View Full Version : Massive PopUps and other spyware infection

Darkfox
2006-02-17, 19:29
I'm trying to clean up a friend's computer. The first noticeable problem is a massive amount of popups. But, I think there is a ton of other spyware infections as well. I ran Spybot several times and removed a ton of things (some only went away in safe mode), but there are 4 things that keep returning:

Windows AdTools
Windows Security Center.AntivirusDisableNotify
Windows Security Center.AntivirusOverride
Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify

The HijackThis log is as follows. Thanks in advance for any help!

After a reboot

Smithfraud-C
Web-Nexus
Command Service
Network Mointor

also reappear in Spybot.

I re-ran HTJ prior to re-cleaning those problems, in case there are any changes to the above log.

I am running Spybot Version 1.4. I updated it as soon as it downloaded, but I may have gotten a "checksum" error and it didn't go through. I just updated it and am running it again. Will post results.

I could not find the msoevc.exe file under C:\Windows. I did a search on the C:\ drive, but it did not come up there, either.

The other file is attached here:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1178.0

check.bat results =

quicklinks did not exist in add/remove.

But, I must have half assed making system files visible. I found the msoevc.exe file, and will attach it to the other thread shortly.

Note: Your antivirus script protection might interfear, its safe, please allow it to run.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES

Restart your pc and use it online for a few hours, We need to target all of its files at one time, in the meantime dont be troubleshooting and dont let your antivirus or antispyware fix anything (temporaraly)

Then run findqologic and post another report please

Click the all files button > Click the red highlighted X button and say yes to the prompt to restart the pc.

After that restart

Launch Notepad (not wordpad), and copy and paste the Bolded below into a new text file.
Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\mqsgsttq]

Looks like we got that one, It has a habit of returing so keep an eye out for this O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync], if it returns let us know.

Do any files show when you run Look2Me-Destroyer ? , if so post its log

Installing Ewido would be a good idea
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Its a trial but you can still update and scan and clean with the program when it ends

Darkfox
2006-02-21, 21:22
Okay, will watch for Qoologic to return, thanks.

Look2Me-Destroyer is clean.

Ewido --
17 adware related registry entries deleted
The 6 Qoologic files in a c:\!killbox folder ?
A billion tracking cookies and some viral related files in the temp internet files directory. 295 items in total.

All that before I gave up reviewing each item. :p Do you need me to report the scan log?

LonnyRJones
2006-02-21, 21:26
"Do you need me to report the scan log?"

Only if bad files keep returning

"Look2Me-Destroyer is clean." Great :)

Does this mean we're clean???

Thank you so much for your help!

Everything seems fine in all scans today. It looks as if we killed everything.

There is still one peculiar problem that I'm having. Throughout all the trouble that we were fixing, I noticed that Norton Auto Protect was disabled and would not enable. When we finished, I unstalled that program and installed a newer version of our corporate version. Auto Protect will still not enable. I engaged Tamper Protect and when I rebooted the last time it showed the process being shut down and seemed to indicate that it was a file "ACS.exe" that did it. In an google search, it indicates that the file is related to WIFI (this is a laptop with built in wifi). There is one hit that indicates the file is related to a worm that shuts down AV programs. The files is in the wrong location (windows/system32) for where it should be if it were the virus and no scans indicate the file is viral (trend micro online scan, norton scan). But, I can not seem to get the auto protect to stay enabled.

Any suggestions? A fresh HJT log:

Hi Lonnie,

I just ran the tool and it shows the computer as being clean from that virus.

Here is the message I am getting from Norton:

SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT

Target: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
Event Info: Open Process
Action Taken: Blocked
Actor Process: C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\Loader\aolload.exe (PID 3808)
Time: Monday, February 27, 2006 8:49:51 AM

This morning there were 36 of them, the "sndsrvc.exe" changes to different Norton associated files. On friday, the "aolload.exe" was the ACD.exe file.

Both ACD.exe and aollload.exe come up clear when I scan them directly.

Do you use a Atheros Wireless LAN adapter ?

Sounds like norton is confused and possibly corrupted
while disconnected uninstall it reboot install again, if you have a choice go with another program, avg, antivi or avast all have free version's..

Yes, there is an Atheros Wireless Lan adapter installed in Device Manager. So, that process is valid. You must be right about Norton being corrupt. I uninstalled Norton and gave put on AVG. Everything looks good at this point, no re-occurrances of the other stuff. Thank you for all your help! I'm going to return the laptop to my friend. Hopefully I won't be back needing help for this machine for a looooong time!

Good , have them participate a bit by reading this article if possible
To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"
