Hi there, just a brief background before I post the logs. Earlier today I saw something trying to install, I stopped it imediately and my PC-Cillin 2008 firewall blocked requests to run BUT it seems a large number of files were already on my machine. I've removed a lot of them after running the PC-Cillin virus scan but there are some DLL files I just can't get rid of. Currently PC-Cillin is constantly generating an alert (more than one per second) regarding a file called "mljhhfe.dll" which is in the System32 folder.
I also ran SpyBot, and VundoFix.exe, and disabled rogue startup entries using TuneUp Utilities 2006.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

F:\Downloads\Applications\HijackThis\HiJackThis.exe
Not a safe location for HJT, please follow these directions:

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Can you tell me what you are doing here?
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /C move /Y "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetub.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetup.dll" (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')

"mljhhfe.dll" which is in the System32 folder.
I also ran SpyBot, and VundoFix.exe, and disabled rogue startup entries using TuneUp Utilities 2006.
Sound like you ran into an exploit which was trying to install the Vundo infection, see this:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/11/07/rogue_antispyware_ads/

When you ran Vundofix, did it locate and remove the files in System32? Do you still have the .txt from the Vundofix run, if so, post it so I can have a look.

All I really see is some adware which we will remove once HJT is properly placed.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Saturday, March 01, 2008 10:58:03 PM

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007\Quarantine\ <<< delete the contents of the TM quarantine folder.

Recap: Post the Vundofix report if you have it, a new HJT log reflecting a properly positioned HJT and any information I reqested. Please add any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Hi there,

Many thanks for your response. Just to confirm, I have read the "Before you post" post and thanks for the welcome to the forums!

The day following my below post and HJT log, it appeared the virus had multiplied as there were more random dll files in my system32 folder and the PC-Cillin Virus scan found more files. I've managed to clear most again using a combination of PC-Cillin, Ad Aware 2007, SpyBot and the VundoFix program. PC-Cillin still picks up 2 files when I perform a virus scan:

1) DETECTED AS : "Cryp_Tap-2" -this is located: ..\System32\pmnno.dll

I also checked in TuneUp2006 to see what programs have this file open and noted the following:

Microsoft Local Security Authority Sybsystem Service (LSASS) (lsass.exe)
Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe)
Firefox also appears to have this file open?

2) DETECTED AS : "TROJ_VUNDO.ART" -this is located: ..\System32\tlosonfe.dll

TuneUp2006 indicated it was being opened by any program running at the time of the check including notepad, all my AV Software, My mouse Driver, Firefox...??

This also seems to create a Start-up entry: Rundll32.exe "C:WINDOWS\system32\tlosonfe.dll",s -> I can't dissable this.

Here is my latest HJT log:

I'm not sure what that registry key entry you highlighted is, I don't recall creating anything manually - is this how it appears?

There are a few other files in my System32 folder that were created after I noticed the infection, not sure if this helps:

* rwwnw64d.exe
* nptoncdq.ini
* dubuanro.ini
* onnmp.ini2
* onnmp.ini

Thanks,
Graham.

OK Graham, before we drag out additional tools, let's give this a try. If we don't kill it all, the junk will morph and return, it is important that the directions are followed exactly and executed in the order posted.

1) You are running System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) in Selective Startup Mode. Return it to Normal Mode until we finish this cleanup. Sorry...I missed that in the first log.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens,
copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

(file to add)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tlosonfe.dll

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html

O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /C move /Y "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetub.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetup.dll" (User 'Default user')

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tlosonfe.dll <<< make sure that file is gone

You may also delete these files:

* rwwnw64d.exe
* nptoncdq.ini
* dubuanro.ini
* onnmp.ini2
* onnmp.ini

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

Hi,

I followed the instructions below, here is my breakdown of what occured.

When I ran Vundofix it couldn't initially delete the file 'tlosonfe.dll', so it had me re-boot and then I attempted to remove it again, this appears to have been successful.

Then on the following re-boot I got an error stating the '..\system32\tlosonfe.dll' file was missing. Running HJT and removing the entries you suggested stopped this error (I presume because the registry entry was removed)

I then followed the steps to the end, deleting the files from System32. Upon the next re-boot, onnmp.ini and onnmp.ini2 returned and the "pmnno.dll" still exists and can't be deleted (A PC-Cillin scan still detects this as a virus) Does this file require removal too? It seems we're close to having a clean system though... Here are the logs:

One final thing, it appears my C: Drive icon in My Computer has changed into a red X (Formally it was the HardDisc Icon)

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. You said this:

One final thing, it appears my C: Drive icon in My Computer has changed into a red X (Formally it was the HardDisc Icon)
Let's continue and make sure no malware is left. If that issue still exists, let me know before we finish.

Let's try Vundofix once like this:
Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens,
copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

(file to add)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\onnmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\onnmp.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmnno.dll

Post the Vundofix report so I can see if that kills them.

Run a new Kaspersky scan, It will show the Vundofix Backups, let's make sure nothing else is hiding. Please use these settings.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks a lot for your help this evening. I'm afraid I'll have to stop now as it's 12:30am here in the UK and I have work in the morning!!

In the time between my last post and now, 2 new .dll files appeared. I have had chance to run VundoFix on all 3 and they are now not present in the Sytem32 folder. I ran a quick PC-Cillin scan on the Windows folder and nothing was detected.

I will run the Kaspersky scan tomorrow since it takes a while to complete and post the results up.

Again, many thanks for your valuable advice.

I'm not getting any more alerts and don't see any rogue files so...does this mean I'm clean?!

Thanks,

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. It looks like the memory in TeaTimer is returning junk to the HJT log. They are not malware, just debris, let's clean it with a batch file like this.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes.

* Restart your computer.

2) In some cases it's sometimes quite usefull to reset TeaTimer, once you've had it disabled to remove HijackThis entries :
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Restart and post a new HJT log.

Thanks, I followed your instructions (though TeaTimer was already disabled i.e. un-ticked). I got a BSOD upon the first reboot after running HJT but it was fine on the second attempt. Here's the new log:

I have noticed a problem with some websites in FireFox - they don't display properly i.e. Youtube, Facebook - bits are missing. I think these are java based, is it possible something has been switched off? IE7 appears to be fine... Thanks so much for you help once again!

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljhhfe - C:\WINDOWS\ <<< did you miss this one? It's a dead line but it should have been removed with no problems after the batch file cleaned TT memory.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\ <<< I believe Java needs one update, make sure all old versions are uninstalled.

This was a nasty infection, it is hard to tell what problems it may have caused the browser. I use Firefox as a spare and when I have issues, I uninstall and reinstall it.

I missed that last entry in HJT, have removed now and will also update Java and remove old versions. It must have been a cache thing with FireFox, I SHIFT+REFRESHED and it resolved the issue.

PSKelly, thanks for your brilliant advice! I shall be donating to SpyBot shortly. I submitted a request for help with Trend Micro, but none of their advice worked - and I'm paying them a subscription!!

I will take a look at the articles above - I always thought I was fairly clued up and well covered, though I think I stopped the Malware in it's tracks before it installed loads so called 'softare' like AVSystemCare, I was surprised how much got there before the firewall / real-time virus scan flagged it. By far the worst infection I've had in 10 years of PC use, I've always been able to resolve the issues myself in the past. This Virtumonde thing is nasty, seems a lot have been caught out.

I will re-enable TeaTimer as I didn't have that previously!

One last thing, I had the Red X as my hard drive icon - I found this registry update on another forum, does this look right to you?

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\c]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\c\DefaultIcon]

Cheers again,
Graham.
