Control Panel > Java Console > Update. If no one is going to do this manually I suggest you set it to auto for safety.

Good morning Phil,

I had to finally give up last night. After my last post I tried to restart and the computer went into a boot loop just like the other computer is doing. The only difference was I was able to start it in safe mode, unlike the other. I ran Spybot, Ad-aware, and Norton. All came up clean.

New problem. Now I can't get on the internet. Maybe I should not have changed the setting in Internet Options? Or maybe something is hiding like you said. Any ideas on how to get it to boot normally and get the internet to work so I can run the ewido scan?

For all others out there reading this, I know how it started. It's totally my fault. I let my Norton System Works expire and was too cheap to renew it. Not more than a day went by and all this happened. Don't make the same mistake! Always update your anti-virus software and keep it active!

Phil, I'm sending Spybot Search & Destroy a donation now, you guys are fantastic!

Hello and what setting did you change in internet options? Can you post a new HJT log so I can take a look for any recent changes. Here are some options:

1) Call your ISP, they should be able to troubleshoot the connection and get you back online.

2) Open Internet Options in Internet Explorer then the Connections Tab. Since you are on DSL you should have "Never dial a connection" chosen, your provider will be able to check the settings for up or return you to the proper ones. Make sure you let them know about the Ukranian hijacker.

3) As a last tool, if there is a Winsock issue caused by the hijackers, running this tool should fix it:

I reset my modem and router and they show an open connection, it should be working.

Never dial a connection is checked.

Can't do your suggestion #3 due to no internet connection.

Extremely frustrated at this point, been at it for over a week now!
I'll go back to work now and see if I can troubleshoot the internet connection. I have copied all of your posts here at home and I'll take them with me and hopefully today will be the day for success!

I am not sure about the above, I would ask the ISP for help, You should be able to phone them and they will guide you through. The options I can think of if you are using a DSL modem, would be to power down everything including the computer. Power back up all of the other equipment first, like router, modem and wait to make sure all normal lights are as they should be. Then power up the computer and it should identify the needed settings.
This is at the way I do it with Version DSL and my Westell Modem, and Linksys router.

Hi Phil,

I called my DSL provider and we worked together to try to get the internet up. He said my DSL line was working correctly but it would not connect while my computer is in safe mode. It still will only boot that way. I tried using my Windows XP CD to boot with no luck. I tried to restart and boot normally several times, wishful thinking! It just goes into the reboot loop again. He said he thinks I need to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows XP. I really don't want to do that since it is my work computer with many important files.

I think I will have to bite the bullet and take it to an IT expert. What do you think?

Phil - I can't wait to go to the office tomorrow to try that. I'm sure it will break the loop and I will be able to continue with the rest of the fixes you posted previously. I love how they refer to the "Blue screen of death!" Totally true. Back tomorrow.

Well, I tried the links you suggested for stopping the continuous reboot loop. The first one stopped the loop, but the computer just stops loading windows and gives me the "Blue screen of death." These are the stop errors it lists: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF74A7174, 0xF7C85D44, 0xF7C85A40). I'm still trying to find out what they mean and if I can fix them. Any further help would be appreciated.

Google is a great tool. If you enter the error message into Google exactly as it appears, chances are you will get the information you need. This stuff you posted is not complete and/or random. Please copy and paste ALL of the information for me and I will see what I can find out. For instance, when I Google your words "Blue screen of death" Google returns 21,900,000 websites with possible answers.
