Hello westing

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before YouPost (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Your infected with the Vundo Trojan  Just deleting that file is not the answer because there are many more files associated with this infection that are not showing on your log.

I need you to download and run these programs in the order I have them posted , after you run the last scan, then post a new HJT log.

Do this first.

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Download VundoFix (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 ) to your desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Vundofix is running now, do you want me to post a new HijackThis log along with the vundofix doc before I run malwarebytes? Also, once I disabled teatimer and rebooted I opened Spybot and the teatimer box was checked again?!? Do I need to disable it every time before I reboot?

Westing,

I need you to download and run these programs in the order I have them posted , after you run the last scan, then post a new HJT log.

So now run Malwarbytes and then Combofix and then post a new HJT log. Keep the Teatimer disabled until we are done.

Ken:)

Hello,

Hopefully, I did everything correctly?? You did very well :bigthumb:

A bit more to do. The Vundo infection you have is one of the latest variants, it includes the ability to infect legit programs and files on your system, which it has  If you look on your Combofix report, all the files and folders in the Blue Code Box have been infected with this trojan.

Open Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above Killall::

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

I have installed several things since I've known I was infected. Does this pose a problem?

Hi,

I am not sure what you installed, you did not say.

You need to disable Spyware Guard as it may interfere with the fix.

Double click on the Red SG Icon in your system tray.
Go to Options and remove the Three security checkmarks.
OK your way out of the program

Dont forget to re enable this when we are done fixing your computer

Open Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above RenV::

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

The programs are Spywareguard and Spywareblaster. There maybe others but thats all I can thank of. I'm not sure since I downloaded those while I was infected if the vundo virus would effect them??

Your HJT log looks fine :bigthumb:

Spywareguard and Spywareblaster <-- These are two great programs but they do not remove anything, they help block this stuff from your computer.

Reboot your computer and Drag Combofix to the trash and download a fresh copy as its updated on a regular basis .

This file infecter is a fairly new variant, I am looking into why there still showing up. They may be legit copies of the files and the bad ones may have been removed, I will find out. Be back soon.

My pc-cillin icon that usually shows up in my system tray no longer appears? If I open the main console from my startup menu it comes up but when I exit it still does not show up in my system tray and it will not allow me to check for updates?
My subscription ends March 8, is it worth me purchasing it again or using one of the free anti-virus and firewalls recommended?
Also, I removed windows defender b/c I kept getting a error message when I tried to install updates. This happens when there are windows updates as well. The automatic update will download the updates but I have to manually install each one. Is this a result of the vundo virus and should I be able to re-install windows defender and keep it updated? Sorry for all the questions!!! I really appreciate all of your help and time today! I'm in no rush for the answers just when ever you get the chance. :)

Hello,

pc-cillin is one of the programs that was infected by this trojan, what I would do is completely uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel. I would also uninstall Trojan Hunter as thats not the best of programs,

If you need a free Anti Virus program, here are a few, just install one , more is overkill and will actually do more harm than good.

AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5)
Free Avast 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
Avira AntiVirŪ Personal Edition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions
Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Delete the files in RED

C:\WINDOWS\system32\.htm
C:\WINDOWS\BM2bdc6baa.xml

Download and save RenV (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/RenV.exe) to your desktop

Doubleclick RenV.exe.

When finished, it shall produce a new log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Your log looks fine :bigthumb: The only thing you need to remove is Viewpoint, unless you use it. it usually installs without your knowledge or consent and is not needed for anything, you can uninstall it via the Add Remove programs. Its not malicious but uses system resources and is in the process of crossing the line into Adware.

The Vundo File Infecter that you had adds infected files to some programs, in your case it was the ones in the Code Box so that everytime you boot your PC or run those programs they can reinfect you. But the slimeballs that wrote it just wanted to add a file to them , not replace a legit file or the program wont work and Combofix weeds though them to find the infected ones and keep the legit copies. The bad files were removed after the initial run but a bug in Combofix had them show up again, but there gone now.

Go to C:\Program Files and see if you have a folder for Trojan Hunter.

C:\WINDOWS\BM2bdc6baa.txt <--you can remove this file

How is your system running now?????????????

Removed Viewpoint, did not find a file for Trojan Hunter, removed the C:\WINDOWS\BM2bdc6baa.txt file and my compute is running great!!!!!!!! I can't thank you enough for your help and the time you spent!!! Is there a specific way I can get rid of the stuff I used today or should I keep them, like vundo fix, malwarebytes, combofix and all the logs? Also,
I uninstalled pc-cillin like I said before but I noticed folders I still have. Is there something I can use to get rid of these? Last one, :D: do you happen to know why my windows updates and windows defender updates won't install?

My bad

The program you want to uninstall is Spyhunter I need a bruski :)

Glad things are running better :bigthumb:

The free version of Malwarebytes is yours to keep, you can run it every now and then to keep and eye on things.

You can drag RenV to the trash.

Last one, do you happen to know why my windows updates and windows defender updates won't install? Not sure on this one. I will link you to some windows support sites that are better equipped to help you with that.

You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0.0.12 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn
Ken

Good Morning,

I have been looking over your log and I think the reason for you not being able to update your programs may be related to this InstallShield Update Service This was one of the programs that the File Infecter played with. As a precaution we removed it from starting up with HJT and we can restore it.

To restore the backups:
Open HiJackThis
Click on "View the list of Backups"
Place a check mark next to anything you want to restore
Click Restore
Click Yes
Reboot your computer

Look for these two entries.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

If that did not help than when you post on a windows support forum let them know you had a bad Vundo infection and it messed up that program, they will be able to help you install it properly.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Stay well,
Ken:)

I was on a google forum and found a notepad doc that I saved and ran and was able to get defender udates. So, hopefully that fixed it. I will post what I actually ran when I am home this evening around 6pm est. Also, I removed the older version of J2SE yesterday in between post and download the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 to my documents but have not installed it. I will do that as soon as I can. Thanks, for your continued help!! :)

This is what I did in order for windows to automatically install updates, it worked for windows defender as well:

From: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_thread/thread/20581c2030685bfc

Cut and paste this into notepad:

regsvr32.exe iuengine.dll
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32.exe wuauserv.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuweb.dll
regsvr32.exe wups2.dll
regsvr32.exe cdm.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml2r.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3r.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
regsvr32.exe msxmlr.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml2.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Now click on File
Click on Save As
(dialogue box appears)
At the bottom do the drop down in Save as Type as ALL FILES

In File Name box name it Winupdatefix.bat
Save it to your desktop (for ease of finding it)

it will appear as a ms-dos batch file.
double click
press enter after each confirmation. if it says it is missing a file or
cannot re-register don't worry. Note: initpki.dll will seem to hang, it
just takes less than a minute comapred to the others (that are almost
instant).
-----------------------------------------------

Hopefully, this didn't do any harm to my computer.

In this folder I have Java(TM) 6 update 3. Do I need to remove this before I install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4?

ken545

Lets install Java 6 Update 4 and if it installs with no issues than you can uninstall update 3.

I tried to install the update that I downloaded yesterday and got a error message. I'm downloading it again and if I get another error message I will post it in my next reply.

Okay, I have installed the update using the link you provided. Now, in my Add/Remove folder I have: Java DB 10.3.1.4, Java(TM) 6 update 3, Java(TM) 6 update 4 and Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 update 4.

ken545
2008-03-04, 01:10
6 update 3 <-- You can delete this one, not sure about the other one, its no problem to keep them if you have enough disk space/

Thanks:), I removed 6 update 3. Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 update 4 is 349.00mb. It shows I have 125GB of available free space. I'm assuming this means its okay to keep the above update.
