View Full Version : Vundo after-math

Hi guys,

I recently had a Vundo infection on my pc and I think it has been cured since combofix isnt showing any files to delete, and I ran multiple full system scans using different anti viruses and they arent showing any viruses.

The problem is that my pc is concurrently sending spam (an email every second). I am not using outlook or any pop3 account on any other mail program, so am not quite sure how are these emails being sent.

I blocked smtp protocol using nortons firewall, which is the only way I could find to stop these emails !

Am I having trojans/viruses other than Vundo ? As far as I know Vundo doesnt cause a problem like this

Please help me resolve this issue. Thanks

Hi

"I have installed/ininstalled multiple antivirus programs trying to fix the problem since the last couple of days."

Installing multiple antiviruses causes also system slowdown.

Same with firewalls.

Let's find out first what is installed:

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

The system32/services.exe file I have is trying to connect to these ip addreses 81.22.61.158 and 208.72.169.54 constantly, and spam mail is being sent out from my PC as I previously mentioned.

One other problem is that the trojan is trying to relove different domains like : ILOVEEVERYBODY.TJ

I dont know what is the file causing this to happen nor do I know how. Its injecting code into services.exe and I dont know what other modifications its causing on my pc

I am trying now to control this using firewalls after I found out the IP's using packet capture tools

I ran a threatexpert scan on my pc this is its findings :

* Scan details:
o Scan started: Monday, March 03, 2008 19:55:24
o Scan time: 03 minutes, 27 seconds
o Number of memory objects scanned: 6842
+ processes: 37
+ modules: 1727
+ heap pages: 5078
o Number of suspicious memory objects detected: 0
o Number of malicious memory objects detected: 2
o Overall Risk Level: High

What's been found :

Contains characteristics a SPAM bot, backdoor trojan, and a rootkit. The backdoor component allows the remote hacker to download/install additional components and instruct the bot to launch massive SPAM attacks from the compromised system.

Detected locations:

* Process "services.exe", heap page: [0x00cf0000 - 0x00cfb000]

* Process "services.exe", heap page: [0x00d10000 - 0x00d28000]

Capability to send out email message(s) with the built-in SMTP client engine.

Process "services.exe", heap page: [0x00d10000 - 0x00d28000]

Hi

You have Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 installed so I recommend to uninstall Sygate Personal Firewall.

You have also traces of Norton, so please see here (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=bar_sch_nam&docid=2004092711224136&nsf=nip.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=ag)

After that:

* Download GMER from
here (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip):
Unzip it and start GMER.exe
Click the rootkit-tab and click scan.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Thanks for helping me out Shaba

The nortons ftp site is not working for a reason. I tried downloading the tool but failed to do so

here is the last part of the GMER log .. it notified me of rootkit changes on my pc the first few seconds then ran a full scan. It stoped immediately after this log area posted telling me again that this is caused by a rootkit, which I beleive are the files/registery values causing the problem :

Hi

"
The nortons ftp site is not working for a reason. I tried downloading the tool but failed to do so"

Ok, we'll handle that later.

I still recommend to uninstall Sygate as KIS has a very good (actually better than Sygate) firewall.

Yes, we have the most common spambot here, rustock, which is also a rootkit.

Run gmer.exe
Click the tab called Processes and click the Safe... button. The computer will reboot and the Gmer screen will open.

Click Files... and browse to the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system\pcximg.pif

Now click Delete

Now click the Services tab. Click the entries in red one by one with your right mouse button and click Delete... Answer Yes to all the warning windows.
When you've removed all the Service entries in red, reboot your computer.

Re-run gmer.

Hey Shaba,

I deleted the file using GMER in safemode and under services tab as you directed and it was just one file marked in red "pcximg.pif". It didnt prompt me to delete any of the registry values found earlier. I did another GMER scan and its clean.

As for the firewalls, I will manage to do the uninstall as soon as I finish copying the rules to place them on the other.

Attached is the new GMER log, and this is the fresh HJT log:

Hi

Looks pretty good :)

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only!

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
